Actually, the first english dub of 'Gatchaman' was 'Battle Of The Planets' from 1978 by Sandy Frank for US syndication. Then, Ted Turner, and Fred Ladd created another english dub called 'G-Force', which would air briefly on WTBS in 1986, but Cartoon Network would air the full series in the mid 90's.

@@kevinputry5655 That is true, and while it was cancelled, it was possibly for the best, as the final episodes would not be able to to be edited to be kid-friendly as all three Gatchaman series were known to get real dark near the end.

This! I was about to point it out too, but I'm glad scrolled the comments. I remember catching G-Force as a kid on some random cable channel before, then later again watching the series on Cartoon Network. Interestingly, my mother's ex-boyfriend was shocked to see it, since he grew up knowing it as 'Battle of the Planets'.

I loved that show. In Latin America the first I remember was a version called "G-Force Guardians of Space", which was a lighter edition of the original Gatchaman. It always mistified me why a few years later they changed the name to "Eagle Riders". Now I know why.

When I was a kid, it was G-force. But I was confused at first cause battle of the planets was a name I was aware of and I knew it was somehow related to G force.
To add to the confuse, there's an unrelated show about planets literally fighting.

To me, the most interesting unmade American Gatchaman project was a feature length animated movie that was to be written by Paul Dini and made by defunct studio Imagi. They only ever managed to get TMNT 07 and Astroboy off the ground. The fact the former was close to, but never got a sequel and the latter was a troubled production that took years and the bankruptcy of the studio to get released. I don't know if the teaser still exists online, but I was devastated it never happened at the time. That said, this one... if I didn't know it was supposed to be Gatchaman, it sounds solid. But since it is, I take issue with the villains being slimy little monsters instead of Gatchaman's standard villain. That would have worked far better in live action and have been cheaper just to have mild costuming.

    • @pablocasas5906

There was also a cancelled Gatchaman anime from the late 90s. While the Gatchaman and Casshern OVAs did relatively well Tatsunoko made a Mach GoGoGo/Speed Racer show around '97 which was a failure, perhaps in part due to Speed Racer not being that popular in Japan despite the huge impact it had outside of its country of origin, but the failure of Speed Racer '97 killed the chances of a modern Gatchaman version and the only thing that survived from that project is some concept art made by an Italian artist who works in Japan, Roberto Ferrari, who later joined Square-Enix and re-designed the characters for the Final Fantasy VII Remake
There was a new Gatchaman anime back in 2013 called Gatchaman Crowds, but it had very little to do with the original anime, aside from the fact that Ken the Eagle´s original VA, Katsuji Mori, had a role in it

That’s what I find hilarious about this pitch. It’s basically Power Rangers once it becomes live action, and that’s probably what killed it in the end. What’s the point of doing something so immensely similar to what’s cheaply already been done?
Makes me wonder if this was possibly going to be done instead of Turbo or even In Space before scrapping it altogether. As a way to make something that doesn’t rely on Toei but is similar enough to draw in viewers who liked Power Rangers.

Well. This is astonishing. Terrible but interesting. I think you could almost shoehorn this onto Jetman footage. Almost.
It’s a shame the concept art and protos pics are missing. I wonder if they got misfiled, or there was a second pass on this concept under a completely different name that has that stuff. But of course the constant dilemma, how do you even start a search if you have no clue of a name, a timeframe or even possibly a different production company?
But keep on digging! I’d like to know where Toei hid that English language pilot/promo Queen of a Thousand Years. Did they only do the first episode or did they jam two eps together like the Ziv Captain Harlock tape?
    The world may never know.

      @IMissBionix 8 месяцев назад +9

Battle of the Planets was the original English adaptation. It added footage unique to the dub (featuring an all-new character called 7-Zark-7) to make up for edits that caused the runtime to slip below industry TV standards. In the '80s, the same production company did G-Force, which was a second attempt using the same footage, but intended to be "more faithful" while still edited. They tried again to re-dub the show in the '00s for kids, but that didn't materialize. Instead, ADV produced their own completely uncut version of the original series in 2005.
Eagle Riders is a combined dub of the sequel series Gatchaman II and Fighter. That is the only English-dubbed version of those shows to exist. ADV's successor company acquired the rights to both, but released them sub-only.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 8 месяцев назад +2

@@IMissBionix Battle of the Planets also had an all star voice cast including Casey Kasem and Alan Young. Something rare in an anime dub. Personally, I saw Gatchaman first and I just am no fan of the Battle dub. Not even said voice cast can save it, and they made some dumb choices. Keyop has Tourettes Syndrome and makes weird noises when he talks. Like Klunk from Dastardly and Muttley. Nowadays, if you so much as give a character an accent in a dub, the fanbase will never EVER let you live it down.

Well, the final episode they would allow, as the true final episode of Gatchaman was too dark to dub for G-Force and Battle of the Planets (and sadly, because of that, anyone who saw Eagle Riders before having the internet would be confused about the events, as it has Joe the Condor's adaptation, Joseph Trax, as missing in action).

The Live Action Gatchaman project by contrast took a simple idea (a team of orphans trained to fight an earthly secret society) and added so many unnecessary extra steps that make the OG battle of the planets look so much more faithful.

This pitch did not sound very good and frankly, was financially bizarre to do in the first place. Gatchaman wasn't going through a huge renaissance in Japan during the '90s. The only thing out during that time was a direct-to-video series reimagined for older audiences (which had gotten a release in the U.S. by the time this pitch was made). What was provoking a reimagining of it? All of the toys and the show itself would have to be made for the U.S. market. It's easy to think the show would've been destined for obscurity like all of the non-Power Rangers tokusatsu series. Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog wasn't unpopular, but even that was shortlived because the costs associated made it financially unjustifiable.

While I'd never be the type to say Digimon is a ripoff of Pokemon, I feel that Saban kind of had some issue that lead to them dubbing it as a competitor.

I don't think such a things exists, but according to some Pokémon's developers, when they first showed the games to Nintendo of America's staff they told them that they weren't so sure if U.S. childred would have find the Pokémon's designs appealing and NOA suggested that Pokémon Red/Blue graphics should be completely remade and change the Pokémon into more humanoid and muscular creatures. I think one of Game Freak's developers said that Pikachu's redesing looked like a sort of humanoid female for some reason. Obviously, remaking the game's entire graphics would have been incredible difficult and I assume in the end they realized that the game and anime's designs had marketing potential outside of Japan, but it's kind of incredible that back then people thought that Pokémon wouldn't appeal to children in the U.S.

Man, that was informative.. if slightly bizarre. LIke, that good and evil dichotomy was so sharp it's almost too ridiculous to buy into. Making the Science NInja's actual bird-people (and the girl a colorful peacock... well, quite progressive for it's time I suppose), making the enemies slime-people, and turning it all into a Power Rangers pastiche feels like it could have POSSIBLY found an audience, but it sounds so different from what the OG is about that I'm not sure the fans of this porperty would become fans of the original, and I wonder if the original IP-holders, if they ever seriously discussed this show, doubted that they could use this to grow their I when the two different shows are THIS different.
STill, I do wish I could see the pictures, just so I could see what level the bird-people designs were on. Potential furry-bait, or nightmarish abominations against taste and character design? Both are possible, but we will never know...

    Septic Swamp Slime?
While the idea of a live action Gatchaman sounds cool, it's not surprising this adaptation got a pass

Thank goodness this was never made....what a massive butchering of Gatchaman. I despise when peole take established franchises and try to turn them into THEIR own vision which resembles NOT the original. They almost did a Live action Voltron movie which was equally terrible

Heck even the Netflix reboot doesn’t stray too far from the original Voltron and its own GoLion source, which is darker and edgier.

@@SlapstickGenius23 Ohhhh Netflix DEFINITELY strayed....their Version of Gay Woketron ruined everything.

Its very generic. Its amazing how far removed this is from gatchaman. I wouldn't call it an adaptation. Maybe not even directly inspired by it.
Its like when a show inspires the genre its in, and this show just so happens to be from that genre too.

What is with America's weird obsession with Gatchaman? It has been adapted so many times over so many decades, but it's never really worked. Why Gatchaman? I like Gatchaman, but there are better shows from Japan that could have used this much attention.
Also, how many university bullies are there?

This also confused me a lot when attempting to research for the video. It had been dubbed numerous times under so many different names, it was very hard to keep track😅😅

While the anime series are far more varied than the stock 0079 template often deployed by most series, with the only common factor being a version of the Liger. They stopped making them and Hasbro is basically dying.
It’d be cool if there were series based off the Marvel comics or something like Iron Blooded Orphans. But there’s been nothing for almost twenty years.
