    As an agnostic athiest with Christian family members my advice is do your homework be familiar with counter apologetics learn to think rationally with a good dose of skeptism. Have a basic familiarity with the Bible esp the good bits like incest, slavery both chattel and sexual and what a genocidal egotistical monster Yahweh is and then carry on with his only begotten son. I have found that you will be left alone in your godless state. An example is read the Gospel of St. John (which I have) then OK you read the God Delusion by Richard Dawkins - the answer I got was no I can't do that it's not Christian, these people want to talk but they do NOT want to listern, the ones I have met are scared of reality popping the bubble of self delusion with their invisible friend is to be avoided at all costs.

      Thank you, Anthony, for sharing your thoughts here. Since you want to discuss extra Biblical literature, I would encourage you to study the gods of the cultures surrounding the Middle East during the period of the Old Testament. What you will discover is that contrary to your understanding, Yahweh was the one God alone who disparaged slavery, incest, and the like. The surrounding religions celebrated and encouraged this behavior. But let’s take your argument one step further- if Yahweh is the origin of these cruel and horrific behaviors, how do you explain humanity propagating them while also claiming to be atheist or agnostic? It is humanity that commits these acts, not Yahweh. Do you claim to be entirely inculpable yourself of committing any grievous acts against any other human? If Yahweh is not actually real, then He certainly ought to be indemnified of any responsibility regarding the behavior of humanity…that which does not exist cannot be the cause of anything.

    Imagine what it's like being the only atheist in a hard core Christian family. It's worse.

      Please, tell me more. How did you arrive at atheism?

    • @socksumi
      @socksumi 4 года назад

      @@EricaWiggenhorn I never arrived at atheism. I've never believed in a god for as long as I can remember. I don't claim absolute certainty, only an inherent incredulity for a god to exist without cause or explanation. There is no way for a god to pre-exist in the first place. It's unfathomable to me. Seems much more likely it's just people inventing superman for what they don't understand.

      socksumi I see- I feel the same way about the universe and humanity- how can they just exist without cause or explanation? How could such beauty and intelligence come from a blob of cells randomly colliding with some force of energy? Sounds like we both are asking the same question yet applying it to different ends- The Creator or the created. 😄

    • @socksumi
      @socksumi 4 года назад +1

      @@EricaWiggenhorn Why not apply the same question to the god claim? How can a god exist without cause or explanation? How is it even possible for a god to exist? If so how? Where is your incredulity for god? Why do you stop when you get to god?
      I can however conceive of universe at it's most elemental, perhaps a formless existence. Where complexity, structure and form emerge slowly over eons of time by natural forces we don't understand. There is absolutely no reason to assume only chaos can emerge from natural forces. Incredibly intricate pattarns are indeed possible and virtually inevitable given basic mechanism and lot's of time.
      What I cannot conceive is for complex pattern and structure to exist (apriori). A form with claimed attributes as extraordinary and complex in function as a god cannot just exist without some way for it to exist. But theists seem to want to make god immune to all that. You don't get to do that and be convincing to me. As I said you are just inventing superman (god) as a panacea answer because you don't understand how the universe works. Except that it isn't really an answer because it answers nothing and explains nothing. You might as well say magic.
      I am honest enough to say I don't know for all manner of questions and mysteries. What I don't do is substitute one mystery with a bigger mystery and call that an answer.

      @@socksumi excellent question! I see us both asking the same question- where did we/the universe come from? Is there an explanation for our existence? Along with that an innate desire to identify the explanation- to explain the unexplained. Your belief is rooted in time (and PLEASE correct me if I am not understanding you correctly- obviously a face to face conversation would be much more preferable than this to be able to truly hear you and understand what you are saying :) !) In time, the explanation will come. I believe that to a degree, also. With the unfolding of time, there will be things we understand that we do not understand now. But, my friend, you must concede that even that answer requires some level of faith- does it not? You have still not answered where matter initially originated- what cause if any lay behind spontaneous combustion to set the matter to combine/reorganize/evolve. Or was it just always there? It doesn't actually provide an explanation- it merely kicks the can of explanation down the road- in time, I will understand it and the explanation will become clear. The reason why I have difficulty with this attempted explanation is that we have never witnessed any evidence of this theory throughout the record of human history. We call this explanation "science" but science involves observation/data/physical evidence to support our theory. This definition of science and the establishment of some sort of explanation for the universe's order and existence goes back over 2000 years to Aristotle and his Organon. However, in that span of 2 millenia, we have never once actually witnessed evolution. We have never seen energy produced from nothing. We have never witnessed a new species evolve from an old one. We see the universe and the earth moving into disarray rather than order- the destruction of ecosystems, habitats, extinction of species, withering away of the ozone layer, development of viruses and bacteria that destroy rather than secure future evolution. We see sprinkles of adaptation in a handful of species, but no evolution. And we see evidence of extinction far more frequently than adaptation. The earth appears to be winding down rather than continually evolving into new levels of growth and life. And if in the 2000 years of recorded history, we have never actually scientifically witnessed evolution, doesn't it take some stretch of faith to believe that we will witness it some day? Or that we will understand how it happened at one time, but ceased to happen for another unexplained reason? And if it is just one big cosmic accident, then why search for an explanation at all? We have to then live our lives with the belief that there is no purpose, no meaning, no reason at all for our existence and it is simply happenstance. We also have to embrace the reality that there is no moral code to the universe- no right or wrong, no higher good, each one chooses his own moral code and if molesting children seems good to him- who ought to tell him otherwise? Do we really believe that as humans that there are not certain things which are inherently good and evil? I do have incredulity at the existence of a God I cannot explain. Why He made us- why He LOVES us- the beauty in the world, the intelligence of the human mind, the intricacy of the human body, the sacrificial nature of man, the love of family. All of these things leave me in awe. In the end, to believe that they are all accidental takes more faith than to believe there is some sort of Intelligent Designer behind it all. In the end, we can agree to disagree, my friend- both of our positions require some level of faith- yours in time, mine in the Creator of time.
