In 1985 I really disliked the song and its ubiquity on the radio and television- it went to number one. Almost forty years later and for some years now I think it is a work of genius primarily for its lyrics and focus on its essentially anti war message. Vietnam was only a decade ago in 1985 yet it was never referred to in school or wider society that I can remember. It is as if society just wanted to ignore it at least in the UK. Perhaps it also reflected the UK's insularity ( no change there post Brexit) and refusal to send troops to Vietnam at the behest of the Americans. In contrast people never stopped talking about World War Two with all the xenophobic anti German commentary that went with it. Paul Hardcastle hit a nerve with 19's contribution to understanding of the futility of war. In 2024 over 50,000 Russians have died in its war of aggression against Ukraine which is more than America lost in a decade in Vietnam.
