@Nick K. I'm just trying to help anyone trying to avoid unwanted negativity. People can express themselves in any way they like. If someone says they're a woman, man, dog, cat, dragon, resurrected monarch, or whatever. Then I will respect their wishes. It's really not a hard concept to fathom and people that choose to spend their time shouting about things they don't understand are projecting their own insecurities on people that don't deserve it.
Google your questions. Why this, why that? Someone somewhere asked themselves the same questions and someone smarter than you found the answer. You do not have to guess anymore nor ask your parents.
This was super interesting, I read somewhere recently that as the male:female ratio is very off in China due to the one child rule and a preference for baby boys (I think it was something like 117:100), the bride price in China has skyrocketed. Bad news for the boys! Sidenote: loved the poem 🙊
That's only true for humans and domesticated animals, but we're still driven by instinct to seek out physically fit partners. Physical fitness is of huge importance to wild animals.
@@bg.moogey actually those that are 400 lbs or fat in general probably have the instinct to eat as much as possible when there's the opportunity, so a long time ago, in an environment with little to no food they would probably be able to stay alive(and would not be able to reach 400 lbs in the first place) while those that have no appetite, or have a very active metabolism, with a caloric need to mactch, would probably be at constant risk of death. The reason because such people exist is that the traits that contribute to their obesity were beneficial in such an environment, but in the different environment that is the modern world, where food is overabundant, those same traits have now become unfevourable because, well they are at risk of getting obese, with all of the health complications of the case.
I'm curious though. Sure in Mammals and Birds sex is determined by chronosomes, but what about some reptiles? They have their sex determined by temperature. How do they get about 50/50? Will this be a problem in the near future?
Not all evolutionary stable strategies are 50/50 ratios. Organisms that can change sex are generally all born in one then a few will switch over when it would increase their fitness. Usually in a group of born females, one will become dominant and switch to male, taking all the reproductive fitness and not all any of the females to also switch over
Not all reptile have Sex Temperature Determination. My Leopard geckos do however, when breeding I can set the eggs to 80 degrees for all females, 87 for an equal mix, or 90 degrees for 98% chance of having all males. It's fascinating and super handy for how I want to breed my animals. Unfortunately bearded dragons, most snake species etc do not work this way. But you're right though, it's fascinating to see, perhaps it has some evolutionary advantage for their natural habitat.
A lot of reptiles right now are actually changing the temperatures at which sexes are born at so the ratio is more likely to be stable, in some cases such as the lesbian lizard, all sexes become the same and the organism begins to reproduce half sexually half asexually which is hard to explain but basically all of the organisms are female so all offspring are female but it still requires two parents
"If females are required to invest twice as much as males you would see twice males as many as females" yep are seeing this evolution in China and India right now.
I am the only male in my generation of my family. On both parents sides, I have a total of five female cousins. For other generations, six aunts on both sides in total. Three uncles. Most of my grandparents’ siblings were girls as well.
That elephant seal thing 😂 I thought in humans there were more women than men. Thanks for the explanation. Now we need to genetically engineer us some purple people eaters.
Actually I think the ratio change by 1% up and down every generation, is a trivial oscillation. Right now, I believe is 51% female, 49% male (in humans). Bud I could be wrong. And sorry for the bad English.
TheFonfur apparently as of 2017 it was 49.555% female and 50.445% male, that might have changed slightly but apparently there are more males now? I thought you were right cuz I was told that there were more women for a while, but it turns out that is not the case....
well you know God didn't create us all, even if you don't believe in evolution, god created adam and eve, and then there was a lot of incest and now the original bloodline of adam and eve is so far back where are not all one family anymore, so thank natural selection for making ocd people happy not god because god just made adam and eve. anyway, I just wrote this comment so that I could correct you even if it wasn't a serious matter as your comment is meant to be taken as a joke, I with respect say sorry if you found this comment offending and if want to discuss how everything came to be, just respond to this comment without and further I go, I wish you a good day respectable sir.
Well its a good thing, even though some idiots wants us to be simple masculine men and feminine women, thats not the case, gays have existed for a long time, they are sometimes more feminine and in nature acts as a "carer" for others children etc, and for variation. Now different gender than the traditional i think is also inevitable and proves we humans are a more intelligent and special species, we do not have to abide and stick with what nature says. I think anyone who believes in science would see this.
@JohnKontos10 Except that intersex people are not a monolith, nor perfectly balanced between male and female as individuals; biological sex, like gender, is a spectrum, not a binary, Intersex people are the peak of the bell curve.
Girls aren't something you get. You meet a girl and happens to both find interest in each other. It's about luck and about being an interesting person. Don't expect it to just happen, work on becoming the best you possible!
liten kanin Guys aren't something you get. You meet a guy and happens to both find interest in each other. It's about luck and about being an intersting person. Don't expect it to just happen, work on becoming the best you possible! Don't be a feminist
Well, almost all girls and most guys already work on that. It's just that there are another portion of guys who doesn't and think that they are entitled to automatically get a girl even tho they have stuff like bad hygiene and no social skills. Also girls who are feminists don't think that guys who dislikes feminists should like them. They don't expect anything from them so it's not the same.
Karel actually no, even if the number of sexes are equal, not everyone gets equal reproductive success. So the answer to your question is still in a gray area, yes and no XD
Can you do a video about why natural selection seems to drive toward an imbalance of sidedness in most vertebrate species. Like only 10-15% of people being left handed (or whatever the exact ratio) instead of being 50/50 with right handed.
@@DBSilver2024 Point to the peer reviewed studies that say so please. Natural selection can impact on behavioural patterns too as far as those may have any sort of hormonal link or other physiological drivers. It's more than hair and eye colour.
@@puirYorick lemme answer your original question... Having same dominant hand favours cooperation, while different dominant hand is better while competing... If it was exclusively about cooperation, we would get 100% righties or 100% lefties... If it were exclusively about competition, then 50-50... Since real society tends to be somewhere in the middle, 90-10 happens to be the equilibrium point

how is that possible? are you confusing sex with gender or sexuality? You will either have XX(female) or XY(male) sex chromosome or in rare cases XXY(which i dont know what it is called) but you definitely fit in one of these.
If the bachelor seals catch their own food they aren't mooching. Mooching only, and can only, refers to animals which aquire resources without exerting labor or participating in trade. Being unlucky in love is not mooching. Leaches are moochers. Male seals are not.
Sheldon Robertson Seals aren't capitalists. The only thing that counts in nature is the continuation of the species. Don't confuse the standards of human civilizations with the priorities of evolution.
Sheldon Robertson yeah, but in modern times you should not pass any oportunista to insult and degrade males it’s the political mandate and this due works for a politically correct channel that promotes this line of thinking, so he abides
A moocher is someone gaining without benefitting. So by existing without procreating you are mooching? If every man on earth had children with every woman of every species the world would be overpopulated.
Aren't humans naturally inclined to birth more male children than female (by about 1% or so) because males have a higher fatality rate and it's supposed to even itself out by adulthood
just little details like making sure you clarify you're talking abt biological sex and not gender are what makes you and your sister shows amazing. usually someone who's not lgbt wouldn't think of including that but you guys stand above and i thank you for that
Typically that's because female/male are biological terms where as man/women are gender terms. What terms are used can help you determine what's being talked about.
Well, many of us just suck at "getting it on" and as men, in most cultures, if you don't do it right or at all then you are bound to be single. HOWEVER, if approaching women is a problem for you, there are many cultures where women are proactive at "getting it on" as well so looking towards those directions can be worthwhile. As a caucasian - go to Indonesia and you are guaranteed to have enough attention to find a partner without difficulty.
Joe: *it's not survival of the moochiest it's survival of the fittest* Also Joe: *it's not survival of the fittest it's survival of the fit enough* Edit: mAkE uP yOuR MiNd aLrEaDy
Cynthia Goodman I'd imagine because a lot of diversity is still generated among the females. Even with a small number of males, it's still pretty unlikely you'll be anything but half related to someone, and they probably have some mechanism to avoid incest when possible. Plus, in that new generation, only a small number of new males mate, typically those with superior sexual selection, which likely weeds out noticeable deformation caused by genetic disease. It ain't pretty but, it probably works out fine most of the time.
Presuming the females choose the male elephant seals with better genes, they need a pool of males to pick from. If only 5% of elephant seals were male and each had almost 20 mates, the next generation would simply have average genes from the males. With even numbers and 96% of males being rejected for inferior genetics, better genetics are passed along to successive generations, allowing for elephant seals more successful at living. While the best genetic offspring would come from the 5% of the most genetically fit males and females, this would leave too few offspring for most mammal species. What would happen if humanity chose to have only the top 25% of each sex mate, bear, and raise children with the other 75% providing financial support? How fast would we increase factors like intelligence, strength, and looks? When planned, this is called eugenics, but isn't this also an unplanned part of nature?
Actually, it's more likely that such an inequality would lead to one male having to protect nine females who are defenseless while raising the offspring, and it would also mean far less genetic diversity which means less adaptability.
My old school somewhat loathed the fact there were equal males n females in the school. Basically the school originated as a female only school and changed to co-ed. Some of the teachers have an obvious bias against boy students but since it was primary school no one rlly did anything. Me and a few other boys presented to the teachers of the bias and we got scolded for " being unfair". The rules weren't against us or anything, but the people were.
In my region, up until recently there was two private high schools with one having only male students, and one only female students, plus three public schools that accepted both. About 20 years ago, I believe, the boy school let girls in at a ratio of about 1/3. Last year, they decided to make it 50/50. Meanwhile, the girl private school is still only girls...

This was super interesting, I read somewhere recently that as the male:female ratio is very off in China due to the one child rule and a preference for baby boys (I think it was something like 117:100), the bride price in China has skyrocketed. Bad news for the boys! Sidenote: loved the poem 🙊
I think there should be a one child rule in a lot of countries that are having population issues.

You're like the love child of Mr. Rogers and Bill Nye.
2:00 Survial of the fittest actually means survival of the most fitting and has little to do with being athletic or strong.
That's only true for humans and domesticated animals, but we're still driven by instinct to seek out physically fit partners. Physical fitness is of huge importance to wild animals.
I doubt a 400 lb person would survive thousands of years ago, or even 100 years ago
No elephant seal looks like that, obviously. It's a joke.
Simple answer: To avoid incest.
avoiding incest would be easier with a small amount of males and a lot of females then 50/50
@@est727xx5 wrong, if male population small like 1:10 ratio its will make lot of them are half sibling
*NO.*
Usually in a group of born females, one will become dominant and switch to male, taking all the reproductive fitness and not all any of the females to also switch over
This is already a major issue for some turtle species, warmer climates mean their female to male ratio is WAY out of whack.
Purplepoppyanimator
what happens if u changed temp in between??
A lot of reptiles right now are actually changing the temperatures at which sexes are born at so the ratio is more likely to be stable, in some cases such as the lesbian lizard, all sexes become the same and the organism begins to reproduce half sexually half asexually which is hard to explain but basically all of the organisms are female so all offspring are female but it still requires two parents

I have wondered this for so long, glad I'm finally getting an answer.
I am the only male in my generation of my family. On both parents sides, I have a total of five female cousins. For other generations, six aunts on both sides in total. Three uncles. Most of my grandparents’ siblings were girls as well.
Complete opposite for me, I'm the only girl.
Crazy how different families are, our family has a pretty 50/50 ratio.

Thats more of a psychological cause than a biological one.

Interesting. Good explanation
Sheldon Robertson Oh, and I'm sorry about your inability to get layed...

LOL, the elephant seal cartoon images are hilarious. :D
If there's an equal ratio of male and female, THEN WHY THE HELL AM I SINGLE?!

How do elephant seals avoid incest related genetic issues if such a small number of males pass on their genes?
Cynthia Goodman I'd imagine because a lot of diversity is still generated among the females.
Even with a small number of males, it's still pretty unlikely you'll be anything but half related to someone, and they probably have some mechanism to avoid incest when possible.
Plus, in that new generation, only a small number of new males mate, typically those with superior sexual selection, which likely weeds out noticeable deformation caused by genetic disease.
It ain't pretty but, it probably works out fine most of the time.
Because if the incest creates a bad genetic mutation, then the offspring with the bad gene won’t get to mate and the bad gene won’t get passed along.
They don't, that's why they're so ugly.
I applaud for the poem at the end👏👏👏

Is it normal that videos like these aren’t coherent to me unless I watch them multiple times
Ah yes, softening the blows of nature with lovely dad jokes. Gotta love it. :)
Seals be like...

Its crazy to think the environment can influence what sex will be born. That is such a neat design!
Actually, it's more likely that such an inequality would lead to one male having to protect nine females who are defenseless while raising the offspring, and it would also mean far less genetic diversity which means less adaptability.
Elephant seal males "protect" their females from other males so they don't mate. What you're saying doesn't make sense.
