What bit are you using for those cuts? I cut on a CNC for a living and I don’t have any tear out like that. Are you using a compression bit?

LOL... that was a woooorrrrnnnn out router bit that needs to be retired. I bought a few bits on my dime for personal projects. This one is the communal shop MDF beater bit. -Ben

Great to see this. I incorporated a CNC gantry router mill into Basic Woodworking classes 20+ years ago and it was a lot less 'plug and play' back then. I've typically explained to people that the hardest thing about CNC is.......CAD. For some people the CAD and CAM is overwhelming and they never get to the CNC part. If you can learn some BASIC CAD and follow some simple tutorials, it's pretty straightforward most of the time. Once people exerience a small amount of success, just like you mention, they immediately start to see a large number of ways to do some mundane work for them. IGNORE haters FWW, there's absolutely room for this.

Use RO water (reverse osmosis) if your worried about the electronics. It does not conduct electricity. Yea clamps are a waste of time. Screwing material down is the best way to go. Love the cnc!

I see you as quite the asset to the Fine Woodworking “company” Ben. Good job explaining too.

Nive video. I would say 90% of the use for our cnc is making router templates or templates in general. We also have the same shark maching you have but with a steel rolling base, the laser attachment works very well.

Great vid, Ben. I'm very intimidated by the software side of CNC. I'd love to see a similar vid of, for example, start to finish drawing up those DC hose brackets and sending it to the CNC. Is it a bespoke 2D drafting program? Can you use SketchUp to draw it up?

Thanks Ben I have recently gotten interested in CNC machine for small projects, I have found that CAD and CAM are a bit more computer hardware reliant than the G code like you said. I just question if I would really use it because there a ton of them for sale on Market place with the usual description that it was used very little and lost interest.

Yes. I do my CAD in fusion 360 on a pretty modern computer. The CAM is mostly done on this beat up PC or if I'm home, on my son's PC.
