Something the show doesn't convey, but the novels do. Lister was using his job on Red Dwarf as a free ride from the outer solar system back to Earth. By the start of the episode he is sick of the work, sick of bunking with Rimmer and comes up with a plan to get put in stasis by committing a petty crime just bad enough to qualify for punishment by stasis. He made sure the cat was healthy and vaccinated. He though he would be arrested quickly once the ships sensors detected a non-human lifeform. When nothing happened for a while, then Lister took the photograph and sent it in to be developed.
I think it´s funny when you see Cat (and the fact who his parents were and the history of cat species on RD as general), considering that Frankenstein had literaly the best pedigree Lister could find.
Red Dwarf is the name of the ship. A Red Dwarf is a type of star, like the sun. The ship is an old mining ship that mines for ore on the outer planets then ships the materials to Earth. The trip takes years. The main cast are two low level employees on the ship.
Yeah Red Dwarf not only transports mined minerals though... You see in the long shot in the intro that there seems to be a rocky protuberance on the bottom of the ship ?... well that is an actual asteroid that the ship is cannibalizing on it's journey between the outer planets (as alluded to in Lister's seemingly throwaway song at the beginning of the episode "Ganymede to Titan, you know I've been around." So.. the Red Dwarf is a mining ship that mines as it goes and it's so big that it also has manufacturing facilities on board to so that not only are mineral resources delivered to the moons of the outer solar system, but finished products as well to aid in the colonization of these minor worlds. I mean the guys, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor really put a lot of thought into the world building for this show's premise ! And that also answers one of the questions Megan had about where Cat got the material for his suit... Red Dwarf, being a truly colossal ship has vast stores of goods manufactured from each moon to deliver to the next AND it has facilities to manufacture goods from the materials it is constantly mining during it's journey for the years long trip it cycles through the solar system.
@@paulwalsh2344 I'd never thought of taking a whole asteroid and mining directly from it in transit. It makes much more sense owing to the flight time.
It starts out as "The Odd Couple, but in space" and gradually morphs, over the seasons, into "Star Trek, but ridiculous." [In fact there's even some tropes and conceits people think of as "star trek" ideas or whatever that actually come from Red Dwarf first, that's how old, and how good, this is.] It's clever and unique high-concept science fiction can measure up to any serious sci-fi drama, especially for its time. It's character comedy is funnier than most sitcoms. At it's high points, Red Dwarf is clicking on both fronts and there's just nothing else like it. Keep up with this one.
He was also the cop in The Fifth Element who ordered a McDonalds, then while chasing Bruce Willis, crashed into a McDonalds truck. I think it must have been an intentional pun on his name.
I remember seeing the trailer for this and being - as a sci-fi nerd - kind of intrigued. So I was glad to get into it from the start. It's a real slow build, like a lot of British sitcoms now considered classics. And of course there are a lot of British sitcoms that are basically about the interaction between two people (usually, but not always guys). These early episodes also have a flavour of 'Porridge', what with their enforced imprisonment together on the ship. And a Red Dwarf is a real thing, sort of. A small red sun, low on energy.
Cannot wait for he changing the light bulb gag, I will leave it at that, it does often get brought up in some top British comedy moments. You picked a good one, I lived off programmes like this in my childhood/teens.

Big fan here. Welcome to the Drawf club. This show just gets better and better the longer it runs. Each episode is different. Don't try to work things out just enjoy the show.
Back in the 90s this would be on the PBS marathon fundraising drive days. Me and my HS friends would get together and have marathon parties. If I recall, Season 1 was quite different than the future seasons.
WoohOO!! Red Dwarf! It's so cool seeing people watch this episode totally blind, as hardly anyone caught it in the UK, so everyone saw it spoiled. Even with the internet, hardly anyone does reaction videos about it, so this is only the second good reaction video I've seen of it... and it was a joy! Thanks. I'm looking forward to more. It's not a series which sits still and I can't wait to see what you think of the revelations and plot twists to come!
A red dwarf is also a kind of star, we learnt that in school, didn't we? They are very common. Fifty of our sixty nearest stars are red dwarfs. You can't see any of them in the sky though, as they are not bright enough.
I have been following your channel for long time but I have never left a comment until now. I hope you keep watching Red Dwarf. Each series gets better and better. The 4th series and 6th series is my all time favs. Script writing is amazing. Love your reactions.
Moreover, Whilst it's called Red Dwarf based on the name of the ship, Red Dwarf is called Red Dwarf because of the type of star, the smallest type of star and the most common type of star in the Milky Way
This is one of the best british comedies and one of my favourites, as stated it does get better so i hope you stick with it and enjoy the journey. As stated series 2 is where it really starts to pick up 😊
Actually, while I agree series 2 is when it picks up, I'd say the very next episode in this series 'Future Echoes', is up there with the best there is. The others aren't bad, either. Just saying in case Megan is worried there will be a slog before she reaches the good stuff. It's just a case of things improving... FE being the exception as that episode has it all pretty much!
Only fools, BlackAdder, Young Ones, Bottom, Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Some mothers do Ave em, Comic Strip, In Sickness and in Health, Father Ted and Spaced. Possibly the best sitcoms from the plethora of great British sitcoms. Edit, I've just seen your playlists and you're covering a lot of these. Deffo don't miss out on Ade Edmondson and Rik Mayal, watch Bottom and the Young ones, only 5 seasons in total. absolutely amazing stuff. Spaced has a young Simon Pegg from the late 90s also.
This was the first, and perhaps only, sci-fi production set in space where the premise was that space travel would be boring - more like being on an oil rig than people meeting aliens every week and having laser blaster fights.
This is the very first episode. Ironically Titled The End. Mark Williams from The Fast Show (plays Father Brown in the Series of the Title Character). I want to return after I've died. To watch my funeral
Lister's idyllic, rural dream life involves breeding horses. He aspires also to keep a sheep and a cow. He just put these details in a rather confusing order. 🤣 🐏 🐮 🐎 🐎
Oh YES!…PLEASE Do some more🤗. how I miss this show!! It is VERY British though and a bit old so…😏 You’re forgiven if this one episode is all you can take 🥰.
The first 2 series are a little (and occasionally a lot) rough around the edges, but when you hit 3 (and I thoroughly recommend it) it really picks up. As a life long fan (yes, I remember the original transmission, I AM that old) I enjoy watching people experiencing anything I've loved for their first time, as I can never get that back. (Be it TV, film, books, etc) 😁
The first season is a bit claustrophobic, but the basic premise is funny. Its sort of "Odd Couple" but instead of sharing an apartment, theyre stuck in a spaceship 😂😂 Once it started to become successful, they increased the cast and got more adventurous with the storylines and it became a classic comedy show
Love Red Dwarf, I remember a Red Dwarf celebration type show with a selection of interviews with various notaries including Sir Patrick Stewart who said how Red Dwarf was showing as he was making Star Trek TNG, but before it was released, and he was about to call his agent thinking it was a rip off series, until he started laughing and realised it was a parody of Sci-Fi space shows which take themselves too seriously.😋 If you get the chance read the books, it becomes clear just how well Red Dwarf is written and avoids the barrier of dated production values. Hilarious.
Great series there are 13 seasons Red dwarf 1 Red dwarf 2 Red dwarf 3 Red dwarf 4 Red dwarf 5 Red dwarf 6 Red dwarf 7 Red dwarf 7 Red dwarf 9- back to earth Red dwarf 10 Red dwarf 11 Red dwarf 12 Red dwarf 13 - the promised land
My favourite series of all time, never mind sitcom, or British. Honestly your fans picked well. It crowd is great, but even bad red dwarf is good, it gets better every season n for most people peaks at series 5 or 6 (5 for me) Love watching these reactions as I've watched them all so many times it's good to get a fresh take. Series 1 and 2 aren't as entertaining as later episodes on a rewatch.
Let me be the 221st to inform you; a red dwarf (in context of astronomy) is a class of star characterized by its hue and its dimness relative to other stars. I believe the showrunners' joke is that these particular lovable, sad-act shipmates make life for one another less than stellar.
Even though it may not seem like it from the first episode, Red Dwarf is a great series. Twelve series (seasons) and a movie, starting in 1988 to 2020, I got hooked on it when it aired on my local PBS station in the early 90's. It pays around with many sci-fi tropes. One of the many that they tried to make an American version of but it never got past the pilot stage.
I am a huge fan of Red Dwarf, as with Rising Damp though, the first episode isn't the best in my opinion but they get way way better! Actually the guy who plays Philip in Rising Damp makes an appearance in one of the later series of Red Dwarf!
@@paulwalsh2344 Fun fact: one of _Red Dwarf_ 's shuttles is named _Blue Midget_ (or maybe fleet of shuttles; I'm not sure, since we're only shown one of the type, but the mother ship is so massive, it very likely has an extensive fleet of them). It's easy to miss the name on-screen, and it's not even always legible in glorious composite video, but it's there. In any case, _Blue Midget_ has a size more appropriate to its name.

Correcting herself from not knowing... to technically be correct yet still not getting it.. But I think my mirth is overtaken by what of an indictment the entire thing is when it comes to the school system that she isn't aware that a "Red dwarf" is the name of a specific type of sun... (or was it a "stage" of a specific type of sun's "life"? My memory isn't what it used to be).. Don't they have physics classes where she lives?
Red dwarfs are stars with very low mass and very low luminosity, as compared to the Sun. They make up 70% of all stars and their lifespans range from one to ten trillion years.
name is the ships, but i always thought it was a play or based on actual space events, like the white dwarf, which is either the prelude or after effect of a black hole
In the book, George commited suicide to avoid his debt to the mafia on Ganymede. They also skipped Holly telling Lister that, after three million years, he's probably the last and only human being in the universe. Holly brings Rimmer back as a hologram so Lister won't go batshiz crazy. Needless to say, the comedy is a little bit darker in written form.

Also I'm pretty sure what I described about the Red Dwarf's mission was detail in one of the first two Red Dwarf novels which I read. though I can't go and prove it right now because I lost the books decades ago.
Also, in the commentary from some of the early series, Chris Barrie indicates to Norm Lovett the asteroid integrated under the ship as does Robert LLewellyn later in a Kryten series.
The ship is named after a type of star. There are various types: white dwarf, red dwarf, red giant, etc.
You know what they say about working with children and animals; the spill was just a thing that happened on the best take of that scene.
A show fondly remembered by the UK black community as half of the stars were black but weren’t written to be black unlike a lot of shows of the era.
Weren't written to be black? When one of the characters rips off James Brown?
Out of all reactions I've watched about this comedy I'm so glad someone actually recognised Arthur weasely being Peterson in this 😊
Yes, Red Dwarf is apparently also the name of a type of star which was the inspiration for the show's title!
Red Dwarf's are also small coolest stars.
Big fan here. Welcome to the Drawf club. This show just gets better and better the longer it runs. Each episode is different. Don't try to work things out just enjoy the show.
Gotta love red dwarf watched them many times I still love them
The show is named after the ship and the ship is named after a type of star.
I gathered it was named after the ship! I didn't know about the start, though. Thanks! :)
It's also because it is red... And huge.
@@MeganRuthThe writers didn't intend the ship to literally be red. There was a miscommunication with the model builders and they ran with it.
@@djco5782understandable as the model makers had worked for Anderson where most craft were primary coloured.
Yes the ship is called Red Dwarf. But that's also a type of star.
Red Dwarf has a lot in common with the film Dark Star, which is an awesome film
I have been following your channel for long time but I have never left a comment until now. I hope you keep watching Red Dwarf. Each series gets better and better. The 4th series and 6th series is my all time favs. Script writing is amazing. Love your reactions.
Moreover, Whilst it's called Red Dwarf based on the name of the ship, Red Dwarf is called Red Dwarf because of the type of star, the smallest type of star and the most common type of star in the Milky Way
The cat is played by Danny John-Jules who went on to appear in "Death in Paradise" which is also worth a watch.
He’s also in Blade II
This is one of the best british comedies and one of my favourites, as stated it does get better so i hope you stick with it and enjoy the journey. As stated series 2 is where it really starts to pick up 😊
Yes I plan to stick with it! I'm looking forward to watching more :)
@mardroidmk1393 for sure it is no slog at all, and as you say future echoes is up there too
Only fools, BlackAdder, Young Ones, Bottom, Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Some mothers do Ave em, Comic Strip, In Sickness and in Health, Father Ted and Spaced.
Loved the interactions once Kryten arrived to round out the crew !
Spoiler
This was the first, and perhaps only, sci-fi production set in space where the premise was that space travel would be boring - more like being on an oil rig than people meeting aliens every week and having laser blaster fights.
I do so love this show...
I was fortunate to catch this in NZ when it screened as part of a fringe entertainment show. Right place, right time I guess.
I love the randomness of this.
Danny John-Jules the actor cat was one the Doo Wop singers in the little shop horrors
Red Dwarf is the ship, which is probably named after the Red Dwarf variant of star (because it's red 😁)
You are going to love this❤
us brits wre so lucky to have grown up with this show.
Oh Dear! what have you done!? Started watching Red Dwarf that's what. Have fun fun fun.
The first season is a bit claustrophobic, but the basic premise is funny. Its sort of "Odd Couple" but instead of sharing an apartment, theyre stuck in a spaceship 😂😂
Once it started to become successful, they increased the cast and got more adventurous with the storylines and it became a classic comedy show
Love Red Dwarf, I remember a Red Dwarf celebration type show with a selection of interviews with various notaries including Sir Patrick Stewart who said how Red Dwarf was showing as he was making Star Trek TNG, but before it was released, and he was about to call his agent thinking it was a rip off series, until he started laughing and realised it was a parody of Sci-Fi space shows which take themselves too seriously.😋
If you get the chance read the books, it becomes clear just how well Red Dwarf is written and avoids the barrier of dated production values. Hilarious.
Great series there are 13 seasons
Red dwarf 1
Red dwarf 2
Red dwarf 3
Red dwarf 4
Red dwarf 5
Red dwarf 6
Red dwarf 7
Red dwarf 7
Red dwarf 9- back to earth

Red dwarf 13 - the promised land
Great show. I hope you keep reacting to it.
Yeh welcome to the crew the only answers you can expect are to questions nobody asked and they'll be wrong anyway have fun.
Very funny stuff!
Indeed!
My favourite series of all time, never mind sitcom, or British.
Honestly your fans picked well. It crowd is great, but even bad red dwarf is good, it gets better every season n for most people peaks at series 5 or 6 (5 for me)
Love watching these reactions as I've watched them all so many times it's good to get a fresh take. Series 1 and 2 aren't as entertaining as later episodes on a rewatch.
"One living, breathing human being" technically yes lol
Alone in space, makes for a unique experience. Thank you for reaction 😊
Let me be the 221st to inform you; a red dwarf (in context of astronomy) is a class of star characterized by its hue and its dimness relative to other stars. I believe the showrunners' joke is that these particular lovable, sad-act shipmates make life for one another less than stellar.
A red dwarf is a type of star.
Others you will probably enjoy are 'The young ones' and 'Bottom' (especially the 4 live stage shows but the TV series as well)
really good show Red Dwarf l remember watching first time during final few episodes
I am a huge fan of Red Dwarf, as with Rising Damp though, the first episode isn't the best in my opinion but they get way way better! Actually the guy who plays Philip in Rising Damp makes an appearance in one of the later series of Red Dwarf!
Red dwarfs are the most common form of star in the universe - the ship was presumably named after them.
Plus it's an ironic name... even though Red Dwarf stars are the smallest type of actual star, the ship is really quite massive !
@@fllthdcrb Oh... then you haven't seen ALL Red Dwarf episodes then...
(...but I shouldn't sound so smug... I haven't seen the last series nor the "movie"...
@@paulwalsh2344 Well, I've seen... what was it... through series 8? Yeah, I guess I have a little catching up to do.
@@fllthdcrb Oh well then you've seen the Ep with Cat dancing in the Blue Midget bay ?...Admittedly that was a nanite reconstituted Red Dwarf...
I watched this now and realized I had seen it before. I don't know if I mentioned it but I found it to be snicker-worthy that she corrected herself from not knowing that this was set in space, and realized afterwards "Red Dwarf" was the name of the spaceship.
Red dwarf quality drops off as seasons progress, then they pick up again later.
IT is really really good/funny, don't sleep on it.
Red dwarfs are stars with very low mass and very low luminosity, as compared to the Sun. They make up 70% of all stars and their lifespans range from one to ten trillion years.
",,, its a chicken!" 😅😂
Welcome to 1 of the best tv shows EVER 😊
please carry on reacting to red dwaft dont stop
My favourite programme EVER! The first series is a slow burn though.
and a red dwarf is a type of star
name is the ships, but i always thought it was a play or based on actual space events, like the white dwarf, which is either the prelude or after effect of a black hole
