I seriously love your channel. You have such a good delivery on these basic (yet sometimes overwhelming) topics and the whole aesthetic of your channel just rounds it up. I will look forward for any more content to come!
I just bought the Hercules Inpulse 300 for my 50th birthday, it has the beatmatching guide for beginners but the way you just explained it makes me not even want to use it because you simplified it & made it look easy. I haven't spent that much time on it yet, I'm listening to every tutorial I can so that when I go full hands on I'll have a greater understanding of what I'm doing. Being 50 I've been listening to house/techno/EDM music since it begun- back in the day they said "house music won't last" HA HA!! I've wanted to mix for decades- So glad I waited until the birth of the internet ! You've got a new subscriber! Any advice from one self-taught DJ to another audiophile who's passionate about learning the craft? I look forward to learning from your videos. If you've got seasoned DJ's complementing on your videos- I know I'm in the right place!
Hey man, i’ve never really got an answer to this, i can beatmatch, but i tend to rather just hit the beat sync button on my mixer and it has the same effect, is this wrong?
Training your ears to understand and hear when two tracks aren't perfectly beatmatched is what's more important when practicing and performing beatmatches. There is no shame I find in hitting the sync button (sometimes it can really save a trainwreck in a sticky situation) but relying solely on using sync limits yourself. Sync isn't perfect and there are times when the software doesn't not line two tracks together perfectly and things can sound off. Dj software today is very good at aligning the beat grid to the song but with that small area left to improve I still need to adjust manually to blend and achieve the sounds I am looking for if I use sync in a set. So if you skip the step of manually beatmatching in your headphones, you limit yourself from first training your ears and second correcting beatmatches that aren't perfectly while a blend is occurring. Also beatmatching is only a small part of DJing. The more practice put in the more it becomes second nature and the more focus is put on other aspects of your mix. So don't be afraid to use sync in a bind but also don't be afraid to beatmatch under pressure 🙂
I like your delivery brother, I have an awesome teacher in class but i do theory based learning and practicing at home and found your videos. great job
Thank you for sharing this and explaining it so well. Given a DJ deck as a present and as Im in my 50s and a complete beginner. Your videos will help me so well.
This is random. However, im in training, im a finalist in a DJ Comp (different name.) Im not new as such, but, i've never used a controller/as such (hard to explain.) BUT, you told me something, that NOONE has told me! AND, it was something i accidentally came across. "PHRAZING!!!!" OMG. I know its small, but alot of people say use 2 songs and sometimes, u accidentally load the same song, and dont even notice?! That is what happened to me, and the sound was super weird?? BUT, it seemed good. I had no idea what was happening...YOU, explained it. THANKYOU!
Hearing the phasing while playing identical songs was relatively easy. Hearing the phasing while playing different songs, not so easy. Any tips on how to hear the phasing when playing different songs?
Really useful video but you only cover phasing in regards to beatmatching. If you could do a video on how to beat match by ear (adjusting tempo on tracks that are different bpms) that would be great
This is by far the most beginner friendly DJ tutorial. Thank you! Definitely will be watching the rest
