- The 2020 Youth and Young Adult Vaping Project was a national-level survey project aimed at better understanding vaping among youth and young adults across Canada. In response to the findings of this study, Nova Scotia became one of the first Canadian provinces to announce comprehensive legislation aimed at reducing the growing problem of vaping in young people.
This legislation saw the introduction of a full flavour ban, a nicotine concentration cap, and increases to taxation. Despite this legislation now being in effect for almost five years, it remains unknown to what degree the legislation has impacted youth and young adult vaping in Nova Scotia. As such, the 2024 Nova Scotia Youth & Young Adult Vaping Survey aimed to replicate the initial 2020 survey and infer to what extent Nova Scotia’s legislation has impacted vaping trends within the province. This Public Health Ontario (PHO) webinar will explore preliminary findings from this ongoing project.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the 2020 Youth and Young Adult Vaping Project, including its findings and how the recommendations led to legislative changes.
• Understand some of the preliminary findings from the 2024 Nova Scotia Youth & Young Adult Vaping Survey, including current vaping use patterns, product access, use of flavours, advertising, social media exposure to vaping, experiences with cessation, and tobacco use.
• Understand to what extent current vaping legislation in Nova Scotia has achieved its goal of reducing vaping among youth and young adults, as well as what additional measures may be needed.
