So for anyone who wants to actually know, that assembly is what’s called a “turnbuckle” or “bottlescrew”, the double sided threaded piece that is holding the rods together. The purpose of the turnbuckle is to hold together and put alot of tension on those two rods, and is most likely one of the many holding the carnival ride up. The nut underneath that he twisted is a lock-nut. They are sometimes used to better secure the body to the end fittings. However in this application my assumption is that they used the locking nut to temporarily hold the body in place while attaching the other end fitting, then once connected the lock nut was backed off, from there the body of the turnbuckle is twisted pulling the rods together, the tension alone is more than enough to hold the assembly together. Therefore the light twist he applied to the locking nut in the grand scheme of things did absolutely nothing. If that turnbuckle were to fail it would be a catastrophic failure do to an overload of tension and it would bend or snap, rather than it slowly unscrewing itself and the ride falling apart. TLDR: if you can see a good, equal amount of threads from both rods on the inside of the turnbuckle, and the turnbuckle itself isn’t damaged, you’re gonna be fine.

My dad owned a welding shop when I was a kid, he was called to a traveling carnival once to do some repairs. When he came back to the shop he told me never to ride rides at these types of carnivals... He said every ride they wanted him to try and repair was basically just rust held together by paint.
As a ride operator at a carnival here’s an explanation: That nut that he tightened was just there as a precaution to Keep that turnbuckle (the part above it) from moving you’d have to grab and twist the turnbuckle left to break the pressure And loosen it so in other words it didn’t matter either way 😭
