What I'd change in the next R&C game: ruclips.net/video/_y3aLkW07oE/видео.html
    Some notes:
    1. This list is definitive, any game not mentioned didn't actually come out, you're just imagining it.
    2. No but actually, reminder that any of the games I mentioned in the first category (the ones I haven't played) aren't featured later on because...I haven't played them! I'm sure any or every game in that list would've put up a fight in multiple categories. Resident Evil 4 is also halfway in that category - I did get a chunk of the way through but not far enough for me to feel comfortable talking about it besides "yeah it's pretty good." If I didn't mention it somewhere in the video, odds are I either just forgot or didn't get far enough into it.
    3. For some more talk about my 2024 video outline, I touched on that a bit in my 2024 State of the Channel video on TGB2: ruclips.net/video/voFc0aRnQAQ/видео.html
    4. Lies of Pee.

Heck yeah Cassette Beasts mention!!! Cassette beasts was my game of the year by a landslide and I’m still thinking about it to this day. As a lifelong Pokémon fan I fell in love with everything Cassette Beasts pulled off. The soundtrack is always in my playlist now alongside Xenoblade and Sonic

Hi-fi rush was basically the first game i played this year and it captured my enthusiasm INSTANTLY! i played that start to finish in just a few sessions and i loved every single second of it! giving it a replay soon because i truly adored it that much. the story is charming, yet has some great emotional moments. the writing is very funny, more than most games if you ask me and the art direction is fantastic. i don't think i need to mention music or sound design considering thats what the game is built around but yeah, that too. to me, a 10/10 experience

It's one of very few games out there that leans into the cringe "man if we were in a video game all this tutorial help would sound stupid" humor and makes it kinda work, and that's such a difficult thing to pull off. The first or second time they did that, that's when I knew I was 100% sold.

LAD Ishin and LAD Gaiden were two highlights of my year, Ishin not only for the "oh my God, this game that never released in the West finally came out" mystique it carried with it, but it also showed me how important the original Ishin was to the series in ways I wouldn't think of, how many of the smaller mechanics and elements from Yakuza 0 that I loved actually originated from Ishin and 0 just improved upon, and for also having one of my favorite soundtracks in the series.
As for Gaiden, I'll keep it vague since I don't know if you played it yet, but for me it felt like the perfect bridge between 6 and 7/8, it improved most every issue I had with Dragon Engine Kiryu's fighting style and gave one of the most fun to fuck around with coliseums in the series for letting you control every recruitable fighter in it. Both games felt like celebrations of the series to longtime fans and I can't wait for Infinite Wealth to consume all my free time next year!

I wasn't sure about Lies of P but your presentation of the game definitively sold me on it =).

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  9 месяцев назад

I've long thought about how I'd put together Pokemon stuff, because Kanto makes it so hard to start content-wise. Do you start with R/B? Yellow? The remakes? The other remakes? I don't feel like there's a great answer because each one (minus maybe Let's Go) has a part of that story, and like _fuck_ I'm playing a Pokemon region four times in a row for a video.
That plus the absolutely disgusting amount of history behind each game, cut/old designs, etc. means that whatever I'd do would be nothing like the usual style - hence why I've held off for now!

I just bought Baldur’s Gate 3 and I am so scared. I’ve only played a couple hours because I know what is going to happen if I pour my heart in, it’s already so captivating!
I’m just like you here, just for that reason TOTK is my game of the year. There are so many perfect sequences, my favorites being the Rito dungeon boss and the final boss. What a game.

FWIW, I would totally enjoy a Final Fantasy XVI video if you find you have the time/motivation for it ^_^ I tend to really enjoy seeing retrospectives/reviews that come out a while after a game's release, well removed from the launch day hubbub.
And great GOTY video overall! While I haven't clicked with a souls-like as of yet, with how much passion and affection you had when speaking of Lies of P's narrative, I could see it being the game to make that genre finally click with me.

Can very much recommend looking up No Straight Roads for being in a similar vein to HFR. It came out a few years earlier and it's got some fundamental design differences, though:
It's quite short (around six hours), and very boss-centric. Bosses attack to the rhythm of their boss theme, but you are still free to move however you wish. And different attacks align with different parts of the song, not just rhythm.
NSR in general is much more about music as a whole, not just about rhythm: Why people play it and what it means to them, as well as the effect that music as an industry can have on them and the other way around.
Plus, every individual boss has different replay settings, and around five different versions of the boss theme.
Normally the boss theme already has a Normal, Rock and EDM version, with it leaning more to Rock if you're doing better and more to EDM if the boss is getting the upper hand. But with a Christmas update and the Encore Edition, there's also a christmas-themed version and a custom remix by different artists for each boss theme.
Personally, in terms of charm and characters and tone, i've resonated with it more than Hi-Fi Rush. HFR is probably the more polished and technically complex game of the two and i can see people considering NSR as "The lesser Hi-Fi Rush" because of it, which... saddens me. Because it would be dividing people rather than bring them together to share something cool.
The upcoming Genokids may prove interesting as well. Indie game with character action/hack-and-slash gameplay featuring a rock band, though not nearly as focused on involving music within its gameplay. As you go on, you bring the band back together and can swap between them on the fly during gameplay. As a fan of the genre, it's nice to see smaller studios try to focus more on this genre again.
Which is also why i really liked Soulstice, which is a fun and solid character action/hack and slash game and first really big project by its dev studio, though not based around a theme of music.
Would also want to throw Charlie Murder out there. 2D beat-em-up RPG with a rockband where every member is a different class.
(And just because i like to spread the word: Check out games like The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, Cookie Cutter and Clash: Artifacts of Chaos as well).
Here's to hoping 2024 may be a year that brings a lot of good as well.

In all honesty, yes I would love to hear your thoughts and gushing about FF16 once all the DLC is out. I love that game quite a bit and I really liked Clive. Hell this was my first FF game I've ever played and beaten so it says a lot of how invested i got into it.

I've been a sentient Zelda dumpster fire since first playing OoT when I was 14 back in 1998. I LOVED TotK and it was absolutely my game of the year. I also agree that it has the best ending sequence of any Zelda game ever, and a final boss fight that's so fun I've lost count of how many times I've re-fought it. I dropped a travel gate right before the final jumping point to trigger endgame specifically for that reason.

You're probably going to die a lot, so just work on your parrying and take it slow. I can't say any fights gave me trouble in the first half of the game, so I feel like if you play patient you should get a good chunk through before hitting the wall - and by then hopefully you'll be hooked!

My games of the year are:
1: hi-fi rush. Got a series x this year just for this & it was worth it. It's my 6th favorite game of all time. Game of the year, & best art direction, cast, & action game.
2: re4 remake. This shocked me at how good it was. Literally on the same level as the og. Biggest surprise award, Seperate ways is my dlc of the year & luis is best glow-up.
3: Final Fantasy 16: So much fun, the story is incredible, the party is top 3 for me in the series, and i cried nonstop. Best story & music, Gav is unironically my character of the year & ben star is my performance of the year.
4: theaterhythm final fantasy: final bar line: yep, TWO final fantasy games made it. Best rhythm game.
5: Street Fighter 6: they did the unthinkable: followed up one of my biggest disappointments ever with one of the greatest fighting games ever. Best fighting game.
6: honkai: Star rail: Love the crap out of the world they've made here. Best rpg, & best phone game, i guess (i play on ps5).
The best game i discovered this year is powerwash simulator.
The best game i didn't play was baldur's gate 3.
The best game i need to go back to that came out this year is persona 5 tactica & dead space remake as a tie.
The biggest disappointment goes to Naruto x boruto: ultimate ninja storm connections. However, it's mainly just the history mode that's a disappointment there for me at the moment.
The Saddest moment was the announcement dissidia final fantasy: opera omnia is going to shut down in February next year. 😢
The worst news story was the game awards not addressing anything that people wanted addressed, being the layoffs & what's happening around the world at the moment, both of which are still happening as we speak.
