I was there. What a phenomenal gig it was. I saw them back in 1980 and then on the last tour in Hamburg. Both times they were just great. Back then they had a bigger line up than here but the sound at this gig was just unbelievable. The shape and texture of the sound and the play of improvisation was for me David Cairns guitar and John O'Neill saxophone. I'm a fan of mostly 60s 70s guitar and after hearing Cairns on his Tele at Hamburg I found he had played with Nils Lofgren during Secret Affair's hiatus ( I also remember seeing mention he played with Lynyrd Skynyrd but i can't find the reference now so i may be wrong). Now Cairns was great at Hamburg but at this gig with O'Neill it was just fantastic. At the gig I was told O'Neill had been in Foreigner early on and it turns out so was Cairns. Foreigner have grown on me recently, I'm no Foreigner expert but what was going on with them at the gig was not any Foreigner type thing to my reckoning. They had this kind of flowing undulating wall of sound going on between them. Very difficult for me to place. Everything coming and going from Motown and Ska, R&B, early 70's Soul, Blues, Rock. There was Hendrix flooding in and out. Except for a Jaz band at the Wag in 1990 My only real reference for Guitar and Saxophone is Mick Taylor and Bobby Keys say on the live bootleg Brussel's Affair (1973). Cairns and O'Neill through were much more unmoored but never out of reach, rather pulled you out to sea with them. This was not a nostalgia gig at all. They did have a back projection of 60's bands and MODs like the Small Faces and The Who but they had taken this tradition to a new place or by the synthesis of different possible unrealised departures from the paths actually taken from say 1960 to now. The Music press would be better thinking about the relation of Popular music and Deleuze and Foucault to Secret Affair now, rather than a retro reinvention critique of 60s 70s rock bands. I wish I had the knowledge and concepts to better discuss this say like Rick Beato but i only have metaphors. So perhaps think the sound as a picture of "The Thing" but on a ship in a storm at sea. Not frozen but beautifully dynamic, at once both at a distance and interoceptive. If that is not clear then go 'n' see 'em. Many thanks for posting this vid but its unfortunate the quality of the sound doesn't come across at all on the vid even though the gig sound man was really good. You could here the individual 12 string electrics of the support band for example. The vocalist Ian Page again was on top form with the audience. To get this you must listen to, and read, the actual lyrics and then see Page live, that's all I'm gonna say. What a brilliant gig I was gonna comment straight after but was basically on the settee with an hangover and an ache over for last few days. Many thanks brighton59

@@kevinplant9129 I'm trying to mate. I spent a weekend trying to think about nothing, then found out that nothing is the same as everything, so i guess I had really being trying to think about everything. Ever likely it didn't work.
