  • When it was announced that Mechanical issues had sidelined the Queen of Steam, the Norfolk & Western #611for the Weekend October 28th & 29th. Me and the group of friends I had traveled to Staunton with were trying to figure out our next plan. From trying to to possible get a night refunded at the Hotel or what was next as the two groups would be splitting Sunday for different destinations. It was then I remembered my friend Train Wizard hit up the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on his way down this way, and we decided that was how we were going to spend Saturday.
This was my first time seeing the Western Maryland #1309 since February when it was painted in it's Chesapeake & Ohio Colors. While it was painted back into its Western Maryland Paint scheme, it still had the Southern PS-4 3 Chime longbell. Going for the most basic chase route to get the most shots, I would say we did successful. I thought the Last Baldwin, 1309 sounded better this time around, and put on a fantastic show. While not as in depth, as I originally planned this fall to be before the 611 excursions were announced, I feel this short video came out great. After we left that Saturday ,Originally I was planning on heading back up to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on Sunday with ‪@GTRailFanProductions‬. However good news awaited us back in Staunton. From a few classic locations on the line, Enjoy my day chase of the 1309 & the Dash 8 #558 the Remaining Fall colors!
I chased this Trip with ‪@GTRailFanProductions‬ BLE866, and ‪@DroppedSignal‬. I also ran into ‪@tristanrailproductions5820‬ and ‪@JerryDoesThings_1604‬ in Frostburg.
The Western Maryland #1309 is a Compound Articulated H6 Class Mallet Steam Locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. It would operate until just 1956 before being retired. In 1972, luck played in favor with the Locomotive as it went to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore Maryland. In 2014 it was announced that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad would acquire the 1309, and restore it to operation while the class 734 went down for it's 1472 day Inspection. In 2020 after 7 years the engine would move under its own power, and in 2021 it debuted in revenue service. I have caught the engine various different times since then!
Its funny to think, my second planned video from the 611 trip was originally supposed to be of the C&O #701 Well at least I kept it a C&O engine! That being said, nothing really is planned for November right now. If all goes well I will be chasing the real polar express in December, #1225 and I am hoping for another chase with the 1309 before the end of the year!
