The good thing that I just realized, is that Patrick can and does, sing this lovely song, up until present day, with scenes for us to enjoy, through the years. And I take it, that this might be one of his special favorites. But not all musicians make up to date versions of their favored songs, like what Pat is doing here.
I just wanted to say, that this performance of Pat's reminds me of when guys would gather together at different people's homes, just to pick up their guitar and play, while we all sang along. I miss that. People have gone and got themselves in a big hurry lately, and seemed to let all the stresses of life get in the way. I guess if you want that now, you'd find it at most church home groups. They always start out the meeting with fellowship worship songs, and somebody always brings a guitar.
If you're not a guitarist you will never understand just how difficult it is to perform a song with this many years beyond its initial inception, solo! Fretting with older fingers, singing with an older voice, not touring like they used too (ie: practicing) and getting the mood and timing of the tune down years after that emotion is gone. Pat, this rendition is simply amazing! I never thought the Doobies got the recognition and acclaim they were due for all the great tunes and hard work they put into the music but brother, they would pack the venues with us fans! Good to see ya grew your hair out again! Peace, 👣
Pat and me shared the same small cafe in Soquel, California. It sat about 30 people! Nobody ever bothered him though we all knew who he was. NICE MAN... for a time Neil Young ate at the same place. Hell Doobies even kept their commitment to play a dance at my high school just after Listen to the Music climbed the charts. It is rather sad to read how many in the band are gone now :-(
I lived there then.... mid '76-mid '88... one of my favorite concerts ever they played Graham Hill Showgrounds - free !! stood close enough in back ,of Pat (to kiss his hair) in line at Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting co...but was afraid his gf would've kicked my ass.. Always loved that hair.. I was at a laundromat one day Neil Young came in..was pissed off about something...maybe he left his clothes overnight...lol Hate that I was too shy to talk to these guys🤭...never had another chance... But a friend and I Did ask to go backstage at the Catalyst to give Joe Cocker a hug !! So glad we did.... miss those Santa Cruz days......
Doobies are sounding as good if not better than ever including their, vocals. One of THE best bands EVER. Thank you DOOBIES. Your music is timeless, truly.
The Captain and Me is one of my all time favorites. I was in 9th grade when it came out. Still makes me feel emotional to hear songs from way back then!!
Yup, he's a genuine kinda guy. The band seems that way...just good folks that I'd like to have a beer with and just hang out with. Check out Dan Rather's interview with them if you get a minute.
Always one of my heartbreaking old songs. Love Patrick Simmons...He put the Doobie in the "Doobies"He's gotta be my all time crush, but it's way more respect for Pat and his music.
awesome. I'm telling you he and Johnston had some great chords for so many of their songs. Not at all your typical C, G, D stuff. It's great to try and learn them and play along. Thank you Pat.
I learned this as Pat plays it in open G and it's one of my favourite songs to perform. I also love the solo from the electric version. The Captain & Me is such a great album.❤
Such a class act is Pat Simmons! Great musician and even a better guy! Congrats to you on a fantastic career and tx for being a tremendous influence on so many musicians like myself! Blessings to you and your family!
This is my favorite Doobies masterpiece. We love you, Pat! This was an unforgettable performance. Going to get tickets for the Brothers tour this summer for sure.
One of my ALL-TIME favorite songs, I've never seen Pat perform this solo, so very nice. I tried to cover this, posted it on up on planet RUclips. Interesting in that I play it way different than the author of the song, , , gonna have to study up now!
WHERE HAS MUSIC LIKE THIS GONE!? THE GARBAGE BEING PUT OUT TODAY IS A SIGN OF THE TIMES. IN MY DAY, MUSIC CLASS WAS A MUST. NOW IT'S NOT EVEN OFFERED IN MOST SCHOOLS.
Saw PS once, trademark hair chopped short, at a remote dance studio in Mendo Co.... I kept looking at him thinking - gee I know that guy from somewhere....friend of a friend? Did we work together once? He was such a low-key genteel audience member; just there to support the kids. Thanks Doobie Bros. for some great American music.
Perfect performance ! Pat ... I love you forever.. I lived in Santa Cruz from '76 to '88. Spent my 20s there. Lotta changes in those years.. but saw you guys play the Graham Hill Showgrounds. Happy times... And once you were right in front of me in line at the Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Co. Really in love with your hair too. Was all I could do to keep from touching it. ..and mines still long too. ✌ South City .. was and still is you're best. Much Love !!
If I have such a thing as one favorite song, this is it. Pat has been a guitar/music hero of mine since the early/mid 70's when Captain and Me came out. Fast forward some 50 years later and I am just now learning to play it. It sort of got lost in the process of playing more widely popular rock based electric guitar songs off the album. My mistake (if you can call playing any of their songs a mistake) entirely. Too soon old, too late smart.
Absolutely love this. The main reason I watched it is because it was at NAMM. I've never been but I have a lot of musician friends who go every year. Thanks so much for recording this. ~Athena
Pat Simmons seems like the type of guy you could call at 3 in the morning, pouring rain, car broken down, no money; "hey Pat, can you give me a hand?" Pat would say, "no problem, dude - I'm on the way."
I'm a long time Doobies fan. Although I think they've never been to my country (Portugal) for a concert, I managed to see them live in concert, in London, a while ago. Besides being a great musician, Pat Simmons must be a great human being too. I love this man. This song is sublime. Please listen to the sax solo by M.Russo on the live Wolf Trap version. F#«%!!!

No 64 year-old man should still be able to play and sing like this. Congrats, Patrick. You're aging so much better than your many fans.
If you're not a guitarist you will never understand just how difficult it is to perform a song with this many years beyond its initial inception, solo!

It’s tough…tuning is not standard

miss those Santa Cruz days......
Thanks for sharing those great memories. Gives new meaning to their song, "Slack Key Soquel Rag."
A brilliant guitarist & songwriter...!
What would the Doobies be without Patrick Simmons. A favorite of mine from their beginnings...
Mine as well.
Almost 50 years since I bought "The Captain and Me".. lots of nostalgia etc but so great to see Pat still killing it !
Doobies are sounding as good if not better than ever including their, vocals. One of THE best bands EVER. Thank you DOOBIES. Your music is timeless, truly.
Music is as close as we can get to a Time Machine. WHAT a beautiful song, it doesn't get any better than this . LONG LIVE the 70's .
totally agree. I refer to my MP3 player as my time machine
Yes! that and the photos and articles I catch up on now... memories make this now boring (artistically and otherwise) life bearable...
One of the all time beautiful songs of the rock and roll era.
My favorite Doobie Brothers song. Beautiful guitar and vocals.
The Captain and Me is one of my all time favorites. I was in 9th grade when it came out. Still makes me feel emotional to hear songs from way back then!!
One of my favorite songs! So happy we had the Brothers in our lifetime!
Best version ever of this song!
Pat’s skill and artistry are unsurpassed.
Thank you, Pat!
Keep doing what you’re doing!
You know, Mr Simmons has the greatest, sincere smile of any entertainer. He must really love his profession.
It's like they say " If you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life " .
He is an amazing guitar player and singer, no attitude, no ego..all class !
Something in his eyes
@@raoulbataller5454 my mother would have said he has kind eyes , I tend to agree..
Yup, he's a genuine kinda guy. The band seems that way...just good folks that I'd like to have a beer with and just hang out with. Check out Dan Rather's interview with them if you get a minute.
Beautiful man, beautiful music, thank you Patrick for the memories!
Always one of my heartbreaking old songs. Love Patrick Simmons...He put the Doobie in the "Doobies"He's gotta be my all time crush, but it's way more respect for Pat and his music.
Oh yeah.. I missed my chance I could have touched his hair... I was horribly shy ...damn
I think this is one of the best at Simmons songs ever!
Such a privilege to see Pat perform this song. Always loved the Doobie Brothers. I grew-up on their music. One of my favorite songs too.
awesome. I'm telling you he and Johnston had some great chords for so many of their songs. Not at all your typical C, G, D stuff. It's great to try and learn them and play along. Thank you Pat.
Takes me back to such happy and sad times!
A lot of songs never get old. But this one is at the top of my list.
still gives me chills hearing this. What a wonderful song and genius guitar playing
Top notch performance. So many beautiful chords.
Awesome.
This song, since released, became and has remained a part of me. So grateful for it.
I learned this as Pat plays it in open G and it's one of my favourite songs to perform. I also love the solo from the electric version. The Captain & Me is such a great album.❤
Thanks @paulstubbs4487, I was hoping this info would be shared!
Such a class act is Pat Simmons! Great musician and even a better guy! Congrats to you on a fantastic career and tx for being a tremendous influence on so many musicians like myself! Blessings to you and your family!

The Doobs had nice hits but the materiel on the 1st 5 albums was great.
I always thought so too!
A most talented man. I must say if you like that song, listen to "Neals Fandango" and "Sweet Maxine"
As I said, what a beautiful soulful voice, thanks Pat and all.
One of my favorites songs of all time. “Black Water” and “Long Train Running” are as well.
Just incredible! All the players over the band's history are first class musicians. They are way too under appreciated. What a great performance.
Wow! What a performance! Wow!
Beautiful performance. Just love this song.
What a great version of this great song...so refreshing!
Loved it!!! Absolutely fantastic!!!
Thank you mr simmons and thank you camera person for capturing

Always brilliant ..... Listening on a Sunday afternoon and it was spectacular! Thank you Patrick
So very thankful my folks had me when they did. Got to hear and see the greatest music ever first time around.
WHERE HAS MUSIC LIKE THIS GONE!? THE GARBAGE BEING PUT OUT TODAY IS A SIGN OF THE TIMES. IN MY DAY, MUSIC CLASS WAS A MUST. NOW IT'S NOT EVEN OFFERED IN MOST SCHOOLS.
I played the hell out of two albums in 1973: Steely Dan's "Countdown To Ecstasy" and The Doobie Brothers "The Captain and Me." I wasn't wrong.
My band plays this one, One of the most beautiful songs the Brothers ever performed ,, love that Open G tuning Patrick !!
Inderdaad een heerlijk nummer om te spelen !
He doesnt seem to bein open G. Do you know how he is tuned...I see lessons in open g but he is playing it different.
mwestervelt f# is the answer
Proud to be a part of this generation.
Vintage Pat! Way to go!🤘🏻
Absolutely beautiful sounding guitar. Love it!!

Perfect performance ! Pat ... I love you forever.. I lived in Santa Cruz from '76 to '88. Spent my 20s there. Lotta changes in those years.. but saw you guys play the Graham Hill Showgrounds. My favorite Doobie Brothers song - a masterpiece !
Wow he still has it.

Outstanding!!
Sophistication and beauty. I’m amazed every time I hear it. Like drinking a fine bourbon very slow.
Wonderful Simply Wonderful Music 😃
Lord I love the Doobie Brothers!
This was rather satisfying to hear… even acoustically.
Great piece...TY and ☮️
This made me cry with emotion. X

thanks for posting, I'm learning this on guitar now that i've seen this video. Sounds soooo nice the way he does it solo
cheers

Pat Simmons é Top.....
This deserves a detailed, itemized list of all the bad, or even mediocre Doobie Brothers songs:
Did I miss anything?))
Grote klasse!!!Please come to Belgium!
Great.....
