In almost every animal species on Earth, equal numbers of males and females are conceived. Why is that? Especially in populations like lions or elephant seals, where most males don’t get to mate? That’s survival of the laziest, not survival of the fittest. It turns out that in most cases, an equal balance of the sexes is the evolutionary stable strategy. From Charles Darwin to Ronald Fisher to W.D. Hamilton to Richard Dawkins, the question of why there’s as many males as females has fascinated biologists. Today, we’ll explain why that is the way it is.

It’s about a lot more than X and Y… evolution insists on a balance.
If you want to learn more about this bit of evolutionary theory, there’s some suggestions in the description. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought of this week’s video!

It's Okay To Be Smart why don't you ask and answer the question who raised the first humans? from a logical perspective it must of been aliens or some higher intelligence, you look at babies nowadays and there's NO WAY they'd be able to survive and adapt quickly like other animal's babies (what came first the chicken or the egg?)

I believe it's supposed to be another way to balance the physical sexes. Some nests will produce mostly male, others mostly female, but many will have a roughly even split of the sexes.
There's more to it than that, thou. Since males and females have no genetic difference, fitness of one sex usually translates to finess of the other sex for those same genes (minus mating selection pressures). So, for dominant female caimen, there's an advantage to producing more males... she's the fittest female who mated with the fittest male (since no second rate bloke is gonna best big momma), so she's got great genes in her eggs (generally speaking), so since she's got such great odds of them becoming very successful offspring, why not make them males? Males mate many more times than females in a breeding season. Sure, only a few males get to mate, but she's got some fit genes, surely any that survive to adult hood will likely be successful. And she's got great genes and so does daddy, so why not flood the future breeding seasons with her babies' hardy mix of genes, as much as possible? She'd get more grand-offspring, and their fitness is good for the species. So her better investment is in males. And she gets top pick of nest sights, so she can make that happen. Maybe 80% of her babies or more could be male, if she chooses well.
For a low ranking female, she gets last choice of nests, so... she gets nest sight leftovers. Not to mention... her mate was probably the fittest male, unless, being on the outskirts of the area, a rogue male caught her and subdued her for some matings... but regardless, her own genes aren't the fittest. Yet, she's still alive and thriving well enough to breed. So, her better investment in the longevity of her genetic line is in females, who mostly all get to breed (except in times of hardship, where the resources to breed may dry up, taken wholy by the fittest...low ranking females may not breed every year, but they do breed most years... and even in the bad times when the dominant female challenges her and eats a lot of her children [to remove their competition to big mama's children] before they leave her care early to avoid the genocide, at least some survive)...so her reduction in nest choices is more about safety for her and her eggs than it is about the fact that as a second rate nest that it will probably produce more females, which she wants anyway.
Exceptions to this situation may be when populations fluctuate and they find themselves in a situation where there's lots of males and almost no females... then a fit female may chose female offspring. Leaving the less fit females with a lot of reproductivly dead-end male children (with the potential for one or two exceptions, since daddy is probably that massive bloke over there, probably). Or, the dominant female does the same anyway and goes for sons, leaving more openings for other lines in the species/genetic gaps. 🤷
In the end thou, everyone wants daughters *and* sons... sure sons are the bigger winning ticket... but, that's only if they make it BIG. If they come in second place, well, they may hardly ever mate. Females are the steady maters... so if any female wants some guarantee that her genetic line continues, she needs some daughters. After all, what if the great male is hiding aweful genetic mutations? Or, what if one of his advantageous mutations is a bad mix with her genes? Better to have some daughters, just in case. And anyway, if many of her children survive, she'd want them to fill as many spots in the species as possible, and avoiding female positions within the species leaves those places open for others' lines to fill... not to mention having daughters opens up those other fit males to being mates with her children, allowing for more genetic opportunities for her line. As for a low ranking female and sons... everyone wants some sons, because, what if?
As for those "resource eating" males... they're there in case something takes out all the big males, and they do occasionally swindle a random off the books mating helping to provide genetic diversity a little bit, and are especially a population insurance policy... if the main population dies, sure, most of the lesser males probably will too, but a few may be hardy if not big growers. They may be all that's left to carry the species on. That may not play out for every scenario, but every insurance policy helps the species, they add up.
Over time the fittest females produce more males, while the less fit females overall produce more females. But it's near impossible to have any one nest as large as a camin's produce only one sex. This drives selection towards the fittest genes which benefits the population overall, while less fit females especially provide for genetic diversity, providing robustness for the population, which helps protect the species from disease and environmental changes. Overall, while there's biases both ways for the different kinds of opportunities that different lines inherently benefit from... everyone gets some genetic tickets for assurity and some possible BIG tickets. Everyone wins, in their own way.
Overall physical sexual population split? About 50/50 each season.

Now different gender than the traditional i think is also inevitable and proves we humans are a more intelligent and special species, we do not have to abide and stick with what nature says. • @exactemphasis
      @exactemphasis 6 лет назад +15

Not all evolutionary stable strategies are 50/50 ratios. Organisms that can change sex are generally all born in one then a few will switch over when it would increase their fitness. Usually in a group of born females, one will become dominant and switch to male, taking all the reproductive fitness and not all any of the females to also switch over

Not all reptile have Sex Temperature Determination. My Leopard geckos do however, when breeding I can set the eggs to 80 degrees for all females, 87 for an equal mix, or 90 degrees for 98% chance of having all males. It's fascinating and super handy for how I want to breed my animals.
Unfortunately bearded dragons, most snake species etc do not work this way. But you're right though, it's fascinating to see, perhaps it has some evolutionary advantage for their natural habitat.

A lot of reptiles right now are actually changing the temperatures at which sexes are born at so the ratio is more likely to be stable, in some cases such as the lesbian lizard, all sexes become the same and the organism begins to reproduce half sexually half asexually which is hard to explain but basically all of the organisms are female so all offspring are female but it still requires two parents

The reason because such people exist is that the traits that contribute to their obesity were beneficial in such an environment, but in the different environment that is the modern world, where food is overabundant, those same traits have now become unfevourable because, well they are at risk of getting obese, with all of the health complications of the case.

No, not really. If you're going to the doctor and you're filling out a form, the form says sex. They don't care about what you identify as. They just want to know what genitals and body parts you have. They want to know your biological _sex_. On the other hand, if you're filling out an online profile or an account information page, the form says gender. They don't care about your body, they want to know how you present yourself.
Sex refers to the biological differences between males and females. Gender is the mannerisms and the mental works that we associate with being male or female. Men are seen as louder, more aggressive, more direct, etc, while women are seen as more submissive, more caring, etc.
I don't believe in the infinite genders bullshit either, but sex and gender as words mean different things. Sure, some people see them as the same thing and you can use them to mean the same thing sometimes, but they don't mean the same thing.

I can't believe you had to point out that you were talking about sex and not gender. Are we really in danger of offending the trans elephant seal community

What about girls born without vagina? or women without uterus? or intersex people women? or trans women? Sex is not sononymous with gender.

Andrea Bay I’m sorry but sex and gender are interchangeable terms. Take the medical field for instance, the have they exact same meaning.

I design medical applications for a living. No they do NOT mean the same thing in medicine. There is a clear differentiation between gender and sex, and healthcare organizations go out of their way to ensure that the differentiation is clear and concise, and that people who are non-binary can enter in the relevant information. Just today I had a meeting to discuss how this will be handled in a state-wide health record system.

Ellie May I too work in the medical industry and so do most of my family, I should have specified but I’m not talking about use on a slip. I’m talking about a practical use of the word, when refereeing patients you obviously have to keep their feeling in mind. But for a practical use of the word (in lab work etc) the words are more often used interchangeably than not, as well as having used the same on notes, emails etc.

well you know God didn't create us all, even if you don't believe in evolution, god created adam and eve, and then there was a lot of incest and now the original bloodline of adam and eve is so far back where are not all one family anymore, so thank natural selection for making ocd people happy not god because god just made adam and eve. anyway, I just wrote this comment so that I could correct you even if it wasn't a serious matter as your comment is meant to be taken as a joke, I with respect say sorry if you found this comment offending and if want to discuss how everything came to be, just respond to this comment without and further I go, I wish you a good day respectable sir.

Well, almost all girls and most guys already work on that. It's just that there are another portion of guys who doesn't and think that they are entitled to automatically get a girl even tho they have stuff like bad hygiene and no social skills.
Also girls who are feminists don't think that guys who dislikes feminists should like them. They don't expect anything from them so it's not the same.

Maybe the male Vulpix are more invested... since 75% female gender ratio.
