you would be right. His team plays not too far from ours so we play a few times a year.

I've only recently started playing volleyball with positions and rotations and struggled with setting the ball quickly to the pins. To combat this I found adding topsin to my sets help and was wondering if there are any other ways the spin can effect your sets?

I wouldn’t recommend adding topspin to your sets, it will make it different for hitters to track and hit, and you run the risk of getting called for a double contact. A good drill to work on speed of your sets is to get a balls length away from a wall and set the ball quickly at the wall right above your head. Focus on quick hands and quick release with yours wrists while controlling the ball, this should help.

Hey there Mitch, as someone aspiring to be a great setter - thanks a lot. I dig (pun intended) this format and it´s really helpful to see your input together with some play-by-play visuals.
One thing in this video - the music was off-putting. I felt like I in Prince of Persia or something. Would prefer some calmer, not-as-oriental-sounding music.
    Keep up the great work!

Glad you dig it! Lots more setter-specific content hopefully in the near future. And thanks for the feedback. Edited this one somewhat on-the-go and didn't get the full listen through with loud speakers like usual. I'll make sure to adjust the background music going forward.

On 5:57 When you mean "turn your shoulders" to get more speed on a set do you mean rotating your torso and spin a little like how the setter does in the clip or are you talking about something else? I ask because turning your body seems kind of sacrilegious to setting where squaring yourself is so important

When setting an oppo quick ball you want to turn your shoulders into the court. It's not also a full turn but its one way to hold the middle and still get a quick set out to the right side. To rotate the right should to the attacker.
"Turning your shoulders" here is often more accurate than just a pure launch back on a quickest and allows for the best connections on those types of sets.

If you watch the Marymount vs. Rutgers match from 2023, Derek Au an all-american caliber setter is sensational at this technique and connected with another all-american Andrew Zaleck consistently all game.

@@mitchsterkenburg I checked out that guy and he's phenomenal. Do you have/know of any other resources or RUclips videos I can look at to get a more in-depth explanation or guide to this because this would definitely up my game
