If you feel you TRULY need a truck gun I recommend you get either a pump or semi-auto shotgun. I also recommend you have whatever lock, safe, cable system that is secured to the frame of the vehicle. Why a shotgun? Slugs and 000 or 00 are very effective even against a bad guy wearing body armor. Shotguns overall tend to be cheap but quality and effective. The shotgun isn’t a as demonized by the public so when it’s time to explain things to anti-gun persons you may not be as persecuted. Also there’s an issue of potential rust. I kept a weapon in my trunk for a few weeks and it began to rust - trunk wasn’t ‘sealed’ like I thought. So if you don’t want to have to take it in and out on a regular basis and truly leave it until needed a shotgun can handle neglect a little better. My two cents - I’m super open to comments and other perspectives.
I would argue that a shot gun is worse. If we’re using the active shooter situation, it’s a good idea to have something more accurate than a shotgun. God forbid you miss a shot and now an innocent bystander identifies as Swiss cheese

Some states, your CCW permit only covers handguns and not rifles. Regardless with a permit, you are supposed to carry a rifle locked in a container, unloaded and ammo in separate locked container, preferably in the trunk. A loaded magazine inserted to a rifle is considered loaded in the eyes of the law regardless if the chamber is actually empty. If you are in these states, just because you have a CCW permit, don’t assume you can legally carry a rifle inside the passenger cabin of your vehicle.
