Elvis Presley was labelled "devil music" in 1954; and before that all music by black musicians was "devil music". In fact back in the 1920's, jazz was "devil music' (Until white guys started playing it and it could make record company assholes lots of that sweet sweet cash).
Amazing to think that this song was released 50 years ago. If your husband hasn't reacted to this yet, for the love of god make him. This is the very foundation of heavy metal.

Heavy metal it is the most misunderstood genre in music. Like Rap & Hip Hop, many on the outside looking in who haven’t taken the time to examine the meaning and poetry in the lyrics simply dismiss both genres as a juvenile, dangerous and not true art forms.
I am loving that people who have never listened to rock/metal are having an eye opened to how wonderful it is. Some of it is Satanic because those bands want to be, but the majority of it is not. I hate the stigma on this kind of music because people miss out of wonderful musicians, lyricist, singer, and performers. People want to stigmatize rock but hip hop can be Satanic. When those rappers rap about murder, doing drugs, promiscuity, lust for material things...those things are evil desires. But, people bump that crap like it's going out of style all the while calling rock/metal evil. Just saying. ROCK ON! I'm glad that you are having fun discovering new music. It's fun to watch you guys:0)
Very true about the generational differences. When many of us growing up then and hearing this song, we had to visualize the lyrics for ourselves. Great job and glad to hear some Sabbath.
Back in the day, it was popular to diss the military. It took the 1st Gulf War before the military men and women were respected again. No one ever told a Vietnam veteran, during that time, "thanks for your service". I can vouch for that personally. The FIRST TIME I ever heard it directed at me, was not long ago when I went to renew my Vietnam Veteran license plate. When the woman said it to me, I almost teared up.
Service? It has become fashionable to say "Thanks for your service," but that certainly misses the point of this song. I have known many Vietnam war veterans since the war, and the majority don't think they were serving anyone but the war industry, as is clear in Gen. Butler's book. It is sad you have no sympathy for the 2 million Vietnamese who lost their lives when THE US INVADED their country. It was a country of 8 million. How many Americans would that be in comparison? Today's Vietnamese are a peaceful, forgiving and friendly people. The war was a lesson in peace for them, not a burden, or a grudge to be avenged. They are peaceful while we are history's most warlike, violent military bully with the blood of millions on our hands thanks to supporting the largest, bloodiest war machine in human history. My friend John was a decorated vet with purple hearts and when someone tells him thanks, he says "your welcome for all the commies I killed for Christ."

Welcome to the metal community. We appreciate you giving it a chance. Metal can be a lot deeper than outsiders give it credit for. Now, on to the devil aspect that you mentioned. I believe metal only has the power you give it in terms of evil. If you're unstable and listen to it, then it can be evil or classified as devil music. Back in the 90's a band named Slayer was sued by the parents of a murdered 15 year old girl. She was raped and murdered by 3 boys as a sacrifice to satan.
