Nice home!!! Love smart automations, and started with google home too! Moved on to home assistant though now, its so much more powerful, but basically a rabbit hole 😅 Suggestions for more automations: - presence sensors for each room! (Not motion, they turn off if you're sitting) So control lights, fans, etc etc - door / window sensors if you see a need, so pantry open, lights go on kinda thing - and automate your lights to dim when you turn on your TV, and brighten a bit when you pause, and go back to dim when you resume... It's basically magic! My husband just loves that automation 😂 - Automate the bathroom exhaust when someone showers!
The bit about the windows is SO GOOD for anyone wanting new construction. My Husband and I got shades for our new build and the company that came out to measure told us they had to measure each window separately because of those tiny variances. I think it’s common in the building/construction industry. But we wouldn’t have known if they didn’t tell us. Don’t think you measured wrong or anything was wrong with the shades!
TP-Link Smart switches for outdoor porch lights. Auto on/off by sunrise/set. TP-Link Motion Smart switches for certain rooms, I got one for my basement as I pass down the stairs lights turn on like magic. Both work great with Google Home. But even it's "Kasa" app sometimes seems faster. Either way it's good. Govee Outdoor LEDs for fences or walk ways. Halloween, Christmas related lights connected to a smart outdoor plug, set on an automation 👌🏼 Loved your honest review of those smart shades.
Hi Kayla. I just want you to know, I literally am into all the things you do. 😂 Your garage tool collection is goals. I explained to my mom in excitement about you, like I had just tasted some good sweet tea. Keep doing what you’re doing because when I get my house, the way I’m going to reference your videos!!!
I love the synchronization of when it’s that time of day and every starts to open or shutdown it’s amazing I will add this to my house non-negotiables list 😂 thank you Kayla for the inspiration
Kayla, for your outdoor lights you should buy dusk to dawn lightbulbs! Even to tide you over until you get a smart switch. Dusk to dawn bulbs will solve your problem and is such a cheap change.
we have multiple different lights (regular and led) hooked up to the same light switch. so even if I changed the bulbs on the sconces, that wouldn’t solve my problem for the up lights. a smart switch set to a dusk/dawn schedule will control everything.
I agree with dusk to dawn lights. I previously just had a smart bulbs but the automation didn't work well. Now my dusk to dawn lights work well with the smart bulbs (they don't lose power). And I have the lights change colors for holidays...right now they're red, white and blue!
FYI, no window casings are 100% square and wood has movement, so you can expect variations in through bowing and cupping that will be revealed most along the longer span in the frame. You should typically reduce your dimension by 1/8" to 1/4" depending on the window shade company you are purchasing from. Some manufacturers want exact measurements and they make the reduction outlining the tolerance. Others provide exactly why you specify, so you've got to do your research. The outcome looks great though! Keep up the great work. Love your videos and design style.
There's even cheaper ways to automate your home using some single board computers like RaspberryPi, but there is somewhat of a learning curve (for some non-DIYers). Plus you get the added security of not having things under a Google account
We had a robot vacuum, don't remember the brand, was a cheaper one that did great for a while. It would always show in Google home to be running when it was clearly docked and never wanted to follow instructions from Google but worked fine from it's own app.
Hi Kayla, I'm a new fan and I've enjoyed your content so far. This is the first video that popped in my suggestions because I'm constantly looking at different smart home products. I've been working on my smart home for a few years now. So far I have smart curtains, ceiling fans, lights, vacuums, cameras and appliances. Right now I'm researching the right motion sensors to make my lights run more seamless. There is a lot of trial and error sometimes. Keep at it girl!
Amazing Smart House/Home so far. It’s goals. Guess we’re around the same age cuz I remember the Smart House movie too and it’s the reason that I’m trying to turn my home into a replica of the movie lol. But not only is your house beautiful, it’s well decorated and your smart home modifications are being done by u which is very attractive and cost effective. Great job Kayla!!💯✊🏿
I admire your patience and installation skills. Also thanks for confirming why I chose Serena Shades by Lutron 😂 They cost more but work perfectly every time in my smart home scenes and automations.
I plan on getting smart shades also. I want to have everything automated so far I have just my tv, lights, & saltwater fish aquarium... I love govee, all my light stripes are from govee
As someone with a smart house that I created and customised I will say this always always set up your smart products before installation, probably the only reason I can think of for why there are So many different ways to install is because technology is constantly being updated including smart devices and that explains the customer service and you tube and the Manual not matching up .
I built my smart home from the ground up , new construction , but with Alexia and I too had so many issues, my smallest window is 8ft and largest 12 ft, I had to get custom blinds/shades built, I wish mines was 3k, I have 52 windows in my home with frames less doors to the back pool area, I'm still fighting with this dam house, allot of my stuff drops off from the Alexia app, then appear a few days later as a new equipment eg switch 1 found, I'm not sure if Alexia can only handle soo much of devices all together, I have set them up in different groups so it can be more organize , so I feel your pain, good luck on your conversion
I believe Google is having issues because I have smart lights in our primary bedroom that disconnect from Google Home or don't label the correct action (light on when it's clearly off or vice versa) in the Google Home app. When I use the local app, the lights work perfectly fine. First time seeing your channel, love the content.
Also you said if we wanted to suggest somethings lyk in the comments….Lutron Caseta!! I have em, did my research and we seem to kinda think alike when it comes to things like this so I would recommend Caseta smart switches. You’ll like em. I hope I’m not suggesting this too prematurely cuz I’m only 14mins in but everything looks soooooooo amazing so far!! 💯🤙🏿✊🏿
Techie here! I can tell you to check and if you answers no then this will resolve your problem. It’s probably the Internet signal. If you only have one router essentially located in your home, the signal may not be getting far enough to all the shades, especially a different point of time because of wavelength yada yada yada. if you have a mess system, I would look at either repositioning your system or buying another pod to your system and then positioning pretty much all corners of your home has “equal” coverage. Items such as shades, doorbells, and other smaller devices other than cameras, meaning items that don’t require a lot of band with generally don’t have stronger wavelength if you can imagine just because of the size of circuits on these items, hence widening, your network, makes it stronger and better to connect items. Also, the more items you add to your network, you will have to look at your router and see if that’s even sufficient. That doesn’t sound like the case here and I’m only measuring that based on what I’m hearing in today’s video and measuring that on what I have on my home currently.
Algorithm put this video on my feed and clicked on it bc I want to turn my home into a smart home…I wasn’t expecting to laugh so much though. I fell out when she started talking about installing the shades 😂
She is correct on that figure out what ecosystem you want and then pick your items that is compatible with the ecosystem. I am an Apple user tried in true so I use Apple home. In that all of the products and stuff that I do use has to be compatible with Apple home and it has made insulation and converting our home into a smart home much easier.?

I’m sure there’s a more technical video on RUclips that can give you all the specs, that’s not my ministry lol. I hooked everything up to our normal WiFi and it works just fine. We have the highest speed plan our internet provider offers.
@@kaylasimonehome Sorry to bother you again, I just wanted to suggest an Asus wifi 6 router or something comparable. With so many wifi items, you're going to want more channels, and this may be why some items like the fans got confused or lost connection. There's also safety protections so that people cant connect to a baby monitor for example, or your smart items and listen in or snoop, as well as automations like when you're uploading a youtube video, the wifi prioritizes the PC upload and not the smart fans. Make sure all your items use Wifi 6 if you go 6, some might still use Wifi 5, in that case all wifi 5 is still OK. And I'm sure your new ISP gave you their most updated modem but that will help, if they have any better models or let you use 3rd party. You will also want maybe a security or fail safe options, so if someone cuts the power, or theres a storm, there's a generator that kicks on that powers the wifi only so you can call for help -- you can tell the police ahead of time you need to test this and will hang up immediately. You'll want an emergency option where only wifi/cams/google voice work to save energy. I would also program a vacation mode that shuts it all off, then you can monitor usage. I believe some smart meters have apps, or can connect to your electricity companies portal. I also saw your smart door is batteries, change those often, I think mine lasted 6 months. If you have items you dont want stolen in the back, some security systems spray water like a sprinkler when triggered at night. It has saved my husbands tools a few times. My other suggestions is automated dog water and food, roomba, wet roomba, heated toilet seat, smart bidet, smart power outlets labeled as the item they are like air purifier, dehumidifier ect. Thank you for reading and sharing. I'm in cyber security so I want to make sure everyones safe on smart items, because they're easy to break into. Good luck x edit: I just saw it took you 3 months to get the shades done, I would hire an IT guy or even a nerd from best guy geek squad to come do the router, it's going to upset some things. Part of the security or emergency reset mode you can program in is to make sure storms or outages dont mess it all up, I'd hate for your work to be lost
