    That was actually shocking. I spent a large amount of time in the military, and the 50 goes thru brick, wood, or almost anything we'd normally consider cover. Course that was only single rounds, but that means some serious chains could provide a hell of a lot more protection than I ever thought.

    So a chain curtain around a fortification.
    And when firing from inside, you just poke your muzzle through, and pull back for an instant re-seal. A thin sheet of steel could be used to prevent little fragments from getting through, and holding the structure's shape. Fixing damage just means re-shuffling chains around.
    Ranged chemical, flame and smoke would be the offensive strategy, I guess, if you had to go up against this for real.

      Excet that historical mail wasn't made from links that thick. That and the chains were stopping the bullets largely because they were dangling loose. I'm not so sure that they would have stopped anything from getting through if you were to wear them like a shirt.

  • @aSinisterKiid
    @aSinisterKiid 2 года назад +82

    The wooden stand breaking is an excellent example of how much kinetic energy is dumped all at once with the .50 bmg shot. Since the chain basically acts a net to catch the bullet it actually does a really good job of spreading out the load pretty evenly. But just the fact that the stand cracked and broke because of all that potential energy being dumped out into the entire chain really does a great job showing a visual representation of how much energy is stuffed into that single bullet.

    • @JohnDoe-nz6bk
      @JohnDoe-nz6bk 2 года назад

      It looks like it was already broken before being shot with the 50.

    • @aSinisterKiid
      @aSinisterKiid 2 года назад

      @@JohnDoe-nz6bk nah it was holding together just fine with all the other bullets. None of the other ammunition is really travelling that fast to dump enough energy to effect the stand. The .556 rifle and the one other handgun with the fast ammo was a better chance at making it through the chains, but they aren't loaded with enough powder to dump that kind of energy out. The .50 bmg is an entirely different ballgame with how much powder is in their shells. The first shot is what cracked the stand and then second shot is what broke it completely.

    • @MisterMick113
      @MisterMick113 2 года назад

      @@aSinisterKiid energy is also dependent on mass as well as velocity. The 5.56 and 50BMG have similar velocities, around 3000 feet per second but the 50 is over ten times heavier with bullet weights from 650 all the way to 800 grains. The 5.56 can vary from 55 grains up to 62 and I've heard there are bullets weighing in the 70s. That's why the 5.56 has around 1800J of energy and the 50 can get up to 20,000J

    • @aSinisterKiid
      @aSinisterKiid 2 года назад +2

      @@MisterMick113 yeah i'm aware of mass component as well as velocity. That's one of the main reasons I enjoy the taofledermaus channel and all the testing he does with such unique projectiles. It's fascinating to see some of the results with shells he doesn't load as "hot" or vice versa when he puts a little extra in. It's interesting to see how the mass of the "bullet" (or whatever exotic projectile he is using) can vary the characteristics in flight depending on just a bit more or less powder being used. His high speed footage looking into Sub or supersonic flight of the projectile after leaving the barrel is always interesting. Learn all kinds of stuff flies straight that you would think should fly funky and then surprised by stuff that looks like it should fly straight as an arrow but ends up doing weird stuff depending on the velocity its travelling at. If you don't already watch his channel then it's worth checking out if your into that kind of stuff.

      @MisterMick113 2 года назад +1

      @@aSinisterKiid oh good, I see a lot of half truths or even straight up myths get thrown around and wanted to paint a more complete picture in case someone reads your comment and assumes that its just case capacity that matters. I've seen taofledermaus and love the work he does, probably because I used to mess around and shoot stuff to see what happens. I'd have loved a high speed camera to use too, but I guess I'll settle on his vids lol. Maybe I'll see you over there sometime.

    When you were talking about the steel core inside the .50 cal, you can have hardened steel but if it is "soft" steel as you called it, that would be known as mild steel.

    Hey Edwin! The Mosin is my favorite Russian weapon as well! I had an M44. Truly wish I didn't sell it!! I cant afford to buy one back (At three to 4 times what I paid for, and thus sold my first one for)

    After you put the chain on your chest you can't stand up. But you have that thing that you can touch and say--I have fallen and can't get up. Then you are golden. I wonder how the chains would do if they were not loose. Thanks for the video.

    Sick video man. Upon impact, the chain waves and discipates all the kinetic energy from the bullet. I still thought a hyper fast round would go through, but nope, it stops even the mighty 50 BMG!
    Moral of the story: it's better to be able to move backward when taking a push from the front. A stationary object will take all the kinetic energy, even the mighty Titanium and Tungsten will be penetrated.
