Generally, Power factor of all the appliances is Lagging in nature. We can see this in our house digital energy meter as 0.8 or 0.9 pf.
The lagging power factor is due to the inductance present in all the appliances such as windings in fan’s armature, Compressor in AC and Fridge etc.
All these appliances consume Lagging VAR for their operation. If the appliances consume more VAR then the efficiency of the machine is poor & losses occur.
Capacitors ideally only draw Reactive Power. They don't constantly absorb electrical energy as heaters and motors. Instead, they charge and then discharge.
They bounce the energy back to the source.
Capacitors supply the Lagging VAR required by the appliances. So, the Reactive power drawn from the Mains supply gets reduced. And the power factor of the system gets improved.
In a capacitor, the Current leads Voltage by 90 degrees. Therefore Active power drawn by the capacitor is zero. Capacitors either supply Lagging VARs or Consume Leading Vars.
