My mother-in-law was adopted by her stepfather (she lived with her mother and stepfather). Her father died before she was born. When this happened, it changed her last name. She needs to renew her drivers license, and the state now requires a document trail that connects the name in their birth certificate to her current name. The only document we don't have is her adoption document. She's been licensed in this state since 1963 and now they want to fight her on it.
She doesn't know when she was adopted, so likely between 1944-1951. (Her mother passed away years ago.) She lived in several locations in Wyoming, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia during that time. She said she called Georgia to check and was told they couldn't give it to her and she would also have to contact her mother and have her call. I think there was a miscommunication somewhere. We're not even sure if it's in Georgia (which is a closed adoption stated)
Anyway, this is a relatively new reason to need adoption records.

Its not "BIO" family - it is just plain FAMILY. They are my mother, my father, my family not my "birth " parents . My adopters were just that - ADOPTERS. Be careful how you throw terms around and be sensitive to adoptees.
