Fun Fact: During LBJ’s announcement, the planes original name was the RS-71 but he made a mistake and called it the SR-71. Due to them not wanting to correct the presidents mistake, they decided to just change the name and it obviously stuck.

@@yednggivh4292 yes, the a-12 was the precursor to the sr-71. they are effectively the same, the sr-71 is just longer, can carry more fuel, and more camera space/better cameras. also, the a-12 lasted one year before it was retired and the yf-12 and sr-71 were their replacements. the sr-71 is the one we all know, the surveillance one, while the yf-12 was designed to be an interceptor with missiles, but it was cancelled and only 3 prototypes were made.

I actually wasn't a big fan of Black Ops after my playthrough. But after this edit, I realized that Black Ops is the only shooter that got a mission with the Blackbird. This tells me two things, either we are missing some Cold War era shooters or Black Ops was the best at it.

I saw the one on display at the kalamazoo air meuseum and its truely one of the jets of all time. Cold war jets are dope esspecially the spy plane. Ita a cold war high altitude high speed spyplane. The photos that came out from the era are insane truely a vibe. The cia in its prime had one. Nasa had one. You cant make this stuff up
Heard the Blackbird was the only jet-powered aircraft rated to run full afterburner for its entire flight duration. Crazy stuff.
Not full time but very prolonged more so then any other engine. Every mission it had to do an in flight fuel refill.
Yes, but also no. It did run in afterburner the entire time it was supersonic, and for long distances. However, that afterburner was adjustable, as it was now basically an air breathing, throttled rocket. Full afterburner on most of the planes for too long would have damaged the engines, so full afterburner was only used when fired at... Which admittedly it has been said the planes were fired at several times, so I can bet they saw way more full burner than intended. And apparently there was one SR-71 that was regularly faster than the others, that said the A-12 made for the C.I.A. was faster than any of the SR-71s. The A-12 being smaller and lighter being the reason why they were faster than the SR-71s. However, we may never know how fast any of these planes went for real because it seems a lot of their capabilities are still not truly known to the public. And the best way to release secret information is to include the most misinformation you can.
You have probably heard the "Speed Check" story but another fun story by that same pilot was about the time he flew it at the SLOWEST speed he could. He had been requested to do a flyby at an airbase in the UK but couldn't find it in the fog. Suddenly realized he was going too slow so he threw on the afterburners as he ended up finding the tower and everyone waiting for the flyby just saw this titanium monster come out of the fog blasting fire and noise.😅😂

This thing was so fast that to compensate the metal deformation due to friction heating, they were forced to let some gaps between metal plates which would creates some leaks when the plane was on ground
