  • The temperature dropped to -13 degrees F. overnight while we struggled to keep the cabin above freezing temperatures. We were surprisingly warm in our comfy cozy bed but there wasn't much sleep through the night.
I camp and hike in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I’m also building and enjoying an off- grid cabin in the woods with my partner Cory and the kiddos Nora and Ethan! This vlog-style video brings you with me. I also guide Boundary Waters Retreats! In the Superior National Forest, in Northern Minnesota. And anywhere else I can venture to! I love sharing the journey with you all.

Reminds me of my first year off ge grid solo with 12 sled dogs. Ran out of wood my first winter had to snowshoe into the swamp and cut dead standing black ash every day for a month. Still off the grid 11 years later with 70 sled dogs, solo.

That is incredible. Luckily we have had enough wood for the time we are able to be at the cabin this winter. We will have a ton of spring cleanup this year though after the winter storm that came through and destroyed so many trees especially the ones near our trail.

What a great video as always. The hike into the cabin was absolutely beautiful. Cabin looked amazing from a distance. You guys have done a great job on it. I know the hike in was ruff but I could see the joy and relief of each of your faces. The two of you have a special connection. Always helping each other and laughing and loving each other. That is rare to find especially when working on a big project like this. So Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work! Stay safe out there and can't wait for the next video!

Hey guys, Awesome...if you have a kyack, you can load hundreds of pounds and it pulls easily through the snow. You should turn your firewood shack into a greenhouse roof, so you solar cook the wood dry, also build a large wood rack near the stove, to dry the wood further and less trips outside. 25 years off grid in the Adirondack mts... Have Fun

A tip about the wood stove- u may know already but when you start your fire inside the stove make sure you leave the bottom of the stove (the vent) kinda open until you see the fire stronger and more if the wood inside the stove ambering...and den u can close the vent that's at the bottom of your stove.

If your winter boots are rubber, a tip I learned while working way up in northern BC is wear a nice pair of bama socks, they will help keep your feet dry and warm.
You’ll have to wear thinner socks since you need space space around your feet but trust me. No space around your feet means no warm air to help keep your feet warm.
I wore cotton socks and bama socks while wearing Baffin rubber steel toe boots and my feet stayed warm and dry in -40°c (-40°f)
Baffin boots are great, but I found just wearing socks would lead to my feet getting cold.

Try rocsol fore Isolation it does better with moisture than fiberglass, Try a role of plastic vapor barrier. Use wood paneling instead of drywall the drywall will hold heat and moisture and its not good fore use in a structure that''s not heated all the time. Isolate the floor from underneath but use a wire mesh to stop wildlife getting into it. :)
I looks like a great getaway spot. Thanks fore sharing.

Just an FYI for you..with the size of that woodstove you guys should have been roasted out of that place if properly operated. When you get a fire going you need to fill the stove up not just a few pieces at a time. Your heat comes from coals and the more coals you have the more heat you get and for longer periods of time. Also use good dry hardwood for best performance. Lately every channel I have watched with people using woodstoves are using them incorrectly and complaining they got cold. There is no way even with little insulation that you guys should have been cold after a few hours of burning. Take the time to watch a few tutorials and read some information on the proper way to use and you will be much more comfortable in the future. Love the cabin in the woods as I too retreat to the wilderness to use my off grid cabin and I am sure you will make many memmories there in the furute!

It will be a ton of work, but yes. The trail is actually wide enough for a large truck but our winter ice/snow storm recently brought down many trees that either snapped or just got stuck bent over. We are trying to save the bent trees and see what needs to be trimmed in Spring. We don't plow the path in the winter and would maybe use a snowmobile if it weren't for the unusual trial conditions this winter. Spring trimming and trail cleanup will be super busy!

Yes! We will likely have a trail clearing day in spring. Maybe some of the bent over trees will stand back up, but as of now it does not look like it. The snow if off of most of the trees and they are still bent in half.
Yes we thought the windows would be worth the extra heat :) Once our cabin is insulated, we should be able to heat much much much more efficiently and I can't wait!

question, once the fires is going why not use a whole round it burns longer and keeps things warmer longer. This question comes after using firewood to heat my home for 15 years.

How would you ever get out in an emergency ? It is beautiful but looks scary too.

Definitely would be a challenge. We love the outdoors and respect the potential danger. To us, it is worth it. Doing things like this gives me life. ❤️

I noticed that your sled rope was too short for him to be pulling. Might be why it kept flipping over?

Yeah our sled setup was horrible overall. We learned our lesson. We didn’t think the path was going to be covered with branches and stuff so mostly the path would have been straight. But we had to zigzag around branches and limbs so it was rough. We even own a nice wide sled with a nice rope….. but thought it wasn’t worth the hassle. Thanks for the comments and the thoughts!
