Somehow I don't resonate to de Maupassant as much as everyone else seems to; somehow his fiction leaves me feeling that the story isn't sturdy enough to carry the weight of his extravagant language. Listening to this one I couldn't help comparing it to my favorite Corsican vendetta story, Colomba by Prosper Merrimee. To me Colomba is more gripping than The Godfather. It's the basis of Howard Hughes's 1950 film Vendetta (I haven't seen it). I wonder if it's ever been adapted for radio.
