4K master is clearer and more colorful because it’s taken from the original negative. The Criterion master has a weird yellow tint and loses a lot of its detail due to not being taken from the negative, rather a foreign dupe i believe
The Criterion versions are sourced from the 2008 remasters that Toho provided for them. Media Blasters DAM BD is also sourced from the same '08 remaster.
@@UltraRiderGorizard Oh, I must be misremembering about the foreign dupe. It’s still really weird that Toho would use a decade old remaster for a box set, but then again, It’s Toho
Yeah. My best guess is since Toho is preparing the 4K remasters, the old masters have little value now and probably licensed them to Criterion at an affordable fee for a bundle (15 films for the price of a few)
Strange I didn’t even know there was a 4K release for DAM. Was this one of the TV broadcasts? Maybe I’m just misremembering but I thought after Invasion of Astro Monster they did Hedorah
Yes. So far, Toho had done 4K remasters for... Godzilla '54 King Kong vs. Godzilla Matango Mothra vs. Godzilla Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster Invasion of Astro-Monster Frankenstein vs. Baragon Destroy All Monsters Godzilla vs. Hedorah Godzilla vs. Biollante
@@1978hoops yes and it should be unbanned. If Tom & Jerry cartoons with a warning about black face jokes can be released so can a movie with unfortunate representations of folk with radiation poisoning
What a massive, massive improvement. Makes me want to burn my criterion set. Toho is finally releasing more of these on UHD (no English subs). Hopefully we'll get a release here, though it'll probably be criterion, sadly.
@@TannerBartko Damn, definitely disagree with the artwork part and I think the packaging is fine but I do agree with the multiple movies per disc not being great. I do know Toho was reluctant to give them the originals for them to scan and only let them use their own outdated scans so if they do rerelease in 4k at least the image will look nice

i dont like how 4K version have the picture cut more on left and right side
You have a sharp eye. I didn't even notice because I was comparing top and bottom of both screens.

Why is it sad that it would be from Criterion?

Where did you find this 4K version from?
I managed to find a copy on internet archive. Here it is…

Thanks. Also when are you coming back to do reviews and your kaiju dvd/blu ray collection?
Does the 4K version have English subtitles?

Toho needs to release the 4K restorations on Blu ray
they did
The 4k looks so clear but im not a fun of the color change
