Those Homecoming gatherings were filled with phenomenal singers, and it was such a pleasure to see all of them appreciating each other's skill. My mother and I attended the 3-day Homecoming festivals in Gatlinburg back in the 1990s and got to interact with many of them personally. They don't just sing with passion, they sing with faith. They honor their elder statesmen in the genre, too. The pianist, I believe, is Anthony Burger, and he was a prodigy.

For any who have truly trusted Christ, you may think you have left God, but He has not left you. We all face the hurt of reality in our failures and the shortcomings of other Christians - and even doubts about fundamentals of the Christian message we trusted - but we should reach the point the disciples did when many followers left and Jesus asked them "Will you also go away?" But Peter answered "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life". One of the great things about the Gaither "Homecoming" ministry is the focus on the elderly and the reality of hopes and lingering fears even for committed believers towards the end of life. The ministry must have provided comfort and assurance for so many without denying the brokenness of which we are all a part. Both Bill Gaither and David Phelps have lost siblings before their time and it adds sensitivity and depth to the message they share. There is quite a story to the life of the wonderful pianist Anthony Burger too, a life seemingly cut short too soon. Apologies for the long comment, but hope it may help.

I've never watched you before, so am not familiar with you. But what I saw tonight was not a man overcome with the emotion of the song, but a man who was overcome with the conviction he felt, from this man's amazing witnessing through his voice, and it touched a wellspring within you. One of the greatest moments of my entire 22 years of life was getting to go to a Gaither concert when I was 16 years old and hear David’s voice from the _front few rows._ Because I also believe the words he sings are true, I am being completely serious when I say that it was a HOLY experience.
David knows how to take the song he is singing and go straight up into the heavenlies and bring the anointing down into the place where he is, and bring the presence of God into everyone's presence. This is such a gift of the Holy Spirit that few have and I am so absolutely blessed to hear David Phelps sing, any song for that matter, because, he does put himself into the song and he is actually an instrument of worship!
