Awesome tutorial! I`ve got question though, let`s take for instance your charater you`re showing - once you do a walk cycle for him, how do you treat hands that will be going out of body and casting shadows beyond character? Animating the mask to stay within hand?
Can we simply import AI files to the composition, lets say if I design a character in Illustrator, and easily animate it? Will I have the same options that I have if I drew it from scratch in AE?
this technique is a hidden gem that has been buried deep inside after effect. I think you have read the after effect's manual cover to cover to figure this out, right?

To make the shadow of the hands, I have created a shape layer and hidden it outside the body using the "Set matte" effect.

Yes, in this technique, it doesn't matter whether your design was created from scratch in After Effects or imported from Illustrator.
