These illustrations look simple but very difficult to draw but this tutorial gives a stepwise guide that makes it simple and easy. It is absolutely true that by the end of the tutorial u will have an amazing art work ❤ thank you 💯
So I was recently struggling with getting a nice self portrait and I followed your tutorial and I indeed and VERY HAPPY with how mine turned out! your videos are a master class helping me overcome every challenge I feel I have in art! Thank you so much!
Calvin I would love to see a video on your pressure and smoothing settings for your pencil. I can’t seem to get settings I’m happy with. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the wonderful videos
You dont know how much I enjoyed watching your tutorial video! I dont think I can ever paint anything like this, but just watch through the entire video makes me smile and joyful! Thank you! I just love your paintings, they are so unique and awesome!
Hi thanks for the clear voice :) I’m hard to follow any kind of learning video so yeah your clear voice attracts my concentration to every command and tipps that you shared
Hi thank you for all the tutorials..i have been looking to illustrate something like this..i have done some of your tutorials and i think i get it how to make it looks like children book illustration..i have some idea to make it into animation too using procreate dreams. Thank you so much😭please keep posting your tutorial. I do really appreciate that.
I really learned a lot from your channel~ Great thanks!! May I know which version of iPad you are using in the video? Do you have any recommendations for beginners?
a better way to get the white layer behind that’s supposed to mask the background color..just duplicate the layer, then add a clipping mask layer on top of that. fill the shape with white then merge those two layers. place that under your original drawing. that will completely block out anything
Your tutorials are amazing and so inspiring! For your artwork on procreate what size canvas and what DPI do you use? I see you are able to use so many layers.
Aww thank you so much 😊 you can set the dpi to anything, it's really just a setting for the rulers and won't effect the print quality. For the resolution, I recommend using at least 3000px by 4000px. This will give you a lot of layers. In this video I was using 4000px by 5000px. The amount of layers will depend on the resolution of the file and the ipad model. usually the pro models have more ram, but all the newer ipads can have a bazillion layers. my iPad is old so it can make about 25 layers when my canvas is4000px by 5000
Hi. Made a little self portrait. It was fun. I thought I used the Blacksands paper but turns out I used the one that came with the brushes (with the watermelon example), is the effect very different?
I'd love to see it 😱 blacksands is similar to the regular paper, I'd say it's has a somewhat stronger and finer/grainier texture. Both or great though for painting people ☺️
Hi Calvin, I have you’re brushes and almost all your paper texture, I love it! il would really like to do some printing, which printer and paper would you recommend?
😱 thank you so much for your incredible support! I went back and forth for awhile but what I realized that I cared more about the paper and the vibrant colors/dark blacks. I cared less about super high resolution printing. So this means I can use a color laser printer. I use a Canon imageless color laser printer and this machine can print on any kinds of paper unless it's super thick or has extreme texture. I can even print on many types of watercolor paper. Obviously since it's a laser printer, it cannot print super fine stuff. It's slightly lower quality than the iPad screen itself but I think that is absolutely fine for my uses.
I love your style a lot! It's very particular. How would you describe your style? And thanks for all the useful tutorials and for not turning on a lot of ads! (even though I am premium youtube member so I am not affected by it but I still appreciate your gesture)
thank you so much! I would call this style 'naive whimsical watercolor'. I try to turn off os many ads as I can without upsetting RUclips 😅I think tutorials cannot be combined with ads because it makes it harder to follow
If I want to learn this style from basic, is it enough to learn from your channel or what course do you recommend? I want to be able to "create" a painting by myself, instead of relying on other tutorials.. Thank you!
Hi Calvin I really love your drawing style, can you draw Malaysian woman with 🧕 It’s hard to find reference in that category in youtube. Hope you don’t mind 😊
Can I use another pencil than the original Apple one? Mine is not working and I think to order one of those Amazon ones, but not sure if it will do the work..
Thank you so much! In my video, I can speed up the process. So I try to keep it simple for beginners. You can use clipping mask if you prefer that method. it's faster but for some people it's too advanced 🙏
hi! Thank you so much. I'm using an app called Procreate. It's an application/program you can buy for your iPad. It will work with any iPad. I think the best iPad right now is the iPad Air 5th Generation. You will also need an Apple Pencil. This is the white pen I am using. It has a lot of amazing features inside and it feels like the most amazing paintbrush ever!
Do you mean the white/blank area around the artwork? In most of my videos, the background is on another layer, so the selection tool wouldn't affect it. Usually I keep one element per layer and shade them individually
@calvinatdrifterstudio8438 yes. So when I add shading and try to feather. It goes on top of whatever background I have. Do you erase it? Because the shading is the top layer it overlaps, even with a seperate layer. Thanks for the reply!
How do I get the colour to say consistently the same , with the skin tone I brush along and keep the same pressure but it makes the dark patches like I have released the brush when I haven’t ?…..
Hi! This can be happening for several reasons. First, it could be inconsistency in the pressure. Either your are Changing pressure or the pencil is glitching and making stuttering strokes. You will notice that if you get a sort of broken line when you make one long stroke. Another thing could be the paper texture. Some of the textures might be too rough for people and this can make them look blotchy too.
hi! Can you describe the problem? You can message me on the Etsy store and attach a screenshot. The brushes should function correctly automatically. You can always download the brushes again if you want to reset them back to the original settings 🙏
Hi! This one uses the Blacksands paper texture. I put a link in the description but you can also find it here on my Etsy store: drifterstudio.etsy.com/listing/1425419281
Hi, i need you guys opinion. Please anyone answer. Do you guys love this kind of illustration? How old are you? My professor just roasted me for using this kind of work said it was childish. But when i ask my friends and people my age they said they love it. Pls feel free to write down your opinion, i need it for my assignment.
That background noise of people talking etc - is that part of the music? If not, why didn't you edit it out? Only music without that background noise would make the video more comfortable to watch.
Yeah, you are right. I stopped using that track. My newer videos have better audio. Honestly the audio side of things has been the hardest thing to perfect because it sounds so differently on different devices. On some of my videos I can't even understand my voice because the bass is too boosted on my TV... but it sounds normal on the iPad 🤣 Originally I liked the background talking track because it hid some of the ambient noise in my house (kids yelling). Now I have a better recording booth and I learned a few tricks to eliminate background noises.
You are the best Procreate teacher I’ve ever watched. Thank youuuu ❤
and the brushes are awesome! I use them everyday

Can someone please tell me what's the closest brushes in procreate to the ones that the tutor used in the video ? cuz i can't afford to buy them 🥲
Классный урок! Но почему не воспользоваться обтравочной маской для теней? Тогда не пришлось стирать растекания кисти

When you do the freehand select for the shading, how do you keep it from going onto the background?

If you know how to draw or generally trace your traditional drawings in procreate can you skip the warping process?
WhatsApp kind of the canvas u used on this video ?
