    Really a very wise conception !!! But it can be improved in several ways.
    For example adding cardboard or paperboard inside the black bottle ( up to the end of it ); the cardboard will increase substantially the vaporization surface and that will produce more vapor.
    Also the transparent bottle can be isolated from the sun heat; that will lower it´s temperature and thus increase condensation.
    Thanks for sharing !!!

    Depending on your water source, some volatile liquids will also evaporate and condense with the water, so ideally you need to throw out the first inch or so, then put the cap back on to get the rest. And obviously, be careful not to slosh the dirty water over to the clean water side.

    LOVE the creativity!!! Thanks for sharing! The problem I see is that the bottles are plastic and is not healthy when they get hot. Would be wonderful if it was glass.

    Put a mylar reflective film behind this in the sun (or near a campfire) and you will have stupendous results. Or have the same device in a metal solar oven (or a cat hole mylar film solar oven) and you'will also have greater results. Pack this in your ruck for bug outs and it will come in very handy.

      Yes even I was thinking along the same lines. The first bottle should be a blackbody which could absorb more heat and then place some mirrors to improve efficiency of the apparatus/equipment and also trap the heat entering the 1st bottle.

    Really love your projects Thomas!! In order to increase the yield of distilled water, wouldn't it be better to have a flat(to increase the surface exposed to sun and the surface area of water) rather than vertical set up? Just my thoughts, anyway I LOVE THIS PROJECT!! Please do a LARGER version of this in the future I beg you!! :D

    • @tylerhutchinson1469

      They did it this way to collect more usable water without the system back flowing into the original tube. If you point 2 bottles at each other the collector will flow back after a period of time due to the angle needed to prevent contaminated water from flowing into the collection tube. This process allows more water to be processed at once, and allows for the person to not be constantly monitoring the device.

  • @zigaudrey

    As the water is a transformable material since he can be vaporized by water,it is logical to let him under light.
    I guess you painted the bottle in black since it absord more light rather than white color?
    I suggest you to add a interruptor-like object to get water,if you turn it.You know what i mean?I have no idea how it is called.
    The process to distill is long,I understand with that.Patient is essence.

    I get the concept of it, but just don't understand how the evaporated water would move up into the other bottle. Does the evaporated water condense in the transparent tubes that connect the two larger bottles and just fall into the clear bottle to drink? Why doesn't the evaporated water move to the top of the black bottle and then just fall back down again?

    • @tylerhutchinson1469
      @tylerhutchinson1469 5 лет назад

      I actually would do the process twice to be sure it is, unless boiling, which actually pertains to killing off the contaminated as well. While this process is similar, the temps used for condensation are much lower than actual the actual boiling point, or else we would be living on a very VERY hot planet that we wouldn't be able to go outside as all water would be boiling, including what's in out body. If you do this process and fear contamination, I suggest more than 1 day worth of distilling to reach your desired outcome.

      Probably should use fire to distill a lot of water instead of the head of the sun, but if you have a lot of these things that make small amounts of water, that will make a lot of water.

    • @josephellsworth4537
      @josephellsworth4537 6 лет назад

      It is a function of physics. You need approximately 2.36Kwh of heat to evaporate 1 gallon of pure water or a little more depending on impurities. You can expect to receive 0.8 to 1.1Kwh of solar heat per sq meter per hour during 6 to 7 hours of peak summer solar exposure. This works out to roughly 4.8Kwh per very sunny day per square meter. A well aimed solar collector will collect heat at about 60% efficiency or 4.8Kwh * 0.6 = 2.88Kwh of heat per sq meter of system. This would imply that you could produce 2.88 / 2.36 = 1.22 gallons of water per square meter of solar collector. You must also account for thermal losses through parts of the system that are not condensing. In a system like this thermal losses will average about 55%. This would reduce production to about 0.67 gallons per square meter of solar thermal collector per sunny summer day. The assumptions for efficiency, aiming and thermal losses can change the answer but the general formula will remain true.
