I’d be nervous buying an even lightly modded WRX. So many kids rice these things out, and who knows what kind of beating the engine, clutch, and brakes have taken? This one looks nice, but I’d still be leery.
It’s a gamble to go used. I got my 17 WRX certified pre owned. A couple months later the clutch poops out on me and had axles seals leaking. It looked fine from the factory and I attributed the stiff clutch to just being a sports car. It wasn’t until I test drove a wrx a few months down the line that I found the clutch was shot. This one he is reviewing has some induction noises which are much louder than stock which leads me to think it has some type of after market air intake/bpv/air filter. Was probably modded and then returned to stock to sell 🤷♂️

At the end of the day, ALL used cars will need repairs. The biggest thing with a turbo-charged car is who owned it and how it was maintained. I'd personally never buy a WRX or STi used from a dealer. I've looked at 10+ WRX or STi's at dealers and they either needed a ton of work or were way over priced like "The Drake" pointed out. There are plenty of private sellers with good reputations deep in Facebook or Subaru forums. Just takes time and patience.
I bought a used 2016 WRX Premium with 23k miles. I am at 45k right now and the only issue I encountered was the notorious throw out bearing noise. Subaru quoted me for 14 hours of labor plus parts... Went to a performance shop and did it for a 3rd of the price. Other than that it has been amazing to me thus far. These WRX's with the FA20's are STUPID reliable, the ones you hear most about have been tinkered with. Check for proper maintenance, service history, if all is clean and you want to keep it stock for a while, go buy that used WRX right now!!
These earlier models have a better looking front end than the current models. The earlier models have a colored matched bumper where as the current models just have a black grill opening by the bumper

Yes, it's a bad idea unless you personally know the owner or have the car referred by a reliable source. These cars get beat on and frequently the owners skip expensive maintenance. Same with any BMW "M" (especially M3's), GTI's...and probably Honda Civic R's.
Whoever installed the short throw shifter man; that was the longest thing I've ever done on the wrx. Compared to the STI, the short throw shifter change was a breeze, the WRX' was made to give you headaches to swap out
Update: I bought a used 2016 WRX with 24k miles in 2017. I still have it. 132k miles now and all stock. Only issue I had was rebuilding the AC, everything else is standard maintenance. Im also a conservative driver. Being my first subie, I have to say it’s been solid
drive these all the time at the dealership I work at. they're great cars now that the head gasket issue has been resolved. the only complaints I have with them is that the shifter feel is horrendous (compared to the sti) and they tend to surge more than any other turbo engine I've ever driven
Raiti is doing God's work. Everyone beats the shit out of these cars and then puts the car back to stock before selling. My buddy bought a 2016 with 18k miles and the engine fell apart shortly after lol.
The thing I worry about with these used turbo cars is how reliable it’s gonna stay down the line. Most of the time you never know how the previous owner treated it and I just worry about ware and tear on the turbo

Good vid BUT I think cautioning people who don't know that a modded one can be trouble (if not done right or with good parts) would of been a good idea
@@AJMILLER91 I hear you about that, and certain cars like this I would get the 6 speed even if I prefer an automatic. The most reliable CVTs are probably the ones in the new Corolla SE/XSE and Civic Sport models, but the performance models like the Si and Type R have only 6 Speeds, which are also available in those Corollas and Civics now.
Sinatra XCI well with a car like this why would you even consider the automatic. Those who do probably don’t care if it’s cut or 8 speed. But truly a car like this, you go for the manual.
If you want the real experience you have to buy a used one any Subaru made after 2007 is not a Subaru you have to see them in person to really understand and you need to find an old one owned by a good owner that knows what these things are
Cars to avoid used: GTI, WRX, Golf R, S3, Focus RS, Focus ST, Civic Si, Civic R, Evo. Any car that is quick, relatively cheap, and easy to tune draws the attention of those who tend to beat the heck out of a car and tune them to the point where one doesn't know how reliable it will be. The exception is if you know who owned it and how they treated it. If you can't afford a new one, you probably can't afford the upkeep of a used one. I wouldn't touch a used one but think they would be nice to own new.
I have been a tech for 23 years and 7 months ago I starting working at a Subaru dealer and I am amazed by how many blown and or leaking engine I see getting pulled resealed and or replaced. If its modified at all, walk away!
part of the problem was getting the wrx to pass emissions and what they may have to be down the road. To be honest it was a tossup between the Subaru Impreza RS vs the 2000 Honda civic si
I'm considering a 5th Gen WRX after selling my '11 e90 M3. I'm also considering a mk6 or mk7 GTI or GLI, but I like the idea of AWD and Subaru reliability.
I love it Joe. I can't get enough videos about my favorite car brand. I'm looking forward to you doing a video on a 2015 ForesterXT Touring. thanks Joe!

And you were reviewing my dream superhero car called the Catmobile which is related to a dodge charger but even better. And my Guards were watching your surroundings while filming. It was pretty cool though.
Joe, this is nice, with a good price for used, and seems to be in good condition with just the right additions. Many good points with all the comments. If I got an WRX, I would not mind one fixed up just like this, but in midnight blue. With some of the Subarus without the premium stereo, the Rockford Fosgate processor, amp and speaker upgrade is an available OEM accessory. I would get this on the 6 Speed over the CVT, which it harder to find, the opposite for the Corolla and Civic. I would not thrash and abuse it, so the longevity, reliability should not be such a problem, like an STi with many drivers, especially if the boost and compression is molded. Subaru has among the best AWD systems, aside from and durability problems the other negative factor is having replacing all four tires if one needs replacing. But those tires are still good to be used on non AWD cars if you can match them with tires of close tread wear. The WRX is great for people like me that don't need and want the extra performance and price of the Sti, but wants sporty, but subdued and low key. The STi OEM exhaust and shorter, short throw shifter is perfect. Bomba racing make some nice stuff for the Honda Civics, and other cars. I would also prefer the keyed ignition if available with the options I want, but on the Corolla, it only cones with pushbutton start with the options.
After market blow off valve instead of recirculating valve. Hope it's tuned for it but likely not. Previous owner probably had an Access Port hooked to it and unmarried it before trading it in.
To me the answer is a clear no. A used WRX on autotrader in my area goes for 22 to 24 thousand. A new WRX is listed at 27,695 dollars. 90% of WRX drivers have a heavy foot. If you can't afford the extra 5-6 you should not be driving this car.
Coming from someone that bought a used 15 Subaru imma have to be brutally honest with you guys. Dont buy one if you dont have the money to buy another one. The quality over time is by far the worst thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Transmission and a/c being the main problem. Engine had been good to me because i do my maintenance, but im pretty sure if i had modded it i would have already had a new engine in. I would advise yall to get a Veloster N, type r or 5.0
As a subaru master tech, yes avoid, 9 times out of 10 the rear end is turned to mush cus "Launch" bro, however, there are FEW that are in decent price but its stupid expensive , if you want to buy a used one, PLEASE get the extended warranty
Yes, but more so the STi. A WRX owner may be an enthusiast that just likes to drive, but not like a maniac. This looks in excellent condition and minimal, mods. Factory performance exhaust and shifter, not engine, turbo boost and compression mods and such. But always have a good mechanic check it out.
@@johnsonjacob3525 Not saying it is a given that a used performance car has issues. Some are taken care of. Just saying if you buy one, be sure to do a good inspection. Especially for mods that haven't been done correctly.
JERKY RIDE...it's the turbo and Subaru tuning I haven't gotten used to. 1 year in, I've managed to temper the rocket like take offs, but every once in a while that beast of an engine will bolt like a horse. When you figure out what just happened the sweats will overwhelm you. Just make sure your GPS is updated and know your local speed traps. But just in case, keep a coupla grand in savings as a contingency plan. For the tickets and impound fees.
Before buying, check the Carfax. Did it have any accidents reported and service record. Was the 6 speed manual abused by the previous owner(s)? Is it leaking any fluids? I'm in the market but leaning towards a new WRX. Thank you Joe for the well done video.

Whoever installed the short throw shifter man; that was the longest thing I've ever done on the wrx. Compared to the STI, the short throw shifter change was a breeze, the WRX' was made to give you headaches to swap out
I have a 2019, sport tech... I love it!
This is my best winter car ever! Love snow days 😁 it's a really fun car to drive!
I just bought a used 2016 wrx premium, and did a bumper swap for a 2018 wrx. Looks great! 😁
Nicely done Rusty! Now nobody is the wiser1
how much was the bumper i just got a 2016 as well
Update: I bought a used 2016 WRX with 24k miles in 2017.
Thanks for that great input Ryan!
What year is reliable with the gasket issue fixed?
Raiti is doing God's work. Everyone beats the shit out of these cars and then puts the car back to stock before selling. My buddy bought a 2016 with 18k miles and the engine fell apart shortly after lol.
Raiti made me love WRXs
I am so glad that I can share my car passion with you!
The thing I worry about with these used turbo cars is how reliable it’s gonna stay down the line. Most of the time you never know how the previous owner treated it and I just worry about ware and tear on the turbo
*watches while recently purchasing a used WRX in this trim, transmission and colour*
As long as its got a good warranty i would send it on any wrx. You know this, I know this, and the type RA knows this.
Good call!

Oh wow that is awesome Fred!
I’m a confirmed broke boy and I’m sick of dealing with old used cars breaking down on me. I’m in the process of getting a car loan to hopefully buy a sti as a family car. I’ve always been a fan of the Subaru wrx and my kids would enjoy this vehicle. My wife not so much
Good vid BUT I think cautioning people who don't know that a modded one can be trouble (if not done right or with good parts) would of been a good idea
Very good point!
It's a hit or miss honestly especially with that bs CVT ,should've just been a 8 speed
Doesn’t have a CVT. Didn’t you watch the video? SMH
@@LS1007 I'm talking about the automatic transmission my dude that's why I said especially with that cvt the manual is a six speed I'm aware
@@johnsonjacob3525 I totally agree with you like it's a performance car and those transmissions can't handle too much power but the SI is pretty nice
Sinatra XCI well with a car like this why would you even consider the automatic. Those who do probably don’t care if it’s cut or 8 speed. But truly a car like this, you go for the manual.
If you want the real experience you have to buy a used one any Subaru made after 2007 is not a Subaru you have to see them in person to really understand and you need to find an old one owned by a good owner that knows what these things are
That is a very good point Bob!
Love all the subaru videos!
I am so glad that I can share them with you!
Bought a 2011 did the timing belt and Its amazing and reliable had it for a little over a year
How many miles it had?
@@ocho552 89k when I got it 129k now
Cars to avoid used: GTI, WRX, Golf R, S3, Focus RS, Focus ST, Civic Si, Civic R, Evo.
Thanks for sharing that great input and perspective Matthew.
Not crazy about the current WRX/STi body but it's still a Subaru so I have some love for it. Just prefer the GD chassis. Great job as always, Joe.
I have been a tech for 23 years and 7 months ago I starting working at a Subaru dealer and I am amazed by how many blown and or leaking engine I see getting pulled resealed and or replaced. If its modified at all, walk away!
which ones and years have you seen the most

@@stellantistom6881 thanks Tom, guess I need to do more research!
part of the problem was getting the wrx to pass emissions and what they may have to be down the road. To be honest it was a tossup between the Subaru Impreza RS vs the 2000 Honda civic si
That exhaust sounds great.
I'm considering a 5th Gen WRX after selling my '11 e90 M3. I'm also considering a mk6 or mk7 GTI or GLI, but I like the idea of AWD and Subaru reliability.
Buy a 2018+. The 2015-2017 front end is quite ugly in comparison.
You can just upgrade the bumper and save a good amount of money if that's an issue.

I'm an artist and I made my own 4 characters which is me, my two Guards called Hellcats, and my pet female cat Gnocchi like on my profile. And you were reviewing my dream superhero car called the Catmobile which is related to a dodge charger but even better. And my Guards were watching your surroundings while filming. It was pretty cool though.
Very cool man!
Never been this early, got my snacks ready!
Thanks man!
Got the twinkies and jolly ranchers ready!
It's awesome you are reviewing a WRX surrounded by Mustangs. I like the WRX, but feel they haven't evolved as much as you would expect.
I would advise yall to get a Veloster N, type r or 5.0
I appreciate you sharing your perspective from your experience!
Where is the part where he talks about if it bad to buy a used WRX? He just goes over features.
As a subaru master tech, yes avoid, 9 times out of 10 the rear end is turned to mush cus "Launch" bro, however, there are FEW that are in decent price but its stupid expensive , if you want to buy a used one, PLEASE get the extended warranty
Thanks for sharing that great input and perspective from your experience!

My only gripe about the +15 WRX is the non-smooth turbo feel with the stock tune.
I totally agree with you!
I love your Content but the unnew car is a dandy. But this non-new Subaru is nice WRX and it's an unnew vehicle.
So sad we don't have this model in Europe 😢
I totally agree with you!
I loved how when the clutch was pointed out he pressed on the brake. Lmfao! Might have been in error, but it was funny.

I would avoid all those types of cars used.
Most, if not all are usually Riced out and modified.
Since you are always at walker ford you should do a review on the Ford ecosport
You got it!
Looking like a real Baby Driver there Joe
You have to be cautious about buying any used performance car. Buyers don't buy performance cars to drive them gently like a Sunday cruise.
When a newer car is traded other than where purchased it generally signals trouble with the car.
2016s don’t have the LED DRLs in the headlight ‘C light’, the + 2018 do.
Very well done Frank! Great info!
