ABOUT: In this video I’m going to show you how to connect any Ledger hardware wallet to MetaMask. I’m making this as a small update to part of my full Ledger guide - about a week after I released that video, MetaMask was updated, and now the process is a little different than what I showed. This will work for any Ledger device: the Nano S, S+, and X. I’m going to show the Nano X because that’s my preferred device. You will need to set up your Ledger device, and I suggest following the full guide to help with that. You will get a 24 word seed phrase from it, DO NOT PUT THAT ANYWHERE BESIDES THE PHYSICAL DEVICE. If you’re not careful, it could give hackers and scammers an opening to steal your assets. You will also need the MetaMask browser extension since this doesn’t work on MetaMask Mobile yet.
To import the Ledger hardware wallet into MetaMask, open the ETH application and click on Connect Hardware Wallet. Click the MetaMask icon in your browser, then click the colored circle in the upper right corner to reveal the associated account, then click the Hardware Ledger address.

What’s the best way to transfer all your assets to your nano s plus? I haven’t found a video that shows me what to do if I already have a metamask account with assets in it. And would you do the same if you have a rainbow wallet too? Just transfer all to your ETH address of your ledger??
@@daniblt3273 yeah that's pretty much it, straightforward but tedious. I would start with restoring your original seed phrase in MetaMask, then add your Ledger account to that. This will make transferring between the 2 much easier, I show this in the main Ledger guide's MetaMask section (linked in the description) if you want to see what that looks like
@@adamventure how do you restore your original seed phrase? Do I need to make a whole new metamask account? Or just add another account to the existing metamask account I already have?
This video was a life saver man. I was trying to connect a hardware wallet with metamask already installed and my address loaded in -- the check box was greyed out and filled in and wouldn't let me connect. So many people have been trying to figure how to fix this issue and this is THE only solution. Will be sharing this video in all forums. Thanks man.

@@adamventure Can you clarify one thing for me? If I lose the computer where I connected my MM can I just link my Ledger to another Metamask and the coins are still safu? Metamask with ledger is basically an interface so theres no need for seedwords?

Thank you glad it was helpful! You would always use the Ledger, only by recovering the seed phrase onto a new one then reconnecting it to MetaMask

You're welcome I'm glad it was helpful! And yes you can still stake your ETH, it acts just like a normal wallet in that sense. Disconnecting it doesn't change anything. Your crypto is stored on the blockchain, not on the device itself - only the keys are

Hey Nick thanks I'm glad it was helpful! Unfortunately no since that seed phrase has already been exposed outside of the device. So you can't transfer everything to the new Ledger address and hook it up to MetaMask?

Thank you Jafar and great question! So first off MetaMask can store multiple accounts, so you can have both the original and the Ledger on it. When you connect the Ledger to MetaMask, you will still be using its own seed phrase which you will never have to enter on MetaMask. Hope that makes sense!
This tutorial is for connection for ethereum chain. Is the avalanche or binance chain the same processes.
Yup its the exact same process, you'll just need to configure MetaMask to use those networks. Most dapps will automatically do this for their respective networks

I did exactly what you said and when I try to connect my ethereum account from my ledger it just gives me the spinning wheel of death and doesn't show the ETH i have in the account. Any ideas?

You're welcome! Yes that's exactly what that means as long as its on the Ledger's address

Yes it will! You’ll need to transfer your crypto to the Ledger account but that’s easy within MetaMask

Hi Adam, This may be a silly question. What can you do on Meta Mask that you cannot do on Ledger live? Why not just do all your trading on ledger live and not complicate things by adding Meta Mask?
Not all defi apps have direct integration to Ledger. However this is becoming less of an issue, and many things you do now might not require MetaMask now!

Hey Paul, thanks I'm glad it was helpful! For BSC, yes you do the same thing plus 1 additional step. You need to hook you MetaMask up to that network, and most dapps like Pancakeswap will do that for you

Hey Aashish I appreciate it! Yup its still the same I showed in the video for the extension. It does not work with the mobile app however - that feature should be coming out before year end
When I want to send Matic to my ledger from MM I need Eth for gas fees?
@@Patash7 it depends which network you're on, if you have the ERC-20 MATIC token on Ethereum, then yes you'll need ETH. If its on the native MATIC network then you can pay with MATIC

You got it! If you already have a MetaMask wallet you don't need to create a new one. If you go back to step where we create a new wallet from a fresh install of MetaMask, just click the "recover" option instead and enter your old seed phrase (NOT the Ledger's)

@@paulholmes8450 yes you can! You can recover the old seed phrase when you go to set up MetaMask for the first time, or just add it like any other account
Im just curious...so you need the recovery phrase for the actual nano x and then input the recovery phrase for your meta mask wallet in order to put it on the ledger?

Yes you can, like you said you'd need to transfer them over from the regular wallet address to the Ledger address. And if a token works with MetaMask it will work with Ledger so you can transfer all those over

@@nolinfrias9309 yeah exactly, Ledger Live is a software wallet just like MetaMask. If you send all your tokens to the Ledger address they will be there even if you can't see them. in Ledger Live. And you can see them on MetaMask but you might have to import those tokens in some cases

Hi Adam, just saw the video cause I just got the Ledger X. Im curious, I downloaded the metamask extension on Chrome but instead of making a new wallet, I imported my Metamask wallets that I have on my mobile app. Is it ok to do this by those accounts since they have the coins that I want to protect? Or is there a specific reason for doing this by actually creating a new metamask wallet on the extension?
Yup that's totally okay to have your previous wallet on MetaMask, I also did this with my setup too. Just make sure you link your Ledger accounts and transfer your coins over

You actually don't need to delete that wallet if you don't want to! You can just follow the steps I show to sync it
Very clear video ! Before trying myself I guess if I wanted to store bep tokens on the BnB network, when connecting the ledger I would choose navigate to the BnB network on the physical ledger and then click connect ledger on the screen and it would let me tick the boxes of BnB accounts right ?
Its weird but you actually still use the ETH app to connect with MetaMask, and then switch the MetaMask network to BNB

Hey man doing great, hope you are too! If you transfer the NFTs like you said from MetaMask to your hardware wallet, you will see all of them on your hardware wallet
Using Firefox browser and on my metamask extension there are no option "Preffered ledger connection type". What do i do?
Not sure if its the Firefox version, but double check you downloaded the official extension. Might be a fake one

Hi there. I accidentally sent my QNT from Kucoin to my ledger using KC and not on the ERC-20. Where the devil has it gone and how do I recover it? Any advice would be appreciated
That's unfortunate, I always recommend double checking your network and sending a small test transaction first. I assume you used your ETH address, so if that's the case you're in luck! You'll need to configure MM to KCC here: www.kcc.io/ and click start now. Then you can use the bridge to get it onto ETH: www.kcc.io/bridge/transfer. Hope this helps!
Hey Matt, I followed your instructions. You said not to worry about the seed phrase that was there. I forgot my password and had to reset it with my meta mask seed phrase. Unfortunately didn’t save the one connected to my ledger.. did I lose everything?
Nope if you reconnect it the way I showed (and how you originally did it) everything will come back. You might need to add your tokens but they are still there
So if I have a bunch of money in my account on multiple chains in my metamask already. How can I connect my ledger to those? Or would I need to transfer all my funds to a new ledger wallet
Yeah you would need to transfer all your funds to the Ledger addresses. It's tedious, but you only have to do it once and you'll be much more secure!
Hey Adam, thank you for your video. I did the step by step for linking NanoX to MM; however, I can not find my MM address on the HD pathway to link account to the Ledger. I've scrolled through about the first 50 addresses. Can you help please?
Hmm thats odd, have you created those accounts in Ledger Live? Create 1 or 2 and see if they're the same as the ones that show in MM. If that doesn't work you can try using the Ledger Live option in the Advanced Settings that I showed

@@michaelfenster6052 hmm haven't seen that before. Did you check the Advanced Settings I showed? Other than that I'd try reinstalling MetaMask completely

Yes that's exactly what that means, sounds like you need to go thru the steps where it says "connect hardware wallet"
Hi Adam, what if all my current tokens or coins are currently located in my MM wallet which I have set up before I purchased my ledger Nano S Plus. Do I need to move those tokens or coins from the MM wallet to the ledger Nano X plus in order to secure them going forward?
Hey Lloyd, yes that's exactly right! Just transfer them all over to the Ledger's address
@@adamventure Thanks. One alternative method as I have seen in other video. Instead of sending the individual tokens in my MM wallet to the ledger, they mentioned that you can import the recovery seed phase of the MM wallet into the ledger, then wipe the seed phrase from the MM Wallet in the Chrome browser so that the seed phrase will not exist in the PC which is now secured in the ledger. For future defi activities, you create a totally new MM wallet and then connect with the ledger wallet for the interaction. Appreciate your confirmation on this method. Thanks
@@lloydong5948 you got it! While you are technically able to do it that's actually bad advice, since your original seed phrase has already been exposed. The only place your seed phrase should ever go is on the Ledger device to truly be safe. While it's more tedious, the other way is the only safe way

I connected my ledger to MetaMask like you showed us without using the seed code, but now I’m getting a pop up stating I need to save/download the seed code from MetaMask. Can I ignore this or can I still use the seed code they provide?
Yeah you can ignore that! I touched on it very briefly in the video, but as long as you don't store anything on that seed phrase (only on your Ledger) you wont need it
So if I select 5 are they on the hardware wallet? I can only see the first one.
They're all on your hardware wallet, those are just the ones you choose to see

Hey Mike, just seeing this now RUclips didn't give me a notification. No those would be different accounts. Not sure what BakerySwap is but you should be careful with these. XRP is not proof-of-stake so you can't really stake it, only lend it, which is fairly risky
This confusing because you only mentioned connecting the wallet via Ethereum. What about coins you hold in other networks on your MetaMask such as BUSD on smartchain or Matic on Polygon network? Do you still connect via Ethereum since that's the main network for MetaMask or select the corresponding network?
You can connect MetaMask to other ETH compatible networks like Polygon and BSC so you can use it with those networks/tokens as well! But the app you use for Ledger + MetaMask is the ETH one (even tho you're using Polygon/BSC/etc). Pretty much any app you use on those networks will automatically configure MetaMask for it, but I also create a Polygon network tutorial that walks you thru it
What are all the ETH addresses that appear when you connect? I have 5-6 of them. Also do we need to repeat steps for each blockchain other than ETH?
Those are all your addresses! The Ledger actually pre-generates 100ish for you (you can add more), but most people only need 2-3 tops. And no you just do this process once, then configure MetaMask for each blockchain you want to use and it will use the same address you linked. I show that process in my Polygon guide if you're interested

You got it! No you will need to have the Ledger hooked up to approve transactions on the device. You will not be subject to hacks because the keys to your crypto never leave the device
If I'm already using a metamask wallet, and want to buy a ledger to move my assets, nfts, etc to it, whats the process? Do I need to pay to move them from my metamask wallet to the ledger? like gas or something? How does it work?
Yes exactly! You would need to setup your Ledger, link it to your MetaMask like in the video, and transfer everything over from your original address to the new one, which will cost gas each time. Its tedious for sure, but well worth the peace of mind and security

@@yeipimaster yeah its definitely not ideal. I'm checking now and it would be about $14 worth of ETH, you could probably try and time it and get to $5. You only have to do it once (for each) and you'll never have to do it again!
Great video Adam, by chance i got my first ledger yesterday and your 2 videos were vert helpful. Quick question, i have staked eth as beth on Binance and maybe looking to transfer it to ledger for security reasons even tho i might not be able to stake anymore. I tried the smallest amount tru the bsc network but it shows it as tokens, not fiat value. Do you have an experience with that?
Awesome glad you found it! Glad that it helped you hit the ground running. To answer your question - yup that's because the main token for BSC is BNB so thats the only thing that will show up with a fiat value in MetaMask. BETH is just a token representing wrapped ETH on BSC. Totally normal, nothing to worry about
I already have tokens on Metamask with ETH/BSC/FTM/AVAX/Polygon etc and whole lot of blockchains and if I want to use Ledger Nano S+ or X and access Metamask, how do I transfer all of those existing tokens on MM to ledger? can you explain the steps? Thanks!
You'll need to transfer them one-by-one from your old address to your Ledger address within MetaMask. Basically you go to Assets within MM, click on it, then click the send button. Then select "Transfer between my accounts" and select your Ledger address. Then you go thru the normal sending crypto you've likely done before. I know its tedious but it's worth the peace of mind! @@SSNU706 yeah so you already have a MM wallet set up, so you can skip straight to the part where you go into your accounts and click "Connect Hardware Wallet" in the video. No need to create a new MM wallet since you already have one!
Hey Adam thanks for posting this helpful video. I have a question relating to "blind signing" using the ledger wallet with mining pools etc. Does this function need to be enabled for it to work in the scenario described above without the funds in the wallet being compromised?
You're very welcome! I'm glad it was informative. It depends on the mining pool, the ones I've mined in only require an address to send earnings to, and receiving does not required any authorization
is there a way to add more than one hardware wallet to your metamask? It looks like it will only add my ledger to me metamask if I first "forget" my Trezor that I have attached.
Yes you can! I actually have 3 hardware wallets hooked up to my MetaMask haha

I dont understand....why are there like a million accounts to choose from? How do i pick the right one? This step makes no sense. I have my hot wallet that exists....i want a new cold wallet for my NFTs so I dont want to use that one.
Your seed phrase can be used to generate hundred of addresses. Luck for us, they're all generated in the same order so just go thru them 1 at a time. If you only want 1 cold wallet address, just select the very first one on that list. That will also be the first one you'll see in Ledger Live, and any other wallet
@@adamventure thanks...I totally didnt understand what was happening here. A friend showed me how to find my address on the Ledger (which they dont make easy to find) and when that matched up with the first entry I felt better about things.

Hey Tero you're welcome I'm glad it was helpful! So basically you have the right idea, the funds need to be on the Ledger address to be considered safe. Ledger does not support MetaMask mobile only the Keystone does - I'll be putting out a video shortly about that. What you can do is install the extension using the link in this video, recover it to your MM mobile seed phrase, connect it to the Ledger like I showed in the video, then transfer all your funds between the accounts

@@paulholmes8450 the bluetooth feature is mostly for Ledger Live but other mobile wallets use it too (Keplr, Pera, Yoroi, etc.). I believe MM is in development but we don't have a date for it yet
Hi, does this work with Edge as well or just Chrome?
My Metamask extension is already setup in Edge but I'm afraid to set it up in Chrome because its asking for my seed phrase in order to install Metamask. Is this normal? Thanks! Also, I tried to connect my hardware wallet to my Metamask Account (via Edge) and I was able to get up to the step in 4:41 of video above. However, none of the accounts look like my accounts. Are the accounts from my Metamask supposed to show up?
Yeah for some reason MetaMask requires that you start with a regular hot wallet first. Should be the same process for both browsers. You don't need one since you don't have to use it, but that's just for setup. If you do have a hot wallet seed phrase (NOT Ledger) you can enter it there, but otherwise just click thru it and don't use that address. When you connect your Ledger, you should see the same addresses as what you see in Ledger Live. Hope this helps!
Hi Adam. When i follow your instructions, i do not have a "preferred ledger connection type" option to select from. it simply goes from IPFS gateway to "Dismiss Secret Recovery Phrase backup reminder". There is no option whatsoever in between these 2 selections. Thoughts?
Hey Samuel, that's strange I'm still seeing it in MetaMask. I'm thinking you could have downloaded a fake version, did you use the link in my video? It might also just be a bug, you could try reinstalling it

What about those who already have a metamask wallet? Mine doesn't have this option down in the bottom. I want to add ledger on an existing metamask account.
There are other accounts with 0 balance but I want my main account with balance to be connected but it’s not working
I can try to help with your problem. So in that account selection screen right after you connect your Ledger, you're not seeing your main account? Have you added it to Ledger Live?

I did it and added BSC to send some BEP20 tokens, but there's something that makes me worry. When I disconnect my Ledger Nano S, it keeps showing this account. Shouldn't it disappear?
And I didn't try it but it's like if I could send tokens without the device. If that happens, it would be very dangerous, since a person that can access my computer could send tokens to their address.

Hey you're very welcome I'm glad it helps! The account will stay there, but in order to send assets you will need to connect your Ledger and confirm on the device. Test it out (try sending a token from your wallet without the Ledger connected), it will give you peace of mind!

Hi buddy as usual it is very informative. I have been using ledger nano s to connect my metamask wallet and storing various chain assets (i.e. polygon, BSC, avax etc.) on metamask. however as i can c that nano s is discontinued therefore if anything happens to my nano s then how can i get access to those assets...can you please explain on this? thanks and keep it up
You're very welcome! If your S stops working you can buy a working hardware wallet like the S+ or Keystone and recover your seed phrase onto it. Its that simple! You could also do that now now to have as a backup, I currently have my X as my main, and an S, a Keystone, and a Trezor as backup

@@mohammadrahman1397 you can transfer all of your assets from those hot wallets onto the Ledger (on 1 address or as many as you want), and hook it up to MetaMask like I showed so you can use it in DeFi. Hope that helps

From my understanding I do everything correctly, but when Metamask ask me to select an account, I can't find mine in any of the three paths. Any reason for that? Hey Philippe, you're very welcome! Sometimes the derivation paths don't align between MetaMask and Ledger Live. Usually when you created the Ledger wallet a while ago. Maybe try using the Ledger Live connection instead of WebHID and see if that works

WebHID is a direct connection to the Ledger device, rather than having to go thru Ledger Live as a middle man. Less moving parts basically
