  • Part 5. Good spar materials include wooden dowels and carbon fiber (aka: graphite) arrow shafts. Prices range from US$2-3 for wood dowels and US$3-7 for arrows at Wal-Mart, Cabelas, and others. Dowels are widely available and easy to work with. Carbon arrows are light, very durable, and joinable by threaded inserts.
An easy and economical method of building an actual airfoil for an RC airplane wing out of inexpensive foamboard, hot glue, and packing tape. Almost as easy to make and much better lift and stall characteristics than a KF or flat-plate wing. This is just the wing construction - overall airplane design is up to the builder! I hope to see some innovative airplanes using this wing design.

I love your videos! Another shaft joining method that has worked for me is to use target arrow shafts (usually fiberglass) and insert them inside the larger carbon arrow shafts. The target shaft will fit exactly inside the carbon hunting-style shaft, negating the need for the arrow inserts and screw. The archery pros have an endless supply of remnants from newly sized target shafts that they will be happy to give you. This may make your already amazing designs even better!

Ed, you are brilliant! What great ideas!

That's a pretty great idea. Would you consider making a video response to this one, detailing the fiberglass poles? It sounds pretty cool, but I'm pretty sure we don't have them in Phoenix where it never snows. Thanks!

It seems the carbon shafts would be more balanced across the whole length whereas
a wooden rod could have knots within & cause more dense areas? I don't know how
that might affect the flight but more balanced makes sense. This brings the idea of
finding broken fishing rods for a possible inexpensive spar? These videos are all so
inspiring to the new pilot..... aka me. thanks for the tips.

@AdrenalinRusher Wow, that's a screamin' deal on spars! Michigan maybe closer to the trees and dowel mills than Arizona? $1 carbon arrows would be awesome. I'll have a twin motor how-to sometime soon.

Probably pretty strong, might bend in a crash. I would just be careful to keep your receiver antenna well clear (6"+) away from the aluminum spar and you would be OK.

That glider is defunct, but the Photon motorglider also on my channel is as good or better in many respects. You could add a third 30" wing panel to get a really efficient glider.

@WalneySkyland Oh how I yearn for the metric system!! 32 is indeed the tpi. "8" is the Unified Thread Standard (UTS) #8 size which is 4.166mm diameter. My guess is that the arrow inserts you would be using would be metric and have a screw size to match. You could try some fancy size conversions but I bet it would be easier just to ignore the specs I give and just ask the archery guys where you are.

Sure, tomorrow I will. Right now one of my finished wings is a KF airfoil, simply because I couldn't for the life of me find any of that tape that you use, so I didn't want to go and build that (in my opinion) much nicer wing without it being final-ish.

Awesome videos. I live in Michigan and can get dowels at Meijer (just like Walmart) for 50c - 1$. Same with the arrows, about 1$ a piece w/o a practice tip. Your over paying :) See how much they are at wall mart might be cheaper ? Very nice wings btw. I will keep watching, I want to see how you attach the dual motors to the wings, I always have problems with that. I have a ton of 1$ tree foam in the basement, just keep using pink foam because I am used to it. Thanks again its apprecated

They're down to about $4 now, and you can order identical CF tube online for about the same, but no nocks or fletching or labeling. Even better!

@WalneySkyland Very nice! You probably know more about this than me. Though it wasn't your focus, if any arrow insert thread sizes for the UK incidentally turn up let me know and I'll post them.

    Hi E at 2:32
Get some super strong button sewing thread and wind tightly each side of centre for about an inch each side and secure with CA glue, that joint will never split

I too have found the orange fiberglass rods at Home Depot as did ITman496. At my store here in Austin, TX they are still $1.98 for a 48" rod. I cut a foot off on of the scraps I had and weighed it. It came in at 27 grams. Somewhat heavier than wood or C/F but the price is right and it is very stiff. My testing wasn't up to your standards, I held the rod at the ends and tried to bend it to breaking. I could not break it. It was hard to bend it very far. I bought some of them for trial spars in some wings that I am currently building. They are 5/16" in dia. and have a reflective band at one end. They are very easy to cut with a hacksaw and deburr the ends with some sandpaper.

    Hey!
I followed this guide, and discovered a new material for spars that (in my opinion) works rather well!
When I was at home depot, looking for the dowels, I did find them, but on the way, found those poles you put into the ground for plows in the snow so they don't hit the curb. The neon orange ones. They cost about.. what, just under two dollars? And are at LEAST 48 inches long, and a LOT stronger then a dowel of similar size, as I found out at the store, when I accidentally broke one..

Carbon + metal - heavier than wood alone? Also wood has no RFI problems for radio reception & transmission? Just a possiblity ...
