Being from Guam, it's always funny hearing this story. When I was in elementary school, there was an account from a Chamorro farmer. "We thought the Spaniards were cleaning out the cannons. We didn't even notice the change in government" 😂😂😂
Bruh 😂
I heard something similar when I was there. Nice island by the way, if I had to pick one to retire to that might be it.
I was a youngster there. Loved it. There was one McDonald's and not many other corporate chains except a Hilton and maybe the other couple large hotels, Baskin Robin's on base, and a shoe store in Agana. The Southern part of the island seemed Chamorro other than the large Naval base where ships were. Anderson Airbase was crazy busy and Naval and Marine planes would land at the International Airport. WW2 Japanese shore guns were still there and Japanese armor sitting in the tall razor grass areas. Talafofo Falls was accessible only by a hike and swimming through a large pool at the bottom of the river. So much of what I mentioned has changed since I was there. We still had a lot of birds, and the Filipino brown "rat snake" was just starting to spread and eat the birds which apparently led to birds wiped out and spiders became dominant in the brush. Missed that
You miss spiders? F that!
I thought I read "Churro farmer". I was very excited for a second.
I love how the secretary of the Navy was just casually like "Oh and please pick up Guam while you're out."

Fun fact:The SecNav at the time wasn’t very active in office. He tended to leave matters to his assistant.
But that assistant SecNav was VERY active. He’s the one that told Dewey to go kick ass.
Of course that same Assisstant SecNav couldn’t go kick ass in Guam himself, because he was too busy waiting to kick ass in Cuba, himself.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the OG Jingo, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, soon to be Rough Rider, Teddy Roosevelt!
Knew a guy from Guam in High school, one-liner machine. He told me that Guam was a Navy ship and I was like" Oh it's a small island" he was like no it's a ship. I finally understand!
My Grandfather was born and raised in Guam. At JUST the right time for the Japanese to -ahem- visit. He was 6 years old when the death marches happened. He told me how they got walked around and around the island. Fall down? Stop? Welp. That was it for you. (Being vague for RUclips reasons) He already became an orphan at this point, so he didn't have a lot of motivation to go for a walk. Eventually he just fell, giving up on it. But before the soldiers could do anything, a man picked him up, threw him over his shoulder and walked the rest of the way with him. Afterwards, he was adopted by that man, then he grew up, and joined the US Army as soon as he came of age.
This doesn't really have anything to do with anything. But it's rare I see Guam mentioned, uh, anywhere. And it makes me remember my Grandfather when I do see it mentioned. So yeah. Bit of story time there.
Wow! Your story brought tears to my eyes. The part where your grandfather gave up and was picked up and then later adopted... That guy did the right thing at the perfect time. I am sure he knew then that he was going to end up adopting the boy. What a stand up hero of a man!
Thank you for sharing. All history is connected. Thank you for reminding me of my grandparents. One of my grandfathers taught me to fix tube radios. When I joined the Army I signed up for a different school but that was where they sent me because they were having trouble getting people to graduate with high scores. Easy to get a high score when you already know how to do it lol. Thanks Grandad Robert.
That was a great story. I was in Guam for 12 months total, and it's a beautiful island with phenomenal people. Hafa Adai .
That is an amazing piece of history. Thank you for sharing his story. God bless.
That's a very heartwarming story.

Remember tbis little gem:
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is raising some eyebrows with a comment he made about the U.S. territory of Guam during a House Armed Services Committee hearing last Thursday.
In a discussion regarding a planned military buildup on the Pacific island, Johnson expressed some concerns about the plans to Adm. Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet.
"My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," Johnson said. Willard paused and replied, "We don't anticipate that."
Yes, a U.S. Congressman in complete seriousness expressed concern to the Admiral of The Pacific Fleet during a congressional hearing that too much construction on Guam might cause it to tip over.

You missed that one of the coal bunkers shared a bulkhead with one of the magazines so a coal fire in that bunker (not an uncommon occurrence at that time) could easily have set off that magazine.
So, while watching this one I realized something. We became a country by “messing” with England's boat that had tea on it and now we have a “no touchy” clause on our own boats. I love the irony of us having a “heeeeeyyyyyy. We’ve seen this before, because we did it. NO TOUCHY THE FLOATY FORTRESS!”
Calling them floaty fortress is apt as old wooden war ships had two castles, fore and aft, that could be defended even if boarded.
Honestly I has never thought of that until now. It is kinda like we know what can happen if you mess with the boats, we are smarter than Grandpa.😂

I'm half Chamoru and grew up on Guam. You pretty much nailed that whole story on the head. Capt. Leary was the dude who became the first naval governor of Guam. The typical part was he hated the place, even stayed on the USS Yosemite for 3 months rather than live ashore until the former Spanish governor's palace was repaired for him to live in. Effectively left his subordinate, Lt. Safford, in charge of administering the island from ashore. Thankfully, Safford was rather fond of Guam, even kept a diary of his year-long stay there that has since been published. Anywho, Si Yuus Maase(chamoru for 'thank you').
I spoke to multiple African American coworkers who had NO IDEA who the Harlem Hellfighters were. Could you please make a video explaining who they were and just how badass they were as a unit?

If you think that's an overly easy invasion, you should see that time we accidentally conquered California in 1842. Yes, I said accidentally. Commodore Ap Catsby thought the US had declared war on Mexico (because Mexico was also invading the rebellious Alta California, under General Micheltorena, to put down Alvarado's lone Star republic whose flag predated Texas's), and so he just parked the Pacific fleet in Monterey and they surrendered. Best part was, Micheltorena heard about the American commodore up in Monterey, he fled into the interior and lost his guns in a rainstorm. The US government did pay Mexico for those lost arms, but they're still somewhere in the Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo hinterlands. So not only did we get to absolutely humiliate Mexico, but we got some buried treasure outta the deal. How's that for a hilarious tale?

Completely unrelated to this vid. But I found this and thought of you for making a shirt about it:
"Jiu-jitsu is a martial art known among practitioners as the gentle art of folding clothes while someone is still wearing them."
Great stuff
But I'm telling you man, you NEED to cover "pappy" boyington, he ran a squadron of marine aviators in the pacific and over 13 weeks they shot down a confirmed 97 aircraft. Pappy was shot down and spent 20 months in a Japanese p.o.w. camp.
Really interesting story
If I may make a recommendation; the 24th Infantry Division faced some crazy things during The Pacific campaign. My Great Uncle Walker was a part of the division, and I am in possession of many of his war items, including many citations. Please message me if you want to expand on it, or even just chat. He was a men of men. Fought for 5 days straight without letup and while wounded; also fought in a monsoon where enemies would jump out of pillboxes 3 feet away in waist high grass -- crouched with grenades and swords.
Left cover on many occasions to lay down suppressive machine gun fire. Watched his CO killed in their first engagement -- was the first to die. There's so much he saw that and I want to get he and his companies story out there!
Your uncle is a G dude you should be proud
Guam is underrated.
My Dad (Marine Corps) was stationed there in 48.
I was maybe 2
I remember Dad bringing home lizards to eat the insects and my mom being horrified.
During a typhoon they put me in a closet w a book and a bare light bulb while my parents played cards and drank with neighbors till the MC sent a rescue vehicle.
Have a friend from Guam
Born WAAAAAAY back in 1971, in Agana Heights US Guam.
My buddy told me it was full of trannies. Perhaps the reminents of liberal brainwashing happened there. Or perhaps, people went there from thailand
I got a bunch of friends from there most born on bases
Fun Fact about Emillio Aguinaldo: *_He is the same person to order the execution of two national heroes._*
The First being Andres Bonifacio "Father of The Revolution" and one of the Founding members of the Katipunan (KKK), he was arrested under the orders of Aguinaldo and executed after a trial.
The Second being General Antonio Luna, one of the ONLY MILITARY FIGURES to stump american forces and generals for his tactics, he was later assassinated by soldiers getting shot after being called back, all under orders of Aguinaldo.
30 wounds later, his last words were "Cowards! Assassins"
So not only did Aguinaldo kill two national heroes, *_he fucked up both times in trying to liberate his own country BY SHOOTING HIMSELF IN THE FOOT_*
I love it that your videos probably make more people join the military then the actual US military ads.
To be entirely fair, everywhere has more people than the state of Wyoming. Wyoming even has more animals per square mile than people.
And those of us who have lived/are living in Wyoming love that fact!
I really want to retire in Wyoming and I absolutely positively swear to vote Republican
Note to self: move to Wyoming.
@@a.j.vantassell2785 Wait! If you do that, Wyoming will have more people than it has people!
@@sethb3090 And?

Guam is the only place I know, that you can scuba dive and actually touch a sunk ship from WW1, and WW2 at the same time.
See, that's why Guam was taken back so hard and fast. Because it was effectively a Naval vessel. And like always..."Ya don't fuck with America's Boats."
Unless you’re Israel
Nic's regular protagonists: hold my beer
Today's protagonists: get the beer, Frank!
Teddy Roosevelt made the Tampa hotel his HQ during the Spanish-American war. It's now Tampa University right on the Hillsborough River and across the river from downtown Tampa. So in every parade in Tampa you see some Roughriders are always in the parade, including the Gasparilla festival.
Hank Johnson is still worried that Guam may tip over.
For those who don't understand this hysterical reference... 😂
