@@DanCBearded I get it to an extent as I used to be the same way. But once the idea of a 'better" beard was planted in my head it took root and I was determined to find out how I could achieve this! Some people just can't get past that inner macho man.

Caring for my beard has been a source of pride and greatly improved my mental health. I started my beard journey after suffering a career-ending injury. If it wasn't for caring for my beard it would have been very easy to slip into depression. For me, one of the early signs of depression is the lack of hygiene. I'm not leaving the house what does it matter. That is where it starts for me. I broke that cycle when I started caring for my beard by using oil every day and combing/brushing it. It was a simple task but has paid huge results now going on 2 years later, where most weeks I do not leave the house with online schooling, however, I am dressed and my beard is groomed, and looks nice every day. So my brother-in-law can flick all the crap he wants that my beard products out way my wifes's makeup. I am happier and my beard is healthier because of it. Also a huge THANK YOU Dan for the content you put out. I have learned a lot and that knowledge in part has helped keep be out of depression!!
Knowledge is power. Since beards have become popular men wonder what style and how to achieve it, so that's where you come in. Thanks for your time and effort.
Question for you. If you're judging a beard competition and it's an all natural category and it's 100 legit all natural do you score them higher or lower versus someone that uses products in the same category? I know what I would do curious about your thoughts. (Side note use products!)
Great question! I would not let that factor in if it was beard wash and beard oil. For me, I would knock down on natural if it appeared they used styling products like wax or used heat
My grandfather used coconut 🥥 oil Way before any companies came out he believed in taking care of how you looked at all times he was a farmer his beard was always neat what he washed it in I have no idea on that but I know it was clean if a person doesn't want to take care of what is on their face they probably don't want to take care of anything else that's just my thoughts
Have had a beard for 20yrs (since I was about 20) and was told for years how “perfect” it was. Always kept it at an inch or 2 and washed it daily with my body wash and conditioned it with hair conditioner about once a week. It was a year and a half ago that I decided to grow it out and a year ago when I found your channel and started using oils and butters. I keep it around 7” now and there’s no way it would look good if I still had my old way of doing things. Thanks for all the informative videos Dan
My Dad has a and has done since I can remember. He uses zero beard products and when I told him what I’m using his answer was why lol maybe I’ll show him this video👍
I really enjoy taking care of my beard and yes it has also helped other aspect of my life, not only my physical health but my mental health as well. I respect and envy those genetic outliers that can have a glorious beard without much work. But I agree that anyone can benefit from some form of beard care. I’m just an individual who’s beard benefits immensely from some TLC 💯 Fantastic video once again Dan! Positivity is definitely the way to approach those type of people. Hopefully they might even try and like taking care of their beards. 💯👊🤘
I jokingly will say I’ve gone full on feminine as an icebreaker if beard topic comes up lol… Between brushes, combs, blow dryer, heated brush, products etc. at the end of the day like you said it’s about taking care of yourself and feeling good, having confidence. There is nothing wrong with that! 👍
Dan in one of your previous videos you said about your choices of beard conditioners, I went an bought the seven potions citrus one. wow I love it Since starting to grow my beard out I have always taken care of it as a matter of pride and have even gotten, my father into using proper washes, conditioner, oils and balms
what about occasionally taking a break from, or minimizing, using soaps and beard products? just water alone in the shower, to rinse out, and use a little oil, feels good and simple to me. i like to alternate what i do with my beard and that includes some days of nothing or minimal. is there any merit in trying to utilize our bodies self manufactured oils, etc.? does using products give some benefit, but also potentially loose some of the benefit of the use of natural excreted oils?
Like my uncle would say: _if it works for you and it doesn't do any harm, go on champ!_ Personally, I prefer to keep personal hygiene tidy and constant and that also includes my beard. Also, like my other uncle would say: _the order outside of you is an extension of the order within you._ My two uncles (they're totally real, trust me) and I say thanks again, Dan!
I have an uncle who is the opposite to yours. He has had a full beard for over 40 years (had to shave it off during the 1st two years of the coronavirus pandemic because he is a medical doctor), and he used to take care of it, but whenever I see him now, he never grooms it. It looks very messy.
Sorry if this is unrelated but I was scratching my beard earlier cuz it was itchy and I noticed some blood under my nail. Has that happened to you? Why is this happening? I wonder if it's my shampoo/conditioner. I oil my beard twice a day
I have heard some say they only soap armpits, genitals, rear, and perhaps feet, only rinsing everything else, including hair and beard. They may do so twice a day. They experience no social detriment, but I’ve only their word for their routine. I doubt such a routine could be effective for an extended period of time. Certainly not for me.
I wash my beard every day, but I discovered that oils, and butters dry my skin out, but I also don't know if that's because I have sensitive skin, or if it's be cause I don't use that stuff enough.
I would say it’s just that you haven’t found the right ones. The right oil should not dry at all. Also the right routine. For example, applying oil to a damp beard makes all the difference
My mom survived ovarian cancer for 24 years. That is not the norm for that terminal disease. She didn’t take care of herself either and I learned she suffered more than I knew. Her mentality was it is my body. Imagine how much better and how much longer she would have lived if she took care of herself. Genetics do have a huge part to play, but life can always be better. We don’t fully know the outlier’s story. Sorry for the sad comment, but this is what I think about with outliers and genetics. Get the best potential out of life and here it is our beards. Then follow DanC for more information.
Haha, this is funny. I take very good care of my beard but I actually stopped using deodorant Several years ago. My pits never stink.. you could ask my wife. Lol . Plus I usually take 2 showers a day. Another great video Dan, thank you..
No wash is leading to allergies for me. Also I would not like to have a itchy beard. I do often do no products during my day off while I do nothing. The feeling is okay for one day, but not more. I also need to use a conditioner the day after since I didn't comb it and I lose usually a bunch of hair everytime. 🥀
I m sure that uncle Cletus over there uses home made stuff daily taking care of his beard that nobody knows of, and treats it with a daily wash at the waterwell. Not everybody speaks out of his grooming secrets. As for me, even a good washing and some beard oil drops transform my beard instantly, feeling and being clean and fresh for my nose above. Live a warm and dry day or two without running water available and see what happens to your beard.
I've known some people who can pull it off, straight enough hair and i suppose good facial skin with good oil production, but you end up with a stinky dry beard so not ideal. The head hair thing is a interesting one, for some nothing can be best but its pretty rare. I would argue a case not purely in favor of no products but similar to newer beard products i do believe its very probable most hair products could do with being far gentler and more natural. Circling that back to beards and in defense of "Uncle Just Rinses" with some of shampoos out there i can imagine 20+ years ago doing nothing was better then doing too much for many men.
Hmmm, interesting thought. Idk about doing nothing being better though. We have always had better than nothing options. Our head hair is very resilient, so even something like soap (stripping) would be better than nothing.
It depends on what kind of beard you have. For the longest time, I had a very short-hair goatee that I didn't know would look better adding more volume to my face. Afterwards, I noticed how much more difficult it was to keep things controlled and looking nice, so I invested in some beard care products. The difference was immediately apparent, although I will say that my beard is fine if I accidentally skip applying some beard oil or balm for one day. The next day, however, it's obvious when my beard feels drier than the Sahara.
For the topic of the video, I disagree. I don’t think it matters at all what type of beard you have, you should be taking care of it. Does that mean beard oil, butter, balm, wax, wash, conditioner, and everything else? No, of course not. It doesn’t even have to mean daily. Different beards will call for different products and product types. However, you should be doing something for the hygiene of that area of your body. Especially with the beards/convos referenced in this video, which is always a family member with a big beard that does nothing.
@@DanCBearded I probably should have added a tidbit that washing my face (and beard) was still important. You would have to really go out of your way to avoid getting your beard wet in the shower, and there's still your face to take of too. This was more about using beard-care products specifically for very short beards.
Not being a genetic outlier taking a little time to take care of my beard is a must for it to feel and be healthy. It's also my morning zen before the craziness of the day lol.
Lol they like being stinky. Taking care of my beard and watching what I put in it has translated to my eating habits. I’m much more cautious and avoid foods with a lot of additives in it. Beard care 100% translates to other every day things.
I watch many audio/hi fi and photography YT channel. Many of the creators are bearded. A few are taking good care and some not so much. For example, one particular hi fi guy who has mentioned he is in MI, has amongst best beards (gray!) of non-beard YT channels. On the other hand another from a popular YT channel (for an an audio shop) in or near Baltimore, need to groom and take better care of his dark, prominent beard.
It's usually the older generation that I run into who think this way, or are quite "manly" men who wrestle crocodiles etc. When I run into someone like that I run home and make them a bottle of homemade beard oil and give it to them for free. It also helps that I am of a similar generation, and look quite manly man-man myself, so they listen to me. Some of them even ask how I get my beard so healthy looking because I compliment their beard initially. It's how you approach people that matters, I think. Just as we don't like it when people like this dismiss our beard grooming out of hand, why would they like it when we dismiss their grooming choices out of hand? Mutual respect is the starting point to changing minds.
...or the guy that says "I can't grow a beard. Every time I do, it drives me nuts." To that I ask them what products did you use? It's always "None." So, I'll offer up some of my best "Dan C Talking Points". If they resist knowledge, I respond with "Huh. Well, may a beard just isn't for you". Sone guys rocking their 1/2" stubble will jump into a beard conversation to say they don't use anything in their beard, and they don't see why they would. THOSE guys are just trolls, lol.
What that sounds like to me is: if they DID use quality beard products and take care of their beard, it would be jaw-droppingly amazing and not just nice or great. If you're squandering potential, in any aspect, that's nothing to be proud of.
Uncle Frank may do more for his beard than anyone realises. He may be using products but he’s keeping that quiet. Who knows what he putting on his beard.
I got good genes. Had some type of facial har all thru hi school. But since using beard products I've been noticed & received more compliments. And the beard feels so much better 2.
I don’t have a "great beard" but a "good one" .I use products wash it and comb it everyday. That said, there have been periods of time when I just washed it and combed it when I woke up, adding nothing else and the truth is, there wasn’t any real difference. Maybe just a little bit more difficult to tame but that’s about it, so I have no difficulty believing in the Uncle Frank concept.
The key is that you wash it though! That’s an extremely important step in hygiene. But for sure, there are some genetic outliers that don’t need as many things as others.
I am a manly man I use nothing... I buy to support and look at the product only then give it away...lol Jk...but on a real note my dad used to tell me that if you are perfectly healthy that you do not need deodorant ... that your pits will not stink... that the stink comes from the garbage we comsume... and that he never used deodorant ... what's crazy is that he never had B.O.
I think another component of that mentality is pushing back on something they view as "hip" and "trendy". In their defense, there has historically been a prominent presence of annoying hipsterdom in the beard world, and I understand being turned off by that. However, I feel like bragging about not doing anything to your beard is like bragging about never washing your hair, and in my view not taking proper care of yourself is the opposite of manly. I try to combat that by highlighting how easy it is, and just straight up enjoyable, to maintain a healthy beard. The routine and the results makes ya feel good. Simple as that.
I think information is key though. Men have taken care of their beards for literally thousands of years and with pride. The Vikings for example were extremely meticulous with their beards, and that has to be about the opposite of hipster. I do understand your point though and how stereotypes/stigmas can impact something like this.
@@DanCBearded that’s unfortunate. The accelerator oil was one of my go to’s. Learners about it from this channel!! Do you have any recommendations on a solid replacement? I already currently rotate b/n Artuis Man winters chill and Heavy weight Honor Initiative oil. That accelerator was the 3rd in my night time line up unfortunately.
Don't have or know any Uncle Franks but I suspect the Uncle Franks we're talking about here actually do take care of their beards...sort of. I imagine that they simply use regular bar soap (Dial, Irish Spring, Coast, etc.) or body wash and/or regular off the shelf shampoo on their beards. They either don't know about specialty beard products or refuse to pay the cost and/or go to the trouble to use them. After their beard shampoo (with Prell?), they probably do comb through their beards with a Dollar Store plastic comb. As to how good looking and/or healthy their beards are is, I'd say, questionable regardless of genetics. I suspect most of these guys simply don't want to shave and just let their beards grow with, shall we say, minimal upkeep. Of course, there probably are some slovenly Uncle Franks out there that don't practice what most of us consider to be good hygiene with their beards as well as themselves in general. Hopefully the rest of us can totally avoid those Uncle Franks.
🙄For real though. I know someone that literally prides themself in NEVER maintaining any of their tools or equipment. Then when his mower engine blows up in five years, well it was just junk. This is so silly, why would you not want to look and feel better, just another one of these "man things" that we need to get past and educate about. I love when I get the question of "do you use those beard oils or washes ha ha", of COURSE I do! As soon as I say that people normally reply with wait, what? I tell them I can instantly notice a huge difference just going one day without products.
@@DanCBearded For sure! People are so taken aback when I reply with, of course I do! Kind of funny to make them rethink their whole bashing thing, as you are telling them about it. Especially when it is someone you know well.
Yeah, I don't understand dudes who reject taking care of themselves as if it's girly to give a sh*t about the way you look and smell. I used to do NOTHING to my beard years ago before I knew better and it was brittle, very dry hair and skin underneath, and it was lighter in color because most of it was DEAD. Thankfully, I stumbled upon the beard community and got schooled. Like, my dudes, just lighten up and take care of your damn beard. Men have been putting products in their beards since ancient times. Look at those sculptures of Greek dudes. You think they just let their beards rot? Plus, girls don't like GROSS GUYS who don't care.
Oh I always am, that’s what my videos are often about! I will have a current morning routine video in the near future though demonstrating. Spoiler… it hasn’t really changed
@@DanCBearded thanks for the content and your efforts! i mean, if your time allows you, to show what you prefer doing during a day (or week if it's important-'crucial') related to beard care

@@DanCBearded I get it to an extent as I used to be the same way. But once the idea of a 'better" beard was planted in my head it took root and I was determined to find out how I could achieve this! Some people just can't get past that inner macho man.
I had a buddy like that until one day I was at his house and for the first time used his bathroom and well I found out he was in fact useing products and tools and it wasn't a shared one this was his bathroom but I never said anything just made me chuckle and my own inside joke type of thing
Man I love to hear that journey!
Knowledge is power. Since beards have become popular men wonder what style and how to achieve it, so that's where you come in.
Thanks for your time and effort.
Happy to be that person!
I have a uncle is that way, I offered to get him beard products for his birthday and he laughed at me. Lol
The laugh is always there
Question for you.
@@DanCBearded yeah and you can tell a beard that uses any product and no products at all
Big time, normally by being brittle and full of split ends lol
My grandfather used coconut 🥥 oil Way before any companies came out he believed in taking care of how you looked at all times he was a farmer his beard was always neat what he washed it in I have no idea on that but I know it was clean if a person doesn't want to take care of what is on their face they probably don't want to take care of anything else that's just my thoughts
Very well said!
Just looking at your beard for two seconds is like a kick in the pants that makes me want to take care of mine.
Here to help!
In the Hispanic household frank is known as Pancho lol and yup we here that too.
I like that even more lol
Have had a beard for 20yrs (since I was about 20) and was told for years how “perfect” it was. Always kept it at an inch or 2 and washed it daily with my body wash and conditioned it with hair conditioner about once a week. It was a year and a half ago that I decided to grow it out and a year ago when I found your channel and started using oils and butters. I keep it around 7” now and there’s no way it would look good if I still had my old way of doing things. Thanks for all the informative videos Dan
That’s so cool to hear Brian!
Soon it will be Relapsed Uncle Frank 🤣
Haha yup
I always get the compliment from woman who say they don't like long beards and if it looked like mine they can tell I look after it
Oh yeah, love that!
😂 one step at a time for those uncle Frank's. First step was getting him sober, next step is getting him to take care of his beard.
True true!

My Dad has a and has done since I can remember. He uses zero beard products and when I told him what I’m using his answer was why lol maybe I’ll show him this video👍
Can’t hurt!
I really enjoy taking care of my beard and yes it has also helped other aspect of my life, not only my physical health but my mental health as well.
I respect and envy those genetic outliers that can have a glorious beard without much work. But I agree that anyone can benefit from some form of beard care. I’m just an individual who’s beard benefits immensely from some TLC 💯
Fantastic video once again Dan! Positivity is definitely the way to approach those type of people. Hopefully they might even try and like taking care of their beards. 💯👊🤘
Thank you Phil, love this comment! And yes, taking care of my beard has led to so many other positive improvements in my life, literally
Amen!
Agreed! 🙌👍👍
Dan in one of your previous videos you said about your choices of beard conditioners, I went an bought the seven potions citrus one. wow I love it
Since starting to grow my beard out I have always taken care of it as a matter of pride and have even gotten, my father into using proper washes, conditioner, oils and balms
That’s awesome to hear Simon!
Won’t be long before you get the comment “My aunt does nothing for her beard and it is awesome “! 😂😂😂
I want everyone to take care of their beard! lol
Mine beard is pretty, big but all I do to mine is wash it and brush it as I would with the hair on top of my head. No special "beard products".
Hopefully that’s working for you!
Washing is very important!
Wash and oil are by far the most important, yup!
I want to give myself every advantage I can with my beard.
You are in the right spot my friend!
what about occasionally taking a break from, or minimizing, using soaps and beard products? just water alone in the shower, to rinse out, and use a little oil, feels good and simple to me. i like to alternate what i do with my beard and that includes some days of nothing or minimal. is there any merit in trying to utilize our bodies self manufactured oils, etc.? does using products give some benefit, but also potentially loose some of the benefit of the use of natural excreted oils?
Totally fine to take breaks if that works for your beard!
Like my uncle would say: _if it works for you and it doesn't do any harm, go on champ!_ Personally, I prefer to keep personal hygiene tidy and constant and that also includes my beard. Also, like my other uncle would say: _the order outside of you is an extension of the order within you._
My two uncles (they're totally real, trust me) and I say thanks again, Dan!
Love that!
I have an uncle who is the opposite to yours. He has had a full beard for over 40 years (had to shave it off during the 1st two years of the coronavirus pandemic because he is a medical doctor), and he used to take care of it, but whenever I see him now, he never grooms it. It looks very messy.
Yikes! Maybe you can help him out
@@DanCBearded hopefully he listens.
Sorry if this is unrelated but I was scratching my beard earlier cuz it was itchy and I noticed some blood under my nail. Has that happened to you? Why is this happening? I wonder if it's my shampoo/conditioner. I oil my beard twice a day
I have not had that happen. Not sure what would cause that
@@DanCBearded Do you know anything about yellow dandruff? I find yellow dandruff in my bears sometimes
Very interesting!
Taking care of yourself for sure makes all the difference, in so many ways
Haha, this is funny. I take very good care of my beard but I actually stopped using deodorant Several years ago. My pits never stink.. you could ask my wife. Lol . Plus I usually take 2 showers a day.
Another great video Dan, thank you..
Thanks!!
@@DanCBearded I was hoping you said something funny about my pits. Lol
💪🤠🤳
No wash is leading to allergies for me. Also I would not like to have a itchy beard. I do often do no products during my day off while I do nothing. The feeling is okay for one day, but not more. I also need to use a conditioner the day after since I didn't comb it and I lose usually a bunch of hair everytime. 🥀
Big time with the allergies!
Really like that hat!
Thank you!
Spot on!
Same same same!
Lol they like being stinky. Taking care of my beard and watching what I put in it has translated to my eating habits. I’m much more cautious and avoid foods with a lot of additives in it. Beard care 100% translates to other every day things.
Sooo true!
I also discovered that. It's pretty amazing how beard care helps ya improving other aspects of life!
Uncle Si Robertson 😂
First one to say something on that connection 😂
What would you recommend for someone who does not have a long full beard but a medium length goatee?
Beard wash and beard oil
I watch many audio/hi fi and photography YT channel. Many of the creators are bearded. A few are taking good care and some not so much.
For example, one particular hi fi guy who has mentioned he is in MI, has amongst best beards (gray!) of non-beard YT channels. On the other hand another from a popular YT channel (for an an audio shop) in or near Baltimore, need to groom and take better care of his dark, prominent beard.
Oh for sure! Wide range
I know people who don’t wear deodorant 🤢. It’s no fun being around them lol 😂
Yikesss
Keep being a great role model!!
Good one , made me laugh lol
lol I’m glad
I can’t do nothing, my beard dries out if I’m outside working. I need to maintain it.
Same!
My wife doesn't think she needs to do anything with her beard so I'm going to have her watch this video. Thanks!!
Perfect! 😂
Woah! Tread lightly friend
...or the guy that says "I can't grow a beard.
Many many trolls out there lol
What that sounds like to me is: if they DID use quality beard products and take care of their beard, it would be jaw-droppingly amazing and not just nice or great. If you're squandering potential, in any aspect, that's nothing to be proud of.
Oh no doubt about it!!
I can only go a day or two without washing and using oil.
I can’t do any. Gets dry and crazy
I’ve stopped using butter and conditioner just oil and my beard stopped breaking
That is awesome man! I have always said the two most important products are oil and wash
Uncle Frank may do more for his beard than anyone realises. He may be using products but he’s keeping that quiet. Who knows what he putting on his beard.
lol I highly doubt that
My co worker has a beard and I have tried telling him to use beard oil and even beard wash and beard conditioner
It can be really tough to get people to try
@@DanCBearded I understand he got it shaped up and trimmed
I got good genes. Had some type of facial har all thru hi school. But since using beard products I've been noticed & received more compliments. And the beard feels so much better 2.
That is great!
I don't know how ppl use nothing, it's crazy if I did that I'd be itchy and dry.
Because they are real men! 😂 I truly don’t get it either. Feels horrible
Dan should you use beard oil everyday?
Yup!
That’s great! I love food and snacks too much to be perfectly healthy lol
To Uncle sober Frank 🥃😜
Cheers!
@@DanCBearded I've pointed that out to skeptics too. Maintaining beards is ancient. Not taking care of them is new.

@@DanCBearded my guy!!! You are a treasure to the beard community
Good thoughts!
Exception and not the rule
Exactly!
Heck yeah! I love that question too and being an advocate for positive men’s hygiene
@@DanCBearded For sure! People are so taken aback when I reply with, of course I do! Kind of funny to make them rethink their whole bashing thing, as you are telling them about it. Especially when it is someone you know well.
Wash and go with a litle oil to smooth the ride
The two most important products!
