The Reserve Bank of India stated on Tuesday that the retail digital rupee (eRs-R) will go live on December 1 as a pilot programme. The experiment would encompass a few sites in a closed user group (CUG) made up of participating customers and merchants, according to a statement from RBI.
The eRs-R would take the shape of a digital token that stands in for money.
The same denominations that are currently used for paper money and coins would also be used for the Digital Rupee.
Banks would act as the distributional mediators.
The central bank has picked eight banks for phase-wise participation in this experiment.
In the initial phase, four banks-the State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and IDFC First Bank-will be present in four different cities across the nation.
Following that, this pilot will include participation from four other banks: Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
The pilot would initially cover Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, New Delhi, and Mumbai.
Later, Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Lucknow, Patna, and Shimla will also be included.
Through a digital wallet provided by the participating banks and kept on mobile phones/devices, users will be able to conduct transactions with eRs-R.
Both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant transactions are possible (P2M). According to the statement, rapid response (QR) codes that are displayed at merchant locations can be used to make payments to retailers.
