  • I have somehow managed to neglect Isaac Asimov on the Sci-Fi Shed in my first year on RUclips, so with this episode I address that problem. I take a look at Isaac Asimov's Robot Series with "Cave of Steel"
Asimov, together with Heinlein and Clarke form the BIG 3 and I'm glad to finally get around to sharing Isaac Asimov with you all.
I provide a plot overview, talk to what I liked and what I didn't like, make some recommendations and give it a ranking.
I hope you can join me as we spend some time in the shed.

This is one of my favourite Asimov novels along with 'The End of Eternity' (which I think is tremendously underrated). Read about 6 Asimov's last year including the original Foundation trilogy. As I explore vintage SF I've found myself less and less likely to read Asimov. Not sure if it is familiarity breeding contempt, which may be too strong a word. Perhaps breeding indifference.

I went through a similar journey, really enjoyed Asimov in my teens, and as I read more and discovered so many more great authors and novelist, Asimov fell of the radar and almost out of flavour. For me it was something similar to what I'm seeing with Dune, when something becomes so main stream and popular, it almost loses attraction for me. Almost three decades later, I came back to Asimov and once again enjoyed his novels. I wonder what I will think of him 30 years from now :)

I’ve read quite a bit of Asimov but have still never got around to this one. Shall have to rectify this soon. Great review Peter!

@@thesci-fished well I see I gave Foundation 5 stars on goodreads. Also enjoyed Nightfall. I think mostly I just like his short stories because they have some great ideas, like The Last Question

Oh, my man, "CAVES of STEEL" is where I started on my Asimov journey. What you eventually learn is that Asimov wrote mystery stories, and robot stories, and decided to combine them...
Yeah, this is one of the very BEST.
Since you brought up humanoid robots, curious as to your reaction to "The Humanoids" by Jack Williamson.

Yes indeed, that's one of the many things I like about SF. You can pretty much tackle any theme you want, throw in some time travel, a robot, some aliens, or whatever, and you have a great SF novel that can ask any question it wants :)
Man, that's taking me right back.
I haven't read J. Williamson for years. I remember reading Humanoids, or it may have been the short story that preceded it and I remember thoroughly enjoying it. I should revisit Williamson one of these days.

I've always struggled with Asimov's novels. You'd think they'd be easy, with their dialog-heavy structure and clean, almost antiseptic prose, but, at least for me, they've always been mountains I could never climb. And it bothers me, b/c I feel like I'm missing out. His sideburns, alone, are intimidating.

hahaha, yeah those sideburns... i should really should make sure no one sees those photos of me back when I was in my late 20s... don't know what i was thinking with those mutton chops. :-)
