Wow this is just what I was searching for! I want to make a flower petal skirt for a fairy outfit based on morning glories. My plan was to just do a controlled ombre with some cotton lawn fabric but I know there are lighter stripes that continue from white part of the petal to the ends and I was trying to figure out how to get them on the fabric without sewing them in to maintain the illusion of the wrap skirt was made out of a morning glory. This is just the trick
I would love trying batiking using glue. However, I liked cracking the batiked area so some color gets through. I noticed that the fabric, altho all scrunched up before being put in the dye, showed no signs of cracks. Is the dried glue to pliable for cracking?
Hi Von, The glue used here (Scotch Quick Dry Tacky Adhesive) didn't crack when dyeing, but after being in the hot dye bath then cold water to rinse, it became more brittle and started to crack then. Maybe if you put it in hot then cold water before dyeing, it would be more likely to crack. The most popular type of glue for this, Elmers School Glue Gel, will not crack, it will just wash off. This makes it much easier to remove than the glue here, but you would be more likely to get the look you want with this Scotch glue. There may be other glues that will crack better, but I've only used the Elmers and Scotch.
Thank you for your tutorials. Question - I have a bright pink tye dye maxi dress. I'd like to tone down the bright pink, but don't want to lose the white circles. What technique would you recommend to dye the pink a darker color?
I might be too late with this suggestion but what about using the glue wherever you're white is then dying it? Very similar to how it was done in this video
The glue (Elmer's school glue) should probably have at least a couple hours to dry or else it might wash off too quickly. Ideally, it should be done in 2 sessions so the glue can dry. Maybe an hour would work with very thin lines of glue but I'm sure 2nd graders will do larger globs that will take a while to dry! Good luck, I hope it works out!
I can't make this work! I've tried 3 times with both transparent and white elmer's glue and nothing! Once I wash the fabric and let it dry the design just disappears.. the color gets into the glue parts.. what do you suppose I'm doing wrong? :/
Hmmm, I'm not sure. I assume you're letting the glue dry thoroughly before dyeing? I've noticed in parts where the glue is put on thinner, the color comes through more compared to where it is put on thickly. What material are you using? Some fabrics might not absorb the glue enough to block the color. The glue is still on when you take it out of the dye, right? It's not dissolving or washing off while it's still in the dye? I don't know if the particular color of dye could make a difference. Otherwise, I don't know. I've had success with all the Elmer's craft glues, but I found the blue gel worked the best.
We don't think it would work very well because hot glue tends to stay on the surface of the fabric. Elmer's glue soaks down into the fabric more which makes it resist the dye better. If anyone has had success with hot glue, let us know!
Oh no! If you dyed it a light color or took it out of the dye when the glue came off, you could rinse and dry the fabric, reapply glue, and try a darker version of the color if possible. Elmer's school glue, especially the blue gel variety has worked best for me. Make sure the glue is completely dry before dyeing. Also agitate the fabric very gently. If you did all these things the first time, sorry, I haven't see that happen before! You may want to do a test on a scrap of fabric if you try again.
+Diana Clarke Yes, Elmer's glue works well. I've tested different kinds of Elmer's and found the Elmer's Gel Glue works the best. The regular white kind also works, but I've found it comes off a little easier so you have to be a little careful when it's in the dye to make sure the fabric doesn't rub together too much. With any Elmer's, it will rub off when rinsing and washing the fabric, so no need to peel it off like in the video!
Tamra Neblett I've never tried it, but I imagine it would work. I'd suggest testing it on a scrap first. I've tried several different washable glues and the one that works the best is Elmer's School Glue Gel. If you try the hot glue, we'd love to know how it turns out!
+PDP Grrr This particular glue didn't come off very well, but Elmer's School Glue Gel works great. It comes off while you rinse the fabric, so no need to peel it off!
Hey that's pretty rude, everyone has a personality and not everyone will have a personality to your liking. A comment like this might really upset someone even though you just move on.

How clever!!! I havent done batik since high school!! Might just try this method. TFS! Austin TX USA
Awesome! A sanity-saving craft to do, especially with everyone under 4 ft temporarily homeschooled these days
.. Thanks!

GREAT TUTORIAL...
You're welcome Judi, thanks for watching!
Good simple batik 👍👍
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Hello, good explaination. Thank you. has the other side also the drawing you've made with the glue?
I'm going to try this awesome technique. 😀
Great! Let us know how it turns out :)
So helpful. Thank you.
Genius, thank your awesome 🥰
super steady hand!!
This is soo easy and very beautiful i will also try this 😊😊
What glue was this? I'm from UK and unsure of this brand or style?
Hi Clara that's awesome 😊
Thank you!
Excellent idea.thank you.
You're welcome!
Would glue not melt from the hot water used for dying?
Excellent idea....can I do on silk or chiffon material?
Yes, this should work on silk or silk chiffon, but not polyester chiffon.

Awesome, This is an ancient Senegalese technique
its alot of work, i prefer to use the wax it comes off easily with the wax
What if I used the regular glue will it work fine, or will it turn into a good art??
It needs to be a washable glue in order for it to come off.
hi there! should I still soak for 10 minutes if I'm using the blue Elmer's gel glue? I am worried the glue will wash off. thanks!
Hi Serra, it should stay put just fine unless you really stir it really vigorously.
let the glue dry over night
Thank you for your tutorials. Question - I have a bright pink tye dye maxi dress. I'd like to tone down the bright pink, but don't want to lose the white circles. What technique would you recommend to dye the pink a darker color?
Sorry, I can't think of a way that you could keep the white parts white while dyeing the rest. Unless you're able to recreate the way it was tie dyed.
Bethany Hager shobori knots
Bethany Hager over where the white is you could put plastic over the knot to protect the white
I might be too late with this suggestion but what about using the glue wherever you're white is then dying it? Very similar to how it was done in this video
Thank you
Amazing
Will it work on cotton cloth n which glue to use
Would this dying technique work with the rit dye more because I'd like it dye a cotton polyester blend?
Hi Emma, I haven't tried it with Rit More, but it should work.
How long does the glue take to dry? I want to try this with my 2nd grade class but I only have one hour!

But on our school in philippines to do the batik we need bottle sprayer, glue news, paper and a white t-shirt.
Hello, do you know if this method works when dyeing on silk fabric with silk dyes?
Hi Alicia, I haven't tried it with silk and different dyes, so I can't speak to the effectiveness of the technique with other materials.
My thoughts exactly...
I saw one person use the Clear Elmer's Glue...
and it worked great.. being sure to let it dry
over night... then dye it.
Hi Alicia!! did it work on silk? Because I want to try it!
Hey what does the term "resist technique" means
The wax effectively "resists" the dye, so that is what we are referring to!
Cute! 🤓

Let the Glue Dry for at least 12 hours...
or over night..
how long will it take to dry the glue?
Hi Abby, it takes a couple of hours depending on how thick the glue is.
Will it work with a normal glue?
Hi Abbey, As long as it's washable. Elmer's glue (white or blue gel) works best.
Hii is it okay to use hot glue gun instead of the elmer's glue?? Thankyouu
We don't think it would work very well because hot glue tends to stay on the surface of the fabric. Elmer's glue soaks down into the fabric more which makes it resist the dye better. If anyone has had success with hot glue, let us know!
the glue came off as soon as i sipped the fabric in hot water, what should o do????

Did you let it (the glue) dry for at least
12 hours... to 24 hours is best...
I usually do just over night.
Does Elmer's gel glue work with this technique?

Instead of glue wax can be used ?
Yes, hot wax can be used, although the process may be a little different.
OnlineFabricStore.net Thank u Clara .Can u pl explain batik process using hot wax?
Which glue u use
Use a washable craft glue
Could this work with hot glue?
Tamra Neblett I've never tried it, but I imagine it would work. I'd suggest testing it on a scrap first. I've tried several different washable glues and the one that works the best is Elmer's School Glue Gel. If you try the hot glue, we'd love to know how it turns out!
I need the name of the glue
We used Elmer's glue. But it doesn't totally matter what type you use as long as it is washable.
con la que haces el dibujo
hola la botella que es .....
figueroa puri This is the pen I used: www.onlinefabricstore.net/dritz-dual-tipped-marking-pen-blue-and-purple-.htm
This looks like even MORE of a pain than using wax!
+PDP Grrr This particular glue didn't come off very well, but Elmer's School Glue Gel works great. It comes off while you rinse the fabric, so no need to peel it off!
Good to know, thanks.
je to škaredé
Picking off all that glue doesn’t appeal to my patience sticking with wax !
In other comments she says to use washable Elmer's glue and just make sure to not stir it too much while dyeing.
Really? This is easier ... peeling off all that glue?
lots of great ideas from this channel, just wish she had a bit more personality...
Hey that's pretty rude, everyone has a personality and not everyone will have a personality to your liking. A comment like this might really upset someone even though you just move on.
Which type of Elmer's glue would work best for this project?
We recommend using one that is white in color so it does not stain the fabric and it just needs to be washable.
how long did you wait for the glue to dry ?
Hi Nurin, it depends on the glue you use, but a couple hours should be fine.
OnlineFabricStore.net alrighty! Thank you! Can’t wait to try it out!
