You have to admit this game was mind blowing, being created by a 19 year old Richard Garriot that included a grid-based graphical over world, 1st person underworld, and a "space sim" all in one game at a time when CRPG's were mainly text only, and most people played their games on the Atari. I think the marriage between Tolkein and Star Wars was an added bonus :)
@@f4rhodesia273 The lack of a movie is a BETRAYAL! Seriously though - I'd love to see some new counter monkey or RPG deep dive from him. but that will never happen and I've made peace with that.
I LOVE that the "Definately not familiar in any way" actually got context in Ultima SEVEN! There is a crashed Kilrathi starfighter in some random guy's farm in Ultima VII, which the farmer knows who the Kilrathi from WING COMMANDER is! Which means the ultimate is not only canon with the wing Commander series, but those are the actual Fighters you are fighting in this game! I’ve never played this but have watched half a dozen reviews of it from different people. Fun seeing the range of takes on it, from the more humorous ones like Spoony to the more scholarly ones. Great work Finntrovert!
I legit have no idea why this popped in my feed(Actually it was part 8's video), but as a fan of old game retrospectives, even ones I never played, I decided why not. I've seen both the SpoonyOne's old reviews/looks at these, as well as a lets play series of the two seventh games by a guy here on youtube, so I'm aware of the series tropes going into them. For that, you take a far different approach to those I've seen on this one, beginning with the acknowledgement that this is not a series many people CAN get into nowadays. It has the Seinfeld is Unfunny problem, where it had a HUGE impact on the gaming landscape, one of those seminal works that simply is a bit too outdated to be fun for a modern audience. Still, you present the stuff really well, going into a lot of details that others leave out, like what the other ships on the space station are for, and doing some jabs at some of the designs by this developer. It's a very good, and well put together video, and thank you for making it.
Thank you! I was hoping I was making something that wasn't "just the same", and would express my opinions and intent in a way that is interesting to more people than just me. Very happy that these videos have been received as well as they have.
I’ve never played any Ultima games (being completely unaware of them at the time). I would LOVE if some crazy developer decides to remake them all into one package for me 😂❤
It would be great, but it's unfortunately unlikely to happen. According to Lord British himself, the rights are in a weird limbo where no single entity has the rights to all parts of the franchise, meaning it's really difficult to try and create anything new Ultima, or remake the old. A massive shame.
Thank you for watching! That is a very relatable feeling, I started streaming and doing these videos to give myself an excuse to actually play more games. Damned real life obligations, right? XD
I played Ultima I on my Apple //c. I remember on the intro screen, sometimes a car would drive up to the castle and a garage door would open up and let the car drive in.
Found your channel when looking up Ultima Underworld 2! Decided to pause and start all the way back a 2! Love to hear perspectives on games. I have yet to play them all, but this would be a good start to listen in! I know of the games from Spoony so I wanted to hear more expansion on it all!
Thanks! I'm so glad people have found these videos, as I think Ultima is definitely a series that deserves more love than it gets these days. After over two decades of it being basically dead, so many people don't even know of it, or its importance in video gaming history.
I was lied. I was told this is a great game. No matter, I want to play the series one day, for more than last 35 years I have wanted to do so. Maybe one day...Akalabeth I have at least finished.
It all depends on the perspective. Is Ultima great? As a piece of history, sure. Back in the day it was revolutionary and paved way for an entire genre. Is it fun to play today? Only if you enjoy the game in the historical context, since by today's standards it's very basic.
Ultima III was my first exposure into the series but I was too young to understand what was going on (I was 5 or 6 at the time). By the time Ultima IV came out, I was older and was able to beat it. After that I lost interest and played Space Quest and Kings Quest. My brother was the one that played the rest of the Ultima games.
I am kind of glad I never really got into these games as a kid. I feel like now, as I am older, and have a better grasp of English, I was able to enjoy these more than I would have when they were new.
I was born in 95' , my father had a gf in my younger years who was a huge Ultima fan so when she started playing ultima online I watched all the time, later when Runescape became popular I would always say " it's just a free to play copycat of ultima online" because back then Ultima online was EXPENSIVE
I really enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to watch the rest of the retrospective! Are there any other old game series that you'd be interested in making videos on?
Thank you! I've been enjoying making these, and I'm glad to hear people have enjoyed watching them as well. As for other older game series I'm interested in making videos about. Yeah, there are some, but I don't have any set in stone plans yet. Ultima, for me, was never a series I was acquainted with when it was actually new. Played Ultima Online, yes, and Ultima VIII was the only one I played when it was recently released. But even when I played the series on stream some two years ago, this series really hit me, so I decided this must be where I begin. Where this goes when I finally finish this series? Not sure. There are many games and series I hold dear, including many adventure game series, Legacy of Kain, and so on.
@@malkav616 Ooh, you're right, there are a bunch of SSI games I've never touched before. Might need to consider adding some to my ever growing list of games to play.
Good question, and the answer is simple and probably unsatisfying. I started this series on a whim after Born Punk was released, and I lost a creative outlet to channel my energies in. I had thought about making these videos for some two years, ever since I played the main game series on stream, and when I finally decided to start making these videos I used that stream plan as a template for what to make videos of. And Akalabeth I didn't have in that list, even though I know it's a proto-Ultima game.
@@finntrovert There is also the fact that Akalabeth is at best a tech demo for Ultima I and has no impact on the series beyond lending some names and a gameplay loop.
