What an amazing Dahon bike with rich components. I have Dahon Hemingway D8 2019, upgraded rear shifter and derailleur to Shimano Claris and plan to upgrade to 451 wheelset to give it some more speed.
the speed is largely dependent on the front chainring and rear cog size. My Dahon D8 had gearing for climing and hilly area thus much slower, the Mu SL had gearing for road riding with a 50T front crank and 11/32T rear setup, perfect for going fast.
@@TheGizmoGarage My Dahon comes with 53T front and 11-32T rear, so it’s pretty speedy and I have never had any problems climbing hills but 451 wheel will add some more speed :)
Amaizing bike. Got the 2015 model Dahon Mu Sl 10(white frame, white handle post, silver seat post, with white sram apex derailleur, brake levers, and cantilever brakes). Never gonna sell mine.
Sweet! I'm contemplating selling my Mu SL after I got a folding eBike... But last week I took it out, dusted it up and did a small ride and then decided to keep it for just bit longer...
@@TheGizmoGarage What I don't understand is why in 2022 Dahon don't have a successor to this marvel. Everyone goes on about the Mariner D8. But that's a heavy slow bike compared to this.
*Nice bike man, you should upgrade your old friction riddled square tapered bottom bracket and crankset to hollowtech. On my folding bike I have 58T chainring with 11-28 freewheel, Shimano Deore XT shifter/ RD and I average 18 mph on flats. I just ordered an 80T chainring so I'm going to see what my top speed will be with the 80T when it comes in. After that I will upgrade the wheelset to a nice double layer wheelset with cassette. The bike already has Shimano hollowtech 2 bottom bracket and shimano hydraulic disc brakes so now I just need a bigger chainring and cassette wheelset then this should be a really nice, fast bike. The looks on the guys on road bikes with big 26-28" wheels is priceless when I fly by them on this little foldie.*
Sweet. I've ridden thousands of miles on it already, the FSA ISIS drive cartridge bottom bracket works pretty good to be honest. I do have an X0 shifter and 10 speed rear derailleur and cassette sitting there ready for the upgrade, but really honestly haven't seen the need to upgrade... The stock setup works wonderful, plus my commute now is only 2.5 miles which is like a 10 min ride for me. Enjoy your ride.
Sadly not many folding bikes manufactures make super lightweight and well-designed folding bikes anymore. Most just focus on super heavy utilitarian city bikes nowadays.
Seen one on Craigslist same model for $600 and seller said upgraded the shifters to trigger. Thinking about it but don’t do much traveling but thinkin of flying to Vegas one of these days and want to bike around, and full size big bikes which I have would be a pain for luggage
Not sure how safe would be to bring it through the checked luggage if you have a specific folding bike box that can safely store it for checked bag. The folding mechanism can not take on too much abuse and will unfold easily during storage unless there is some sort of bungee cord keeping the whole piece together.
It only creaks when the locking mechanism needs a retightening. Otherwise very quiet. I ride it harder than my regular bikes and it held up well. And easy to upgrade too
Hi Li. I was so glad when I found your video about this Dahon MU SL bike because I didn't have a clue when I bought a similar bike a few weeks ago (not sure if it was a 2008 or 2009 model) for $200. The seller generously gave me a set of fenders and rear rack still in plastic wrap. My bike is also in good condition but it's not as good as yours. The rear tire has kept losing air so I think it needs a new inner tube (AV-6 = 20 x 1 1/8 - 1.5 = 95?). The bike didn't come with kickstand. Do you know where I can buy it? Also, I'd like to replace the original grips with ones that are similar to yours. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Nice to hear you got a good deal! Yes, go to your bike shop, they should have 20" tire inner tubes for sale. As for tire, I switched the one out with city tires: Kenda Kwest 20x1.5 tires, they are pretty bomb proof. The grips are Ergo grips: amzn.to/3now7Mj Kickstand is generic: amzn.to/2XaIK2c
Im negotiating for one right now! They want 600, Im offering 450, with shipping and the bag included. Double the price you recommend but its pristine and these bikes are kind of hard to come by.
@@TheGizmoGarage Thats my thought! Although a beat up speed uno for under $100 may be what I actually need (a 3rd bike I can lock up/lose to NYC bike thieves without minding too much) but damn the Mu SL is a cool folder!
internal folding adds more friction. Direct external cabling is best for braking feel. I've ridden over 1000 miles and those cables were never needing replacement.
I have this bike and it’s awesome. All the things you said and more. I’d never sell it.
Me too. I love mine

Hi, can I wheel it when folded? I am thinking to buy a second handed.
Gorgeous bike.
It indeed is a good looking bike!

I get the same reaction when I go lightspeed on my Tern Verge X11. It can rocket up to 28mph easily on the flat.
What an amazing video you just put me up on game.

Does the bike frame creak when u got over a small pothole accidentally? This suggests the foldable frame is not rigid enough.

Been looking for an SL model for a while now. How much did you get it for if you don't mind me asking?
I paid $250 from the previous owner but I know I was lucky
Wow what a bargain. My Tern Verge x11 2021 cost me £2,600.
Bikes after COVID is expensive :( but as long as you enjoy riding it for as much as you can, your spending is justified :)
The Tern Verge X11 is a masterpiece. The best folder ever made PERIOD. Looks amazing. And roadies ask me how is that bike so fast.
How much would you pay for this in 2022? I have seen once advertised locally.
Personally, less than 400-500 would be a great deal, but if it’s hard to find and in great condition probably $800 or more.
I have one for 700$
awesome 😜
Don’t like the cables sticking out when folded. Prefer the internal fold handlebars models
internal folding adds more friction. Direct external cabling is best for braking feel. I've ridden over 1000 miles and those cables were never needing replacement.
I’m trying to lock in a deal for 700$ ..
Good luck!
