It's been decades since I've seen this miniseries, but everyone looks so different than I remember! Arigato, Leonidas-San. Domo for sharing this. I thought the show was Brilliant as well. Yes, it is over 1200 pages in Clavell's novel. I agree with your insightful words 100%! The costumes and characteristics of the Japanese people and culture caused many of us to fall in love with Japan and the Japanese people. And Richard Chamberlain did a wonderful job, as did Yoko Shimada as Mariko-San. How wonderful that your cat is named after her. What a wonderfu legacy! Arigatogozaimasu! 👍

True magic between Richard Chamberlain, and Yoko Shimada. The chemistry made this a top 5 Mini-Series. And true to James Clavell's Masterpiece I am blessed with a 1975 first print edition of Shogun, and cherish it
Remember watching this back in the day. Loved it. There's hardly anything going on here on the surface and yet so much is happening in the heads of everyone involved. Fine acting and directing, letting the scene breathe. So rare today.
Yoko Shimada’s subtle elegance it this scene is lovely to watch. When she acknowledges Anjin-San then her subtle look forward tells him and we the viewers to focus your attention on Lady Ochiba. The new girl doesn’t even come close to connecting with the viewers like Shimada-San did.

I read the book in the 1970s and watched this tv series in the 1980s! great cinematography, great space and pace. Wow! to see it again, appreciation increases.
He gives the Japanese a new custom and humbles himself in front of her! That makes everyone think that this barbarian might have something to teach them!
Anjin is the ultimate opportunist. He has a truly remarkable sense to make the most out of every opportunity that comes his way. Among the Samurai and the Imperial Court his public image would have soared into legendary status after this audience.
At this stage of the story, Blackthorne had elevated himself to samurai status (see his sword!) and so, was way above the other barbarians. It was him, who insisted to be called anjin-SAN, thus accepting the customs of his surroundings, in contrast to the other Europeans in Japan.
I had pretty much forgotten how much I was entranced by Yoko Shimada as Lady Mariko. Anna Sawai has done a fantastic job in carrying on the role in the 21st. Century. But for sheer elegance and unearthly beauty, Yoko Shimada IS Lady Miriko.
Hai, Mike-San. We agree with you 100% There is a timeless elegance and demure that Yoko Shimada brought to the role of Mariko-San, and it is unmatched, with, as you properly said, unearthly beauty. In my open as well, Yoko Shimada IS Lady Mariko. Outstanding comment and observation. Arigatogozaimashita. 👍
@@theshogunchannel And I'm going to look into Yoko Shimada's career as an actress to see if there are other films with her in them that are available somewhere. i was very impressed with her.
I totally agree. I'm not that impressed with the remake. The original is better in my opinion, because of three very good reasons; Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga, Richard Chamberlain as Blackthorne, and Yoko Shimada as Mariko.
I was a kid when I watched this series, and it was riveting. Many of the characters were complex, the acting was first rate and the storyline was engrossing.
Hai, AtticStattic-San. I think Yoko Shimada had so many millions of men fall in love with her. Beautiful, graceful, elegant in her movements and speech. An amazing woman and actress. Arigatogozaimashita.
Is amazing how you can have a historical movie, with the actors playing characters from another era, and wear clothes of that era, yet somehow still have a 70's-80's aesthetic.
I prefer this version and the original novel over the newer series and this scene illustrates a large part of it. The book and the original miniseries do a far better job of illustrating Blackthorne's hero's journey. In the modern version Blackthorne learns enough of the language and customs to get by, but doesn't fundamentally change who he is. In the book and the original series, however, Blackthorne assimilates into Japanese culture and custom to the point where he and other reflect that he has become more Japanese than European in his habits and attitudes. This scene shows the way he deftly navigates the culture of the court in ways that the modern version of Blackthorne never could. That version is still a gaijin, still a barbarian in his heart, where this version truly is Samurai.
The old John Balckthorne is the best. The new one looks like a 20 years-old zoomer who is slightly drunk most of the time and he just doesn't give a crap!
Totally agree. He's a shadow of the Blackthorne in the book, no intelligence or guile, as beautifully made as the new series is I can't watch any more of it!
@@MichaelWilliams-mo1vv Tai-Pan, King Rat and I think a couple more I forget. Not the same characters or exact settings but the books were written as a sort of series
I do not understand the obsession to "remake" Classic that don't need to be remade which are flawless in their casting (both English & especially the Japanese actors & actress), production, score and rather than remaking it, why not complete the James Clavell's Asia Saga; there are four other novels remaining (Tai-Pan & NobleHouse already produce) in conjunction with the "re-release" theatrically for new audience. If they do plan on producing all of them and not just Shogun, then I will be impress in their ambition vision but I doubt heavily, for they are not that creative, hence the remake aiming for another GOT success rather than sincerely unveiling this novel to a new audience without "modern revisionist of history." There is already a warning sign, when they aren't giving credit to the author JAMES CLAVELL'S SHOGUN in the title or trailers. And it is just me or does this cinematography appears too dark? I understand the different style regarding 1970s & 1980s TV production verse cinematic direction of photography in film but nevertheless one looks gloomier than the other while the other celebrate the beautiful light of the island of the rising sun. Thus far visually in costuming and production I am bias, but prefer the original by far. The score alone brings back memories of watching it aired from my childhood, the epic scope set the standard for all TV min-series for that decade.
Hai, ZenenNILugo-San! Very excellent comment and insight. We agree with you 100%! It could be that Disney's Shogun 2024 is attempting to "rewrite History" with their agenda, as you stated with "modern revisionist" history. And yes, there is a new "blue tint" that is added to the new Shogun that makes it dark and grim, and apparently it was shot and filmed in Canada. As you know the 1980s Shogun was shot and filmed in Japan. Yes, the other had the beautiful light, which endeared us all to Japan. Yes, agreed, the Kimonos that were "hand made" in the 1980s version were far more colorful and beautiful - whereas, in the 2024 Kimonos do not even reflect the Brown - Toranaga's and Grays - Ishido's Samurai. And finally, yes, the musical score by Maurice Jarre was absolutely epic. Shogun 1980 was arguably the "Best" TV Miniseries possibly of all time. Such excellent comments! Arigatogozaimasu!!! 👍
Fully agree with you. One cannot improve on an already classic series. In the original series, the entire dialogue from the book was used as well as all descriptions from it was filmed, something extremely rare. No way I will even bother to view the new version as the few clips shown says it all...total crap.
Hai, Michael-San. You are so right. Screenwriter and Producer Eric Bercovici took most of the lines directly from the novel, and there was very little oversight from NBC and Paramount because the crew was in Japan. And the result, with very little oversight, was an absolute Masterpiece. Agreed: One cannot improve on an already classic series. Excellent comment: Very well stated. Arigatogozaimasu, Michael-San.@@michaelbrandt5416
I have not read the book, but I have seen the 1980 series & am currently watching the new version. The 1980 version was more drama focused and a bit sanitised. Whereas the cinematography & action sequenses of the new version feel more realistic to me. Both are works of quality.
I thought the 1980 version was great in it's day. That being said, the 2024 version has a lot going for it - there's pros and cons to both, but the new Shogun is telling the story in a somewhat different light. Much more emphasis in the first 4 episodes of the complex politics and intrigue that were less present in the old one. The 80's series seemed to focus way more on the romance between Mariko and Blackthorn. That's OK, but seeing this current show gives the story new life.
Hai, NY Jazzman-San. I agree with you. I only wish they would have hired a Super Talented Composer like Maurice Jarre for the music, instead of using keyboards. And, I wish that they hadn't used that Blue-Tint Filter, and, filmed it in actual Japan, so that we can view the landscape of the land. Finally, I wish that Shogun 2024 wasn't always raining, cloudy, and miserable weather, in "The Land Of The Rising Sun". Arigatogozaimashita. 👍🎌

Typical for Japanese films in general. It's reading the room, the expressions on the other person's face, physical reactions and acknowledgement. understanding without needing to say a word.
Richard Chamberlain's Blackthorne is far superior to the 2024 remake's Blackthorne. It's like the original Terminator's Kyle Reese vs genysis's Kyle Reese.

Well its bcuz in 2024 version Blackthorne is in a more hostile and negative environment overall compared to this version so he can not express his feelings openly I assume whereas in this one nobody really gets offended from what he does
Hai, William-San! Very excellent comment! You are absolutely correct: It appears that James Clavell also wrote: Tai-Pan, King Rat, and Noble House, which were set, I believe, in China, and Thrump-O-Moto, which was also in Japan in 1976. Thus far, I have only read Shogun, but would like to explore the others. Arigatogozaimasu. 👍
Iye, Besscollins3163-San. It did not have subtitles on purpose, because the Director and Producer both wanted the viewing audience to feel as if they were in Anjin-San's shoes, and it was very effective. @@keithdavies1395 - I get that. In the mini series, there is a narrator that explains things when they speak Japanese. You don’t need to know the exact words cause you know why he is there and what he is doing. I was a kid when this first aired and we had a Japanese exchange student living with us. We asked her what was being said. She said the same thing as the narrator just more politely. Meaning we know he was there to give a gift, the gift insulted some and fascinated others. The women who’s birthday it was, liked the gift. That’s what they said but more politely. More formal, more filler words to explain how polite it was that she got the gift. Her show of favor was a polite jester to do in public. All that just to say, thank you for the flower. 🌸 That’s what all was said. Again the narrator said this before and after the scene. The only reason this is in the mini series is to learn the name of the players. The man next to her, Lord Ito, was all that mattered in this scene and his show of displeasure. He was shown up. He could not retaliate, that would make him a bad host. This in return Saved Anji/Pilot. Again all talked about by the narrator.
The 2024 version adds so much new material to the Japanese side of the story that it loses a hundred different small events that made nearly every scene in the 1980 miniseries memorable, even profound. And frankly none of the characters in the 2024 version are particularly appealing.

I love the original show getting and I love the New one although the third episode of the new 1 was kind of boring and I liked the old version of Blackthorn distracting the troops from Is toronaga
Hai, Jtee-San. Unfortunately, there are no English captions, unless RUclips has put them in. Also, I had to cut it short because RUclips has strict copyright guidelines, and I have had many video scenes that were blocked or rejected because they were too long in length. This scene leads into another scene where Mariko tells Blackthorne that she was prevented by Lord Ishido from doing her duty, and she must commit Seppuku. It should be in the Playlists Section, where I have tried to tie many of these scenes together. Enjoy. Arigatogozaimashita. 👍
This scene is from the 1980 Miniseries called "Shogun", which is based very closely on the novel written by James Clavell. It tells the historical story of William Adams, who was the first Englishman to arrive on the shores of Japan. An absolute wonderful Miniseries. Hope you get a chance to see it, or you can just watch it all on this channel.
I think that all the samurai were honored to wear their hair like that as it was a sort of badge indicating that they were Samurai and not Ronin, the lords could wear their hair as they pleased as they were the heads of their respective clans.
C'est une excellente question. J'ai regardé ma copie DVD et elle ne contient que des sous-titres anglais. Il existe des versions en allemand et en espagnol, mais je n'en ai trouvé aucune en français. There is just no comparison between the 1980 Shogun masterpiece and the current drab, dull, bland current remake. The perpetually perplexed looking Cosmo Jarvis, with his stage voice and inability to emote, is way out of his league here. The cultural significance of lack of facial expression in interactions necessitates the ability to provide subtle clues to convey meaning and feeling to what is being discussed. None of that is evident in the new version. It would've been more enjoyable if they just ran it with a narrator and without any actor's speaking at all! The re-make is a "piece" alright, just not a masterpiece! The 1980 Shogun is the Masterpiece, and Richard Chamberlain will always be Blackthorne, a true Samurai!
I watched the new FX version of Shogun(I read the book) & was greatly disappointed. The principal characters seem extremely shallow compared to Chamberlin & actors playing Mariko Ishido & others. The scenery & costumes are also dark & gloomy. I much prefer the 1980 version!!
Hai, Elaine-San. Excellent comment. I agree with you completely and very much appreciate your comment. Agreed: the principal characters seem shallow, and like they are just reading their lines, in comparison to the wonderful actors and actresses of Shogun 1980. Hai, the scenery is dark and gloomy because they have used a Blue Tint Filter that makes everything look like a rainy and cloudy day in Japan: The Land of the rising sun (cf. Japan's Flag = Sunshine). It was mostly filmed in B.C., Canada, which has a completely different landscape and growing zone than Japan. Also, the costumes which are described in the novel are not bright, beautiful, and hand-made as the Kimonos that were made for Shogun 1980. I much prefer Shogun 1980 as well. Arigatogozaimashita.
@@theshogunchannel thank you so much! I am a fan of Japanese culture but not an expert as you are! I am motivated by my personal taste & limited understanding & study!

Hai, Benuticone-San. I agree 100%. Excellent Comments. Arigato Gozaimashita. 👍

If they do plan on producing all of them and not just Shogun, then I will be impress in their ambition vision but I doubt heavily, for they are not that creative, hence the remake aiming for another GOT success rather than sincerely unveiling this novel to a new audience without "modern revisionist of history."
There is already a warning sign, when they aren't giving credit to the author JAMES CLAVELL'S SHOGUN in the title or trailers.

If you had seen the mini series, you’d have known the narrator explains it all before and after this scene.
@@auntiem873 I meant for when they're speaking Japanese.
🌸
That’s what all was said.
Again all talked about by the narrator.
and for those who saw this original, how as the flower received?
The 2024 version adds so much new material to the Japanese side of the story that it loses a hundred different small events that made nearly every scene in the 1980 miniseries memorable, even profound. And frankly none of the characters in the 2024 version are particularly appealing.

I don't see anything of that on Anna Sawai's face. She constantly looking very... how can I say? Somehow absent minded. This is not the way it is supposed to be.

I agree with you 100%: No offense to Anna Sawai, but she looks absent-minded, disgusted, uninterested, annoyed, and those are not very attractive qualities, and certainly not ones that reflect the character, Mariko-San. Yoko Shimada did such a fantastic job, but Anna had Yoko Shimada to study, and to emulate, and to attempt the inner beauty that she had. Finishing up a Side-By-Side of Blackthorne drawing The Map Of The World: Shogun Showdown for this week. My eyes always watch Shogun 1980 when side by side, and the sound of the beautiful Shamisen in the background, makes Osaka Castle, at the lake, look wonderful! Hai, I know the scene you are speaking of: The Amida Tong Assassin is a, wait for it, Woman! Of course, they had to sneak a little gender-switch in there somewhere, after all, it's Walt (33rd Degree DeMolay Freemason) Disney and Company. Hopefully, many will come to this channel to view The Original Masterpiece, beloved by millions: Shogun (1980). Excellent Comment, Tomodachi. Arigatogozaimashita. @@joergw.8244 👍
god damn this is slow and boring
Hai, Chewy-San. When you have not watched the entire 9-hour Miniseries, this particular scene can seem boring and slow, but if you watch the rest of Shogun (1980), you will definitely be convinced of it's brilliance. Practice patience, and do yourself a favor, and watch it some time from beginning to end. You will be very glad you did. Arigatogozaimashita.
