This smoker is highly efficient. I've had it run for 18+ hours on one basket of coals - just to see how long it would burn. The biggest problem with a UDS is knowing how to pull back on the reigns - so to speak

Dude, you've come such a long way, lol. I've learned so much from you and a few others on RUclips that I'm now THE guy for BBQ in my circle of friends - kinda motivating me to see if I can do it for a little income. Can't say thank you enough for all the shared knowledge and encouragement

Have you ever thought of putting a pellet grill hopper assembly on a UDS for the heating and temperature control. I did one and It worked out great

You can indeed use the strip magnet on the lower vents. Our first drum had black pipe, but the caps rusted on and wouldn't come off. Unfortunately, we didn't find out until the morning of a competition! So that night the black pipe was cut off of 2 of the 3 vents and replaced with magnets. Works like a charm ever since! Have fun!

This is nice. I've made 4 of them myself and love the way they cook as well. As a matter of fact, I had the exact same fire basket made for 2 of my units. Good video.

I feel like you should break this thing out if you still have it. I found this while looking up videos while smoking some brisket and pork shoulder on a Gateway drum today. Still kicking around buying an Outlaw patio stick burner in the future.

Part of the point of drum Smokers is fat drips off the meat on the coals and adds to the smoke for more flavor a deflector plate would defeat the purpose you just have to get good at controlling your temperatures

    • @jodyandmichelle1

I am in Memphis as well. I bought the pre-burned out drum from Drumco. They have two versions, one with a removable lid and one without. Make sure to get the one with the lid already cut and it will save you some trouble.

They use a drip pan or a water pan over the coals to help steam the meat, it helps to make the meat tender, Just though you may like this info CHEERS

you should make a metal removable working table that slides into the handle three pieces of metal attatched to the drum edge closest to the drum so it bares the weight of the table so you can have a work station and its removable too.
