When Mondo was 15 Sweden asked if Mondo would vault for Sweden. he initially said no then Sweden agreed to make his parents coaches on the Swedish National team. He has vaulted for Sweden ever since. As an American I can understand this. In America he can walk the streets and 99% of Americans wouldn't even know who he was and his earning power on his name would be low. He is a professional athlete with a limited earning life. His ability to make money in Sweden far surpasses what he would get in America.

He said himself that a big part of it is the qualification process in the US is something he doesn't need to worry about in Sweden.

His mother is Swedish, he visited Sweden every summer growing up, he speaks Swedish, he lives in Sweden now, and most importantly, his family asked for support when he was a junior athlete and was denied and Sweden said we will support you going forward. Also, as an athlete, you are allowed to switch allegiance (countries) as long as you are a junior - this is very, very common across many sports. Once you enter the senior ranks you can switch but you must sit out several years.

@@BladeRunner-2211 Pure jealousy. The US national team officials showed no interest in him when he needed it most (as an up-and-coming star). Now in retrospect, everyone can see it differently. Too slow, too late.
Sweden welcomed Duplantis, huge difference. Greg became very positive to the nice treatment from Swedish national team officials, it was decisive.
And as many have pointed out, Mondo has strong connections to Sweden. 🇸🇪

@@peterh.1521 He wanted to compete for Sweden because it's much less stressful and demanding than the US. At the end of the day he's still American born and bred, stay jealous.
