General Electric 5,050 BTU Room Air Conditioner Model AEL05LVQ2

- The General Electric branded air conditioner in the vacation house.. Sold under the GE name, but manufactured by some crazy Chinese company that nobody's heard of.. Model AEL05LVQ2 with 5,050 BTU cooling capacity.. Other than the explosive refrigerant, these seem like satisfactory units for now--it's still too soon to tell how well these stand the test of time..

Bought 3 GE's in 2013-4, one like this. Home Depot's all had a wave in the vertical lines of the grill, like this one, the GE's at other stores had straight grill lnes. There was only one GE logo on the units, older ACs had the logo on the outside, too. The compressors had a Chinese name I never heard of. I think Haier now owns the GE name for home appliances. They worked OK for 4 summers til I sold them.
These seem decent for what they are.
Over the years I've tried them all and general electric window air conditioners are the best by far
Their old ones from 50 years ago were great, their new stuff is junk. They don't even make it anymore, they're just a name.
@@JordanU I have 3 general electrics and they crank work great and are nowhere near 50 years old lol
@@senseichess8688 They won't last long, none of the units made today do.
@@JordanU maybe not but they cool places off Alot better than the rest...thats important to me
@@JordanU got one thats 3 years old another in box still and a larger one that's 11 years old .work great still
Coming back to this video to say that mine is on it's 5th cooling season and it still runs fine. Surprisingly.
Did you drill a hole in the pan to let the water out?
@@JordanU still needs to he done unfortunately.
hey! i have this ac. i’m trying to clean it, as a lot of dirt has built up on the inside (especially where the air comes out). i’ve looked up tutorials, but the front piece will just not come off! any tips of disassembly and/or cleaning this specific unit? thanks for any and all help!
Have you removed the knobs?
I am having the same problem now. Can you tell me how to take it off please?
@@lashawnm5981 what ended up working for me is to unscrew the panels on all sides. then take a pair of pliers and pull the knobs straight off. the knobs help hold on the front panel which is what i had difficulty removing. after that everything should come straight off! let me know if you need more help!
I have one with the annoying electronic controls. The fan recirculating is a huge problem when it gets hot because it only cools half as much as it should. If it got bad enough, I would tape a piece of cardboard under the grille. It's truly a shame that air conditioner manufacturers just don't have brains anymore.
I would put a piece of cardboard there to direct the air away from the evaporator all the time, it would work much better.
@@JordanU Thankfully, I don't use that unit anymore. My current unit has a register that aims upwards.
Good unit for now. Great video I enjoyed.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video..
Great video of the GE (General Electric) AEL05LVQ2 Air Conditioner Test Jordan!
Thanks, but it was more intended to be a demonstration than a test..
@@JordanU - Oh. Right. Sorry about that.
I have that at camp.
Thanks for letting me know.
My Aunt has this exact same one in her Upstairs Bonus Room
OK
My AC is broken so I have one of these keeping my bedroom ice cold for now
OK
Not really huge on A/C but great video Jordan.
Thanks
Im thinking about getting one of these.
They're OK if you get one for cheap or free, but I wouldn't spend the retail price on one of these. They cool OK but I doubt they're going to last more than a few years.
Jordan U they probably only last like 6 years. I definitely think these are the best modern 5000 btu units along with the arctic king and Frigidaire units.
I have an Arctic King 5,000 that I got out of the trash. I brought it to work and use it there. It doesn’t have a really nice sound to it and it doesn’t get R22 cold, but it does make my office more comfortable, which is really its only purpose. This spring I’ll probably bring it home to clean and add a condensate drain.
If its general electric..you cant go wrong they are nice
@@senseichess8688 Yeah I got one and its decent, the only thing I don’t like about it is the coils are very thin.
I don't think R410A is explosive. R32 is flammable for sure though and is starting to appear in new units. Goes without saying R22 is a superior refrigerant to all of the new ones and the phase out of R22 is a complete gimmick. Just a scheme for companies to make money on new systems. R22 barely contributes to ozone depletion. Yeah rotary compressors just don't compare to reciprocating compressors in terms of sound quality or durability. Your Westinghouse unit sounds much nicer than this one for sure.
@khalil’s Heat and air conditioner repair You've got it all right. I'm disgusted by the phase out of R22. I will continue using my R22 ac unit until either the compressor dies or it leaks. Otherwise I have no plans to move to a garbage refrigerant. Let alone the new units are garbage quality anyway. What's even more unacceptable is the phase out of R134A. That was supposed to be an eco friendly refrigerant to begin with!
R410A is flammable but only in certain conditions which won't arise in any typical use case.. However, if a source of ignition is present, such as a tech's welding torch, the risk is there.. R32 is far more dangerous than R410A.. I agree that R22 is better, and I also agree that these new refrigerants are nothing more than a revenue generating scheme.. Like many of the other 'environmental protection' movements, they make little logical sense.. The amount of carbon and waste resulting from properly disposing of all existing units and manufacturing and shipping new ones will far outweigh the supposed damage that occurs from the atypical scenario where someone improperly disposes of an air conditioner or other refrigeration system..
@@andrewg593 I will continue to use my R22 units as well.. If they quit (which I don't expect), I'll find another vintage replacement.. If they leak, I'll repair the leak and charge it back up with more R22..
@@JordanU R22 is gonna become very expensive (more than it already is) after this year. I won't even use a drop in replacement. Only R22. I never plan to upgrade from an R22 system either.
Andrew G That’s definitely inevitable, but I think it may stay around on eBay for a while still..
How is the cooling power? Will it cool a master bedroom?
Whether or not it can cool your room depends on tons of factors. How well is the house insulated? How many people occupy the room? What electronic equipment runs in the room? Are there windows facing the south side? How high is the ceiling? Etc.
@@JordanU i have one of these i dont know if it the same model but mine makes a lot of noise.
@@miguelangelcolon1345 OK
Any other ac units at the vacation house?
Nope, this was the only one..
What are the measurements on this ac ? Thinking about buying one before the summer is here .
I don't know, the measurements can probably be found on the GE, or another retailer's, website.
@@JordanU be careful about seller's advertised dimensions L X W X H, length and width could mean different things. Some call width the depth and the length refers to the side to side window related measurement
@@John-ev3rm Outrageous, those measurements should be standard.
I know it’s been a year but how do you remove the filter to clean for this unit? Do u remember
I believe it slides out the right side.
