- If you are looking for a simple colored pencil tutorial this video is for you!
In this video I demonstrate how you can achieve realism in your art by focusing on two very simple techniques - layering and blending.
I'm keeping the illustration simple so that it is easy to follow even if this is the first time that you have used color pencils.
I'm using Budget paper and Arteza pencils. As I go through the video I suggest a few tips for avoiding the waxy bloom that Arteza pencils can create and a simple method to create a smooth, seamless blend.
Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced artist looking for a simple quick tutorial, this demonstration will be for you.

Thanks Theresa. It's great to see a tutorial in budget pencils. I've just bought a set of castle art gold pencils and will have a play with them.
Happy drawing! 😊
How realistic and wonderful
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much! 😊
So beautiful love the colours 🥰
Thanks so much 😊
Love this so much!! ❤
So pleased that you like it! :)
You might try using a gray pencil first in the areas around the body which are darker pink. I would then gently blend the gray and then layer the layers of pink. Doing this helps with the darker shades which you can refine as you normally do.
This project is a tutorial over on my Patreon and Art Membership site. It’s aimed at those who are very new to coloured pencils using budget pencils and budget paper so we are keeping it simple. 🥰
Is the bockingford hot pressed watercolour paper same as strathmore Bristol 300 vellum for texture
I don’t know as I’ve not used the Bristol 300 vellum.
How or where can I get the butterfly image that she's starting with?
The link is in the description of the video! 😊

Why do you use watercolour paper to use coloured pencils and are arteza colour any good
I find that a Hot Pressed watercolour paper has a nice amount of texture to be able to apply lots of layers and still add plenty of details where needed. I usually use Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Watercolour paper but I will also use Clairefontaine Pastelmat and Drafting Film for coloured pencil work too. The Arteza pencils are okay for a budget set of pencils. I wouldn't swap my Faber Castell, Caran D'Ache or Derwent pencils for them but as a budget set of pencils I found them to be quite nice to work with and produced some nice results on the softer surfaced hot press paper like the Bockingford paper that I used in this video. Hope this helps! :)
Have you tried arches watercolour hot pressed with these pencils i have this paper would would these pencils work on that paper
I have Arches HP paper but haven’t done a drawing with the Arteza pencils on it. I’ve just tested a couple of the pencils from the set on a piece of the paper and yes, I think they would work fine. They blended well. Hope this helps!
@@TERESAJOYFINEART how much texture is there in the bockingford hot pressed watercolour paper
