      I had an OLD Ex-mark walk behind, belt drive and the book said if I could walk it, the mower would cut it. I am an equipment operator and did my own driveway and the bank on it was so steep the dozer wouldn't walk it up and down. I had to work the slope on a 45 degree angle. After the grass came up the Ex-Mark cut it. Unbeatable equipment.

      Mine's a Cub Cadet 36". walk behind. Does a good job but I can get pretty close to everything with my 0-turn so we just use a little push mower & grass trimmers to finish. The big 36" is kind of heavy on the steep hills.

    • @hauk3839
      @hauk3839 8 лет назад

      my 36 handles hills pretty good even when little wet. well designed. 36 inch way to go because you can get into most back yards.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  8 лет назад

      Yes, I see a lot of people have to deal with the gates. The 36 makes perfect sense. We all have different makes & models depending on our location. Most buy what's closest to us so we can get service & parts fast. Two more weeks of mowing for me in Vermont. Have a great day John!

    It's hard to tell how steep that actually is from the video; it's like there's a bit of a fish eye effect from the camera. Can't say I'm all that fond of mowing across some hills, anyhow. I used to work a ranch that had two hillsides that made me cringe--one around a pond above the entry drive that was probably about a 35 or 40 degree incline (and a good 100 to 150 feet from bottom to top) and another not so steep on the back side of the ranch house where the lawn dropped away to a sheer ledge that fell into a creek. I got used to not losing control of the mower going across the hills, just had to ease it along and keep the nose uphill, but early on I had a few moments where I just went "JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL" and let it go where it wanted on the first hill (caught it at the bottom and carried on). The other hill was cringe worthy, and I did lose control once when it was a little wet; I had to save that one from a watery grave by intentionally running it into a tree on the way down. There is nothing quite as frightening as nearly running a $15,000 John Deere that you don't own off a ledge and into a creek.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  7 лет назад

      You know it Andrew. Once you loose it, you're in for a ride, usually all the way to the bottom. Almost every year someone looses their life on one of these 0-turns around here. I've done much steeper & larger hills then this little one here. I've ended up at the bottom several times. I lost it once mowing down a steep hill on a tractor, picking up speed as I went down the hill towards the tree line. I leaned as much as I could & was ready to bail, when she started to turn a bit & stayed just on the edge of the woods all the way down. Lucked out. I wouldn't want to crash someone's $15,000 rig either! Stay safe bud!!

    How steep is that slope? looks pretty steep but hard to tell from video. I'm looking into getting a zero turn but have a 15-17 degree slope that I'm wondering if I would be able to cut with a zero turn.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  6 лет назад

      I don't know exactly what the pitch is, but this 0-turn stays put pretty good. I've got steeper ones that I mow. I've slid down the banks more then a dozen times probably.

    • @jestillwell1964

      Just saw this video. I have a 30-35 degree slope I mow sideways. The ROPS bar is up for that. Less than 30 it does not go up. There is one area that is 40-45 and it is only mowed up and down without the ROPS.

      @@popup1959 thanks for the reply
      I messaged briggs&stratton who makes the motors for TORO (the main mower you can buy here in Australia), and they said the engines can't operate beyond 15deg. My local dealer also said the same thing.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  5 лет назад

      Yes. I have a Kawasaki engine in this mower. It has an oil pump. Before that, I had a Koeler engine in my last one. That one also had an oil pump. Mostly all steep mowing here. We use Briggs and Stratton on the push mowers. They last a long time. Toro is a good machine.

    • @zacjohnson8404
      @zacjohnson8404 5 лет назад

      @@popup1959 so the briggs engines aren't too good for slopes but kohler and kawasaki are. Good to know. I think TORO is overpriced here in Aus. We can get a cub cadet for about the same price as the lowest end toro zero turn but the cub has a kohler engine. That's the one I'm thinking about now.

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  5 лет назад

      Ya, you'll want one that has an oil pump if you're mowing steep grades. Cub Cadet is a good machine. I've owned a three. Best of luck to ya Zac.

    U blasted the house with grass. A EZ chute works great for stuff like this... Numerous times the grass was blowing towards the house. Ended up looking nice. Good job hills suck

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  2 года назад

      I did that time. I blew it off with the blower after as well as the patio areas, etc. The guy where I bought the 0-turn told me, the 1st thing you'll want to do is take that chute off. I mowed a couple lawns and took it off. It just gets in the way and leaves clumps of grass everywhere. You have to use a lot more caution if you take the chute off for sure. Thanks, we do a lot of steep hills here in Vermont.

      If you've got a push mower you can use & a weed whacker, you're on your way. Scout out your houses that are close enough for you to mow & leave an estimate at those houses for your mowing. If you get even 1 house, do the best job you can and never miss a day. Others will see your hard work & maybe they will call you to do theirs. Best of luck to you!

    Must've blinked and missed where maximum pitch exceeded ...hard really to see how steep things are on video ....video has no depth like in person so is very difficult to appreciate actual angles ....maybe next time you can actually roll the thing live on video ....would be more instructive? Hope if you do you don't get hurt though! I'm only watching videos on slope mowing trying to figure out what might work for my situation! I have 4 acres rocky landscape with some pretty steep slopes here and there!

    • @popup1959
      @popup1959  7 лет назад

      I've mowed a lot steeper grades. Never a good idea to get on the side slopes with any machine let alone on a 0-turn. It is hard to see really how steep it is. I'll see if I can get the camera set up on the level. I think that would show the grade better. You have a lot to mow. This mower stays put pretty good. Good to take your time & look around.
