Shane did it all to himself. OP is not to blame in any way. What's he supposed to do, just keep quiet and accept that his career might be dead because people think he effed up and almost cost the company millions? Sure, he got to keep his job, but something like that can and will follow him around forever unless he clears his name. No more promotions. No more bonuses and raises. He'll be the first one to go when the company is making cuts during a recession. When he applies for a new job word of mouth might beat him there and prevent him from getting hired.

For me, instead of immediately taking that recording and going to the higher ups, I would have told Shane that for the next couple years I want to hear nothing out of him except yes sir and no sir or I'll end up sending the recording to management. Pretty sure Shane would have done exactly as OP asked
I heard the story before. Afterwards, he had to end up in the hospital, where he died without health insurance, and his family had to pay for him.
