As an old retired man with two grown children, I'd like to say Congratulations!! on your new home! You're a hard worker and you and your family deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor. It's a beautiful home in a beautiful setting, thanks for sharing with us.
I am a wood processing technologist but this house was built by contractors. I only did the first excavating and I was the supporting force throughout the whole build when something was needed like water for compacting the backfill sand etc.
Such a beautiful home you've created! So awesome. Very stylish. I especially like the fireplace, and with the floor heating you'll be toasty all winter. As with all your projects, a cut above, well beyond form and function, with extra style and finesse! Thanks again for sharing, your projects, and inspiration...
I hate to say it but it was a pre-made house in a factory and finished by a hired contractor. I was only a supporting / preparing force while it was built (my part was the initial excavating and dirt and rock hauling). Nevertheless, it took a fair chunk out of my usual project build time.😀
@@DonnDIY yes even though it may be made from an outside source, and others helped build your house, but it is you who Has built your family a home. And at times letting others do the labor is the smartest action...
@@kattihatt yes true, but I wasn't trying to be esoteric about it, like calling concrete, cement . Just a compliment with the idea comparing a house, simply a building, a material object vs a home, being a state of mind, a warm safe loving environment, etc. Not all houses are home. I think most people have visited a house at some time or another, often a real nice house, yet it felt cold, uninviting, uncomfortable, or just heavy feelings. But this house has been made into a beautiful home! Very warm and welcoming feeling just watching the tour inside. All the craftspeople involved did an awesome job. Thanks for sharing.
The old building looked well made, should have been amazing when new with all that square wood! The new one became great too in it's own way! Good work!
Building technology is so much more advanced in Estonia than in the US. Much more focus on energy efficiency, incredibly impressed with it all. Ground transfer heat pumps are almost unknown here, and no one bothers to try and salvage materials when demolishing an old barn! Really impressive from start to finish.
Paying attention to energy efficiency in Europe is currently "the thing". I'm glad about it though, this means less money spent on electricity after the high initial cost of geothermal heat pump and ground work. I hope this system is worth it in the long run.👍
That foundation has a lot going on. I'd love to see a video describing how your geothermal system works. I live in South Central Texas, and seeing how other folks build always fascinates me.
How it works? Your kitchen refrigerator has cold pipes inside the freezer and warm pipes (radiator) in the backside. Ground source heat pump is basically scaled up refrigerator turned inside out, where the cold part is burrowed to the earth outside 1 meter (3..4 ft) below the surface and the warm side is inside the building. And then there is cabinet with compressor and two circulation pumps. Refrigerator takes energy from inside the fridge, heat pump takes energy from earth (where it warms up again during summer), one of the cheapest source of heat. When comparing to electric radiators then ~5x cheaper choice here in 59th Latitude. I think ground source heat pump combined with heated floors is most popular heating choice here in Estonia - I also live in a house with same solution.
Not surprised to see the ground source loops going in plus the in floor radiant system. Great choice and an investment that will pay back quickly plus the benefit of the AC for hotter months. Looks like a beautiful house that the 3 of you will be very happy in especially once you get that deck complete to sit on and enjoy your morning coffee.
Wow! I just had flashbacks to 2016 when I built my house about the same size! Can be overwhelming at times and so much work but it’s an amazing accomplishment when it’s done! Enjoy your home Donn, well deserved!
That's what you've been up to, sneaky dog. A fantastic home for you and your family. Have many happy years there making memories you can cherish. All you need now is a workshop :)

Great video Donn and family. What a view you have and the house is fantastic. You have done well and we wish you a bigger future for all you do. Stay safe and keep up the great videos and fun around there. You have a lovely family. Fred.
Dear @Donn, I must admit at first I thought "oh no, they are tearing down the historic block house..." but your new house is just great, and of course orders of magnitude more livable. Floor heating, large windows, ventilation system, a large porch overlooking the garden. Simply a dream! I wish you and your loved ones many happy years in this house😍
Someone years ago placed all those big stones by hand, I'll bet some of the wood from the roof was great and I hope you saved some for future projects. House look very nice, best wishes to you and your family
Very well done handling the dismantling of the old structure, save what you can and reuse as much as possible, less waste generated and more projects to look forward to whenever you figure out what you want to do with what was saved. Beautiful house and what looks like a great yard for gardening just out the back door.
I was intrigued with the beauty and strength of the old dwelling that was probably well over 100 yr old and then what seemed to be extravagance in the footings of the new home. I would like that explained, why it was so deep etc
The place where the old house was located was super mushy and clayish. During wet season one could sink in just by standing there. So the footing of the house had to be dug deep where it's more stable. And for insulation reasons as well - where we live there is the possibility that the ground freezes 1m/3ft in depth and the footing of the foundation has to be deeper than that so the expanded frozen ground wouldn't lift the house up and destroy it in the process. All the pipes and tubes are for heating purposes.
Well done it a very nice home to live in lot of work with great results may you and your family have a lifetime of happy times there all the way from Ireland 🇮🇪
It's about time you had a fireplace of your own to burn some of that firewood you have been producing! I'm sure that was a very special first fire when you lit that hearth. Awesome house- hope you will trot out the rest of it, the planning, selection of the kit, that was a pretty trick HVAC system, as well as heated floors- you know, the details! Great new hearth and home for you and your family!
congratulations Donn, makes me feel guilty when I'm anxiously waiting for the next post and you've been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest! awesome house, now the Mrs. and little one will make it a home ! awesome, so proud of your accomplishments, to think back when you remodeled the barn into a workshop! be thankful for what you have and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
The home of the great metalworkers and inventers family is starting to look really nice! Glad that in the end you altered the height of the front yard. On the weather conditions we have the lovest framing board is supposed to be 30-60cm from the ground.
