    I do enjoy the recent registration of Rivers by Epica/Simone Simons with the strings band Apocalyptica. You can see that this is more recent than the Sancta Terra with Floor Jansen, as the keyboard player Coen Janssen has lost all his hair. As you can guess, in Belgium and the Netherlands the surname Jansen, Janssen, Janssens, is very common. I guess like Smith and Jones in USA 🙂. The concert is in Paris, France, so cool that about 6:15 in your reaction the keyboard player makes a small musical reference to the French national hymn.

    I've been listening since their second album, coming up on 20 years now.
    I would recommend "Unleashed" (The official Video).
    That's a very popular one, and will draw more interest than some of their lesser known (but still incredible) songs. People don't mention it in recommendations, but mostly because it's such an obvious choice, it almost doesn't need to be mentioned. If you're fishing for views, that's the song that will get them. "Rivers" or "Code of Life" would be close runners up.
    For a live performance, I like what they did with "Storm the Sorrow" during the 2014 Pinkpop acoustic session. That's usually a harder, more aggressive song, but they made it sound like a jazz/lounge-act style. Simone's voice really shines through. But another thing you'll notice, the timing on the rhythm guitars is flawless, like down to the nanosecond, lol. When the guitars are fast and grindy, and you're just crunching on it, that covers a lot of mistakes. If you want to see technical ability, you often have to slow it down. So this version can be easily compared to the normal faster version, and it makes it easier to appreciate the precision. It's not the most complicated guitar piece ever written or anything like that, I'm speaking purely about timing. These guys have an internal metronome that would make a Swiss time piece jealous, lol. The vocals also stumble a bit, it's not flawless, but she recovers so gracefully and those little flaws actually bring more character and authenticity to the song. You can tell she's used to singing it a lot faster and more powerfully, but she adapts very well. If you want to do a technical analysis on the band, this is the song to look at, because it's not perfect, but still very impressive. That'll give you a better picture of what they can do.
    For fun songs... I love "Universal Death Squad". It's not their "best" song from a compositional standpoint, nor is it the most popular, but it's just enjoyable to listen to, and a good overall representation of the band. And of course, "Solitary Ground" and "Mother of Light" are the tracks that first hooked me on the band. The live recordings are better in the latter two cases.
    Epica is a "Must See Live" band, and if you get one of the now rare chances to see them in a smaller venue, that's even better than the big concerts. There are very few bands I consider "Must See Live", so they're up there with Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Faith No More, The Rolling Stones, Nightwish and AC/DC. It's a pretty exclusive list. But the experience of being there takes it to a different level entirely. It's hard to explain, but most bands very quickly become road-weary, and just don't want to be there. They put on a good act and knuckle-under for the sake of the show, but that's it. Epica however, their concerts have a great vibe, like they truly love performing and want to engage with the audience. When you watch them play, even between songs, you see humans at their best, lol. I'm sure there's some behind the scenes drama, there always is... but when they take the stage, you get the sense there's no place else they'd rather be than here and now. It's really cool.

      @@TheWolffAndTheMelody OK, this is an opportunity for you to do a so-called "double reaction", which means 2 songs in just 1 reaction video. More specifically, 2 versions of the same song. Since Arkryal mentioned "Storm the Sorrow", I would suggest to react to the original (2012) metal version from their 5th studio album, and then the acoustic version from Pinkpop 2014. The melody of this song is really beautiful and catchy, but many Epica fans don't appreciate it as much, simply because the song is more mainstream-friendly.
      Also, the music video for the original metal version is not just a CGI. Simone was really all covered in the black paint and slime. She had terrible muscle aches the day after filming, from all the silicone bands pulling her arms and legs. She said it was her dirtiest but most fun filming. 🙂

    Love Epica, the contrast between her angelic vocals and the growls always hits. The epic, the soft, and the death metal style are a great blend on their albums. Others have recommended it, I concur "The Essence of Silence" goes hard. When you're ready for a long track (13 min iirc), check out "Kingdom of Heaven pt3." from Omega Live. Everyone gets a chance to shine and the stage show is epic. I've been listening to these guys since their first album came out like 20 years ago.

    There are two other songs from the same concert.
    Dancing in a Hurricane features Simone singing mostly in her rich lower register so gives you an idea of her versatility and then Beyond the Matrix when the band, Simone included, manage to get a cardio workout into the performance for good measure (Arien on drums is excused for obvious reasons). Both songs feature really heavy breakdowns which provide a stark contrast to the rest of the song.

    Yes, now you understand that this is not “Sancta terra” at all ha-ha 😁 I don’t want to say that Sancta terra is some kind of bad song, but it doesn’t say much about this band 😁 I thought that you would like heavy material. As you can see, the band has its own special epic sound, their instrumental parts along with the choir often sound like an epic movie soundtrack. As for recommendations, I will join this:

    Loved your reaction. Felt the exact same way first time listening to this song. Among many great and wonderful songs from epica that I'm sure many people will recommend, I would like to suggest one that I'm pretty sure no one will. It's called The Divine Conspiracy from the album "The Divine Conspiracy". I was even more shocked than when I first heard Consign to Oblivion. It's quite heavy though no that much in the vocal area as much for the musical one, while being especially symphonic. Even if you don't react to that (even though I would love to see it), give it a listen, preferably on it's studio version. It has a nicer souble bass. It is quite....Epic.

      This song was written mainly by Epica drummer and it also has a nice contrast between Mark and Simone. This is called "beauty and the beast", a concept that originated in Gothic metal.
      Make sure you keep reacting to them. Epica is not a band with just 2-3 big hits. They have dozens of amazing songs across their 8 full studio albums and a few EPs.

    This is such a fun band to see live and if you want to laugh just watch the keyboardist, he is always pulling the crazy shit. So this song is one of three songs that they close every concert with, they play the three songs as long as the audiance jumps along with Beyond The Matrix, sings along with Cry For The Moon and they want to see 3 different moshpits during this song. When I went to see them for a second time this song was where I went into my first moshpit, my friend held my hand as we went because I was a little scared but I wanted to experience a moshpit. The first time I saw Epica it was purely because my favourite band (Blackbriar) opened for them. I have seen Blackbriar 5 times now and will see them a 6th time in September during their co headline tour with Ad Infinitum my other favourite band. For Blackbriar I would recommend Arms Of The Ocean or their new one Cicada. For Ad Infinitum I would recommend Marching On Versailles and Seth. Really for me Blackbriar and Ad Infinum are the perfect combo, Blackbriar's second album will also be released in september sadly a day after the concert and since I preordered the album I have no idea when that might arrive.

    Thank you for this reaction, this is a really high level band.
    I saw the below requests, all are good, but for Epica, choose the right video to increase the effect!
    If you do these songs, here are the "right" videos to take:
    The Essence of Silence => OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO
    Design your Univese => Retrospect
    Unleashed => Retrospect
    Kingdom of Heaven (part 1 or 3) => Omega Alive
    Globally: choose Omega Alive or Retrospect, and there will be no waste :)

    Loved the expression on your face! Jup, Epica is great. I saw you had your Floorgasm as well (Nightwish), there is more great stuff from Holland. Floor started out with After Forever, another great band! I bet you like Within Temptation and Delain as well, personally I adore Blackbriar as well. And then there is Anneke van Giersbergen (who started out with the Gathering and later solo and duets). So there you have some more Dutch names to try. And if you are at it, try some Italian as well, Lacuna Coil is great as well or Norwegian like Trail of Tears, Sirenia etc. Many lovely bands in this female fronted metal genre! Enjoy!

    You have no idea just how many great symphonic metal bands there are out there. Here's some more, Within Temptation, try Paradise, Therion, one of the originals, Visions of Atlantis,when you've listened to these, then we'll come up with some more. Unlike Nightwish, Epica's song writing involves the entire band in one role or another.

      For Within Temptation I have to go with the classic Ice Queen. Love the original music video. Also Sharon's gorgeous duet with Anneke van Giersbergen on Somewhere. Live from the Black Symphony concert with live orchestra on stage. My favorite Therion song is probably Siren of the Woods. They are the original symphonic metal group and very heavy on he symphonic. For Visions of Atlantis concur on Master the Hurricane but my favorite is Melancholy Angel. One of my favorite Tarja Nightwish songs that hardly ever gets reacted to is Forever Yours.

    Told you it was a harder song by Epica!
    I commend you for asking for suggestions for non-metal music. It's easy to fall into the trap of sticking to one genre -- probably because the requests come from the viewers, and the viewers arrive based on the RUclips algorithm, and the RUclips algorithm makes suggestions based on what you've already reacted to. Thus you also find reaction channels who only specialize in (by way of example) K-pop as well, even though they probably don't have any specific interest in K-pop -- they just see views racking up, and keep doing what seems to work.
    I have two suggestions, both bluesy, both rock, one of them is metal-adjacent, one of them is not:
    Metal-adjacent, but really traditional hard-rock, is the band Blues Pills from Sweden (with an American in the band, originally on bass, though he has moved over to guitar after the original guitarist, who was French, quit). Check out their song "Black Smoke", one of several live versions from before 2018 will do nicely!
    Not metal-adjacent: Joanne Shaw Taylor, British guitar virtuoso and wonderful singer. She lives in the States now. Look for her song "Watch 'em burn", specifically the version recorded live at "Oran-Mor" in Glasgow in Scotland. If such a long song is too much, look for "Diamonds in the dirt" from the same concert.

      @howlandgrowl 10 месяцев назад +2

      Not my cup of tea either, have tried and tried with Epica, all I hear is Simone's operatic voice (no idea what she's singing) and death growls. The music sounds good but put altogether, definitely not for me. I really cannot understand the comparison with Nightwish, you could walk down the street humming or whistling virtually all of Nightwish songs, how on earth could you do that with Epica? Probably a great band, with a massive following, just not for me

    • @cancelled_user
      @cancelled_user 10 месяцев назад +4

      Epica has lot of stuff which is something between Sancta Terra and Consign to Oblivion, in terms of heaviness. CtO is actually one of the very very few songs where there are more growls than Simone's vocals. In most other songs it's the other way around. Mostly Simone +choir and then some growls here and there, sometimes in only one section of the song.
      The song with least growls is "Guilty Demeanor", which literally has 2 seconds of growls in it. 😄 And then of course songs with zero growls such as "Unleashed" or "In All Conscience". Also don't forget about numerous wonderful ballads. Epica ballads are on another level, easily competing with best ballads ever written by any band in any genre.

      @@howlandgrowl You're welcome!
      Hell, of course you can hum Epica songs, and not only ballads! 🙂 Can you please confirm if you can see this post? As soon as you read this. Thanks!
      Best Epica album? That's a bit tricky question. 😂 They don't have any weak album and every single one contains several great songs. I don't really have a favourite Epica album. I can listen to any of them any day, without the need to skip any song. Originally a Nightwish fan, I couldn't do that even with Nightwish. Epica is indeed a phenomenal band, bud such a complex music can take more than one listen to actually get into it. This is not some primitive pop or hip-hop, as a metalhead you probably understand.
      You can get used to the "beauty and the beast" concept of vocals used by Epica. And don't forget about the choir, which can be considered a third voice or third character in their songs, with their own melodies and lyrics (often in Latin).
      Simone's soprano is gorgeous. Even if you don't understand all lyrics, just listen to that wonderful timbre (a.k.a. colour of her voice), feminine, warm, unique, especially on their debut album "The Phantom Agony" (2003). She's a true gem in metal. Btw, she often sings in her chest voice and mixed voice, much more often than pure operatic voice.
      Don't forget Epica also makes acoustic versions of some of their metal songs and ballads, which is a great thing.
      I'll give you some ballads in chronological order, OK? Not sure if youtube will show you my post, if it includes links...
      Starting from 2004 when Simone was just 19:
