Remember, this is amateur boxing, not professional boxing. The primary responsibility for the committee is to protect both fighters. In the amateurs, they will definitely err on the side of caution when a fighter is hurt. Duvergel was momentarily out of it and had trouble getting up. Any amateur referee would have stopped the fight regardless of which fighter was hurt.
Remember it like it was yesterday. Im a personal friend of David's. I felt like I won the Gold. I jumped up in my living room screaming. I was only 16 years old. Love you buddy.
@b52gf16c Yeah I know, but he could have become a more experienced fighter and beaten some of the greats had his injuries not occurred, which actually started as far back as the U.S Olympic Trials
When a fighter doesn’t immediately argue after being stopped it is legitimate. The Cuban was too stunned to argue, good stoppage. Watched this fight live in ‘96.
Most Cuban fighters are tough as hell and have great boxing skills. Erislandy Lara is allegedly 39 (and probably older) and no one wants to fight him. Duvergel's coach in this fight should have reminded him he was up by 10 points and to back off in the last round.
@SteelSnail dude look carefully at him when he stands up...he is not balanced when he stands up..the stoppage is good...on the other hand, the referee doesnt seem to look at him after he stands up before stopping the fight...a bit odd but he was out thats for sure.
Cuban guy didnt know what happened until after everything happened. He coaches had to tell him the ref stopped the fight. even after the ref waved the fight he still stumbled on the ropes lol
@tcr9315 Yes, I had forgotten Reid was from Philly. It was a tough pro career for him, as he struggled with one of his eyelids making it difficult for him to have full vision. He notched several exciting wins before taking on Trinidad and losing (though I believe he knocked down Trinidad in that fight). If Reid is wearing a Trinidad shirt rather than supporting Hopkins from his hometown, then you are right. There was a fued between the two.
When Reid turned pro, his handlers fast-tracked him to a title because that eyelid had already been a problem for him as an amateur, and with his gold medal, he was a hot commodity. He won a belt in his 10th pro fight. Trinidad was his 15th. That fight was even through six, but Tito beat him down with his experience in the latter rounds. Reid finished on his feet but lost on points. He had been given a year after the Olympics before doctors said the eyelid would fail. He got three. After Trinidad, he had trouble seeing out of that eye, and barely won three fights before losing to a journeyman and never fighting again. No surgery was able to fix it. He finished 17-2 as a pro.
@chriskent2002 - another quick story. In the later '90's i collect boxing cards. Every full box had 1 autographed insert card of a boxer. I bought a box. The autographed card i got inside, yes, a David Reid. Here he was just another kid i boxed along side of as a teen in Philly growin up. It felt great gettin an auto card of some1 from around the way and that you saw as an ama and comin up etc.
:-) Now...I've watched the fight "live" in 1996. Before the fight I thought that MAYBE FMJr. would be the winner. After the first round I already knew it was STodorov who was going to win. And I wasn't wrong. Period.
@chriskent2002 - knew David from the gyms in Philly in the early '90's. I remember us being surprised he made it to the games. He was always down at Champs Gym workin out in the shadows of my man BHop. Reid had created a fude between the two. BHop woulda wrecked Reid. Quick story - when Hopkins fought Trinidad, after the fight that nite, i saw Reid wearing a trinidad shirt supportint Tito and not his hometown boy. Also note - Trinidad had ko'd Reid at this point as well. Unreal but 100% tru
@leonazul28 amateur boxing isn't like that. when your hurt like that this is what you need to do: 1-stand up straight and don't move, 2- put your hands up to let the ref know you are ok because you can't talk to the ref or opp in amateur boxing. Duvergel was very hurt, after the ref called the fight notice what Duvergel is doin', he's still wobbled. In the pro's they would have let the fight go on
I did watched it actually, directly.Don't blame the referee neither-everyone can make a mistake.Especially in a though fight that it was.Mayweather lost, but it doesn't mean the fight wasn't a great one.And just because he is an American, and he became what he did,it doesn't mean that he couldn't lose to a better and much more experienced fighter back then. What's the big deal after all?!?
No way! At 3:00 you can see Duvergel falls trying to get up and at 3:10 you can clearly see he cannot walk straight. It's amateur boxing and they always tend to stop fights a little early to protect the fighters.
SiThompson1 that was a tricky call by the referee Duvergel may have been able to continue but he could have been seriously hurt if the ref did not stop the fight David Reid has a powerful over-hand right and one more shot like that could have had a devastating impact on Duvergel-so the referee was wise to stop the fight these boxers were kids not grown men
I don't get it. The referee could have stopped it when he was struggling to get up but he waited until he was up and looked ok. An so it does look like a gift.
What are you talking about? Mayweather was never robbed at the Olympics?!?Atlanta you mean?...Well,as far as I remember,he lost in the semi-final against Serafim Todorov. He was just outclassed by the 3 times World Champion then.So ,what exactly is your complain here?
one of the greatest olympic comebacks ever

‘Do you believe in miracles?’: David Reid is the REAL Rocky....
Yup
After 25 years, Herbert from Brazil wins with a KO the Olympic Boxing at Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Unbelievable

We love ya, David Reid! You made us proud!
Seriously?
You call that a victoria 15-1 hell no.

David was so happy after that win. Here's to hoping he conquers depression learns to enjoy life once again.
@b52gf16c To be fair he was a world champion it’s just that his eye injuries fucked him up
@b52gf16c Yeah I know, but he could have become a more experienced fighter and beaten some of the greats had his injuries not occurred, which actually started as far back as the U.S Olympic Trials
I still remember this moment more than 20 years ago. I literally jumped out of my seat cheering. Great moment!
Being from Philly, and a young boxer at the time, that year 96 was a beautiful time in the city.
Thanks for this!!!

Ricardo Williams Jr fought in 2000 olympics with Jermain Taylor and Jeff Lacy
Williams was nice in the amateur. He was robbed in the Olympics.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He hit him with a hard shot
You're right, I thought it was 2000 Olympics. My mistake. By the way, USA is 4-0 so far in 2012.

DAVID REID HAS STOPPED ALFREDO DUVERGEL!
porque paro la pelea ?

Have you ever watched that fight? Mayweather clearly wins the fight, that's why the referee raises his hand and not the guy who got the decision
great punch, that stoppage looked shady though
In the amateurs, face first knock downs, you are fortunate to get a count.
Face first knock down plus a stumbling face plant, it's over in the amateurs.
@leonazul28 - it was no gift. He was done for in ama boxing. If a boxer is taking too much in ama, they stop it.
