Do smart parents let their kids have smartphones? And if so, when?
Many parents feel overwhelmed by the challenges that come with navigating the digital world with their kids. There’s so much pressure to protect them, but often, they are unsure how, or even if, that’s possible. How do you go beyond rules that restrict and find ways to truly teach and empower your kids to make wise decisions?
Perhaps no issue brings all of these challenges to the forefront as much as smartphones.
This week on At Home with the Beveres, we invited our two oldest kids Asher and Sophie to join us, and we’re tackling the phone issue head on.
Tune in for some practical tools to help your family thrive in the digital age!

Life was so much easier when there was no internet and smart phones. But that train has left the station. This is a good idea to discuss phone use with our kids.

I have two young boys, these videos are SUCH a blessing as we navigate parenting. I love the honesty of your son! It shows you’ve given him a son-ship mindset. He knows he’s loved, you’re on his team, and he knows you want the best for him.

I love how he said “it gets confusing sometimes to see if I have the restrictions because my parents love me more OR is it just because they are stricter?” That’s so so smart because usually it’s immediately “they hate me!” Or “they are strict!” Rather than… hey they are doing me a favor with this

This is so good! My son just turned 12 and he wanted a phone but we said no, not quite yet. Even my own mother attempted to buy him a phone (secretly) and he got so upset about that idea because he knows it’s not allowed with us. Which I’m super proud of my son telling me. I love this discussion.

This is so good. Making me reconsider when to give the kids a phone. I got off IG a few years ago and it was one of the best decisions I made.

Soo good! I watched it with my teen and he connected so much with your son and the struggles between what is right and what his impulses want to do. Thank you to your family for sharing and being sincere!
Also, what is the Ted talk you guys mentioned watching with your kids? I’d love to watch with my kids as well.

Thank you, Bevere Family, for always being so transparent and relatable! I am so thankful that you arm your children and viewers/listeners with facts and information that support your decisions! You mentioned a lot of studies concerning the effects of social media on individuals of varying ages- is it possible for you to share the links to those studies or other information where we can see and share those findings?

I love that you’re talking about this. I got my oldest daughter a phone at 13 and we completely locked it down. Locking it down was a big frustration for her and as she got older, we unlocked it and then just put restrictions and time limits on everything. She still says that she feels like we got her a phone too early Our next daughter got her phone at 15. The way we did social media was they first have an account through my phone for at least the first year. That way I can see everything that’s going on. And they have to ask for my phone to look at it lol I think that worked out great and they seemed very happy with that, my daughter didn’t get Instagram on her own phone until she was 17.

I think that phones are not necessarily the problem, social media definitely is. My kids have a shared phone that has no internet or network. So they use it for music or pictures or whatever so for me it's not a big deal. I don't understand what a phone is for other than communication.

Well done parents. You raised your kids to be very self aware children. I believe this is possible because you makes it safe for them to speak. It shows how well you researched to make an informed decision for your children. I don’t have any children yet I am a high school teacher and I can see how damaging social media has become. It’s terrifying!!
    We must pray for parents.

We were talking about this issue in our church leadership meeting. Parents feel their teens are glued to their phones. I noticed it when teaching the youth class two weeks ago. Three youth were told to keep their phones off during class.

Also- do you consider you tube social media if your child has a you tube channel and is talking to kids and getting subscribers and likes?

    🎉🎉***ATTENTION***🎉🎉
My family and I have a blended dynamic. We have all boys, 2 of which have phones. At our home we have rules and structure. Not so much at the other parents. Can your podcasts include more practical ways to implement structure and obedience in blended families in EVERY SITUATION?
We pray for the other parents that they come to know the Lord and we also know that we can only control our household and keep doing our thing God's way, but it becomes discouraging and disheartening when the boys choose things contrary to what is being taught in our home.
