im Swedish and in our schools are we thought that the vikings started raiding because of the trading men that came from the south invited them to differnt parts of europe but later on they relised that why trade when you can take and when they returned with loot other vikings started doing the same
Here in Iceland we learned that going on a víking is no more than travelling - and that our ancestors were much more in line with explorers/fortune seekers than raiders. Iceland was settled by those on víkings, some of them went further west. So "Vikings" really are just travellers. Some stay where they went, some go back - and they did it because they could.
@@HistoryHouseProductions The first vikings coming to Greenland did some marketing by calling it Greenland. Greenland is cold. Polar bears live on Greenland. I have read that Greenland had a warm period during the Viking age and then got colder. There must be a big difference between the south and the north.
Dano-Frankish war, might also have been importent and then invention of new shipbuilding techniques. The idea that the oldest son inheritance everything also came latter.
Yeah, the Danish-Frankish war was definitely a factor. The shipbuilding technology was actually good enough for raiding centuries before the Viking Age though.
Scandinavians started using sails relative late. There is some problems with dating, but it is generally assumed that you first start seeing sails on the type of ships that would latter become ocean going in the late 6th or early 7th century, but as far as I know the first ocean sailing ships found are the Askekarr, which seems to point to the first ocean going ships being from the late 8th century, with knarrs and longships first being build in the 9th century.
Yes, there was trade before the viking age, but for all we know the ships conducting this trade sailed only with oars. It is odd, but we have found no early sails, or ships with masts. Now we could just have been unlucky with our aercheological finds, but Tacitus actuelly mentions in his work “Germania” that the Swedes doesn’t use sails, but only oars.
In Iceland we learn that Vikings left for Iceland because at that time Norway United and they left because it was tyrannical, they also left because there was shortage of land and Vikings like places that have lots of land like England and Iceland at that time. As another example for the second one: Sven fails to mate in his town, goes to britain, burns a local church and kidnaps a woman who will be hisnfuture happy wife
I have a question about the second theory. Recent DNA evidence shows that both men and women sailed abroad. Does this change your view on the matter? Source: www.history.com/news/women-also-set-sail-on-viking-age-voyages-study-shows
Heres a well documented scientific explanation for you... The Scandinavians had worked as mecenaries for centuries BEFORE the viking age. The Romans and many others used to hire bands of Scandinavians to fight their wars- and thus making many a Dane very very rich and very very good at fighting. However this practise dried up with the collapse of the Roman Empire, forcing the Scandinavians to use their skills elsewhere. Remember, that England got hit a lot in the 500-600 era too. Then around 600 (probably) the Viking ship technology matured enough, that the Danes didnt had to rely on the old "road of armies" stretching from Skagen to Northern Germany and beyond (passing the Danevirke)- Instead you could go everywhere faster and more reliable than anybody else. Combine this with a lot of weak neighbors, and you have the perfect buisness model!! In Denmark we have found buried treasures from the viking era EVERY SINGLE YEAR FOR THE LAST HUNDRED YEARS! -Not kidding, look it up... Dont buy the story that "the viking age began with the attack on Lindisfarne", thats bullshit. That is just the first well documented attack.
